Things had gone south rather quickly once Alois's double stabbed their host - though that begged the question of where was the Original? Finn hurried down from the balcony, scanning the maddened crowd for the familiar faces of Aleksy or Tate as he went - Tate was easy to find. She'd moved, against the flow of traffic, to stand over her mistress's body. Finn ran to her side, caught his hand in his. "Come on," he said, "We've gotta go." There was no question of her freedom now - masked, her master dead or very near to it. He pulled her away from the Spinel Lady, despite her initial protests, and dragged her through the crowd until he found the other Spektor twin. "A matching set," said Finn, grabbing Aleksy's wrist where it was covered with a bangle. "Let's go." Though that still left Alois - Finn hadn't seen him rush in with the other tithes. "Where were you held?" he asked Tate. "Before the ceremony? Was Alois there?" He gestured back towards the dais, to the soot stain that was all that was left of Vale. "His original." "The study," said Lady. "I'll show you." They made it to the study with no time to spare, the mad rush of people growing worse every second. "Alois!" called Finn, throwing the door open. "We're leaving!"

"Mother," Lady said, and her green-eyed gaze was far away even as Aleksy and Finn dragged her from Melany. "No, I can't go--" "Mother is dead," said Aleksy, and he slid into Russian: "Years ago. Cancer. We were six, Tatya, come on!" She came, and even led the way to the sapphire study. But once there, she collapsed bonelessly again, her hands covered in black blood and shaking as she clutched at her face. "My double's still out there," she said, "Lace. Lace is still--I'm not real anymore, I don't exist--" Aleksy looked at Finn. "Can you--just grab her, I can't--"

Alois managed a few stumbling steps outside of the window before he himself considered collapsing bonelessly onto the grass. The night wore too roughtly. The events that transpired left him no time to reflect. Others - Nosy Nips - forced him forward before he could collect himself. Now, he knew, he needed to find his father. He needed to explain, to confront, or to demand that the sacrificial sacrificial role take a different course. But even now, as he managed a few tentative steps toward a path outside, he wondered what he would say or what he could do. Would it matter? Was he certain for whom the bell should toll? Every second spent thinking it over proved deeply counterproductive.
A voice called, and he halted not far from the window. He knew it wasn’t of that room. Alois half-turned and caught sight of Finn, with Aleksy and Lady Red - but Lady Red broke upon the floor, herself drenched in blood. Is it already over? Was she picked, or…
Who was she close to? Thorne? Shiloh?
Alois clawed through the window, his gaze frozen on her. „Is it over zen? Who was it? Whose blood do you wear?“ He looked to Aleksy, to Finn - to anyone who would answer.

Finn drops his hold on Aleksy and goes after Tate, crouching to put an arm around her shoulders. "It's Melany's," he says to Alois. "Your double... your double stabbed the Spinel lady." At least he'd done something useful. He turned to Tat, nodding along with her babbling. "We'll find her," he assured her. "We'll deal with her. She was in a bad way before. It won't be hard." As long as he didn't actually frame it as killing lace it was easy to talk about. And if it was to save Tate... Finn thought he'd be able to snuff that light out when the time came. "Mr. Mercer couldn't kill Adoelle," he explained, looking up to Alois, "So he gave the knife to her, and she gave it to the man in the Pharaoh mask, who killed her - and then he gave the knife to your double, and he..." With the hand that wasn't around Tate's shoulder, he pantomimed stabbing himself in the heart. "Your double's dead," he added. "Burnt." He turned again, murmuring to Tate, "Come on, can you get up? We need to keep moving."

Aleksy reached down and hauled Alois into the room. "Just grab her!" Lady clutched her skirt. "She's--she's gone--I'm, there's nothing, please, she can't be dead..." Aleksy took a moment. Gentled. Crouched down in front of his sister, the long train of his robe curling around them. "It's alright," he said, sliding into Russian again. "Tatya, lisichya, come up. You're not alone. This isn't all there is. Come home." She came up, this time, when he tugged her to her feet. "A way out," said Aleksy in English, looking between Alois and Finn. "I'll keep her moving. You two guide us."

Dragged about like a possession, Alois stumbled back toward the others. He paused with hand flatted against the wall when Aleksy stooped to help his sister - twin? - and speak in a second tongue. Finn, in kind, lent him knowledge of the incidents following their sequestering. Adoelle was the chosen tithe from the sound of it, and for reasons unknown Vale took the knife to Melany. Alois cocked a brow in surprise, uncertain how best to feel for the moment. „Zat’s convenient. Very convenient.“ And afterward, his copy burned to death? „But who burnt him?“
There was little time for continued discussion, however; the group sounded increasingly paranoid and insistent upon escaping from the place. Alois imagined that if Melany fell as the head of the snake, then the body went into spasm. Were the other creatures reacting to the power vacuum left by her fall, then?
„If you need to leaf’, ah…“ Alois hesitated, pressed fingers to lips while he recalled Lady Red’s directions. „She said if you keep running, you’ll reach ze college grounds I sink? Zat way, I imagine,“ he finished, pointing straight out from the window. „I’m sure you’ll find ozzers on your way. A lot escaped after Temperance broke ze window.“
Finally, he looked to Finn again. „Where is Father? I need to find him.“

"The burning man," said Finn, taking a step away from Tate as her brother took over. He followed Alois's indication, looking towards the empty frame - and then back towards the other man in alarm as he stated his intention. "What?!" Finn asked. "No! You're coming with us. We came to find you. We're getting out of here - all of us. You, too." He looked over his shoulder at Aleksy. "Do you think it's safe to try to go back out through the foyer?" he asked "Or should we find a back way out?"

"Father is in the hall," said Lady. "He's safe. We... I need to go..." Aleksy gave Alois an incredulous look. He turned that look on Finn. "And we're walking," he announced, and he reached out to grab Alois by the collar as well. Being a ******** undead monster had its benefits: Aleksy was extremely strong. They go out the window, into the garden, and-- There's Lace, red-eyed and upset. "Mother lives," she said. "Mother lives, and you're all going back to her."

“Why would Father kill his own son?“ He shot back to Finn automatically. He paused then, second-guessing himself, and looked startled by the sound of his own question. Afterward he shook off the confusion and thought little of it.
„I don’t haf’ any-„ But his sentence found no end, as Aleksy’s iron grip held him captive. „Hej!“ He called as both hands clenched and worried at the smaller man’s arm. Where he found purchase, he encountered far more resistance than his trained muscles could overcome. Aleksy, he found, was frightfully strong. „******** sake! My family is here, not out in Ashdown! What haf’ I got back zere?“
The remainder of his complaints died on his tongue, an old clot of blood sucked away in a startling jolt. He paused in his objections when he heard the voice of a second Lady Red. Her double, the one whom she spoke about not long ago.
You’re shitting me, he mouthed to himself.
„Wherever you want to go, she will pursue you. Melany does not keep halfhearted watchdogs. I found zat out ze hard way.“

Finn Derouen | 25/25 | Ready for round 2Finn eyed Alois uncertainly. If he hadn't just seen his double's true form before it was immolated, he would have suspected a switch had been made. Even so, he didn't feel confident telling Alois what he did and didn't have back home. Lace had spent eight years steering Tate's life completely counter to any plan she'd ever made - what would Alois's double have gotten up to already, in just a few short weeks? "She can't follow us if she's dead," said Finn. He'd gotten her glamour down once before, and underneath she looked like she'd already died a long time ago. When he reminded himself of that, that she wasn't human, just some strange and magical construct - and an evil one at that - it was easier to steel himself for what he needed to do. "Back for more?" he called out to Lace, pushing his sleeves up to his elbows (they immediately began to slip back down). "Didn't I kick your a** well enough the first time?"

"There's nothing to pursue," said Lady. "I've been gone from the human world for almost a decade. Where will I go?" She tucked her arms tight around herself in a hug. "I'm going back to a world that's moved on without me. That's okay. I can do it." Aleksy let out a long, low hiss and scowled at the double of his sister. "I couldn't see you before," he said. "I do now." He looked over to Finn. "Let's do it, then," he said. "Yes, let's," agreed Lace. "Mother will need all of her children in order to heal."

alois scholz || 25/25 || grabbing that weapon “Oh, so you two won’t gripe about murder? Good, because I could really use an opportunity to beat someone to deas’ wis’ my fists,“ Alois hissed. After a breath, and a quick glance to Lady Red (for how dare she show him up with her readiness to return to the real world), he spoke of the transgressions against him. „Vale shot my dog. If I go back zere, I’ll haf’ to face it. Everywhere I go, I’ll sink about how my dog used to pee zere, or how he really liked ze girl zat worked ze counter every Wednesday at ze coffee shop, or how he used to take all ze coffee lids to chew on…“ He trailed off, stopping himself.
„Here, zere is no dog. No routine wis’ a dog. It’s not just zat zere’s no life for me left anymore, but zat zere’s so much more pain.“ And no support. No friends. No family. Here, at least I have Father and July. Sometimes September. Maybe Bennett, if he realizes it’s better to stick around.
He sighed, and brushed his nose with the back of his hand. „So if zis b***h needs to die, bring her in here and hold her down. I’ll grab a piece of window glass.“
Alois gave little pause to stop him before he started back toward the study, pausing only at the window to reach inside for a very potent weapon against skin and flesh. Withered or not, corpse or not, he could carve through it.

Finn | 25/25 | let's wreck this b***h. Arguing with Alois about his dog was a losing proposition and Finn knew it, so for now he bit his tongue and focused his attention on Lace. There'd be plenty of time to drag Alois kicking and screaming back to Ashdown after they took care of Tate's exceptionally persistent double. "You got it," he called to Alois, and, turning to Lace, shot her a narrow look. But he didn't say anything. She wasn't worth it. He just charged toward her, hoping she hadn't fully recovered from their earlier fight - maybe she'd be wobbly. He could always hope.

Lady said nothing, stared at Alois with transparently green eyes. Who knew what she was thinking: Maybe it's best I stay. Melany lived, if Lace was to be believed. Ezra could be kind, could even be sweet. Melany could, too. But she was a hell-b***h from beyond the stars, as far as Lady could tell, and... "I don't even have a name," she said, and Aleksy flinched beside her. Lace smiled, toothy and strange. Her canines were a great deal longer than they should be, sharp and pearlescent as the inner walls of a seashell. "Do you think she can even live without magic anymore?" She threw up a hand and Finn stopped in his tracks. "Do you think you can kill me? You think that's how this works? No, it's her or Mother--otherwise I'll just keep coming back."

alois scholz || 25/25 || doin’ it When he leaned through the window, each translucent dagger stared up at him with the unblinking eye of the moon. He conducted a quick appraisal, each shard looking as appealing as the last, before he chose one that would fit snugly in the palm of his hand with enough room for a makeshift handle. He found it only the matter of tearing the bottom hem out of his robe and wrapping it about the blunted edge of the glass for a safe and secure weapon. While he spent little time fashioning the matter, the creature form in the distance kept running her mouth.
Alois couldn’t tell whether she played a game of manipulation or stalled for time. He imagined the former - emotions were easy targets themselves - but that pressed him for action by default. If allowed to speak, whether they believed her or not, spirits would fall.
Let her focus on them. Alois cut briskly through the garden, rounding some of the old and bristling trees that promised to block his view in parts. When he spotted her once more, he aimed to plant the glass shard in her kidney. It was, he felt, a firm swing.
