It seemed that night after night it was just pick on this senshi, pick on that knight…sometimes…just sometimes…picking on people did get a little boring. She was a teacher after all…why couldn’t she teach some nice fresh Negaverse agent how to pick on other senshi. Hell. She hardly ever saw any Negaverse agents, and Cavansite almost was starting to wonder if she was the only one out here fighting night after night, when she felt someone nearby.

Good. At least someone knew how to do their job. And if they didn't, she could help with that.

Drawing in a breath, the Captain closed her eyes and teleported next to the agent she felt, grinning and only feeling…just a little dizzy from the drain of energy that it took.

“Well. Hello there. Are you having a nice night? It’s great to see someone actually working for a change. I was starting to think I was the only one left who actually was doing anything. I am Captain Cavansite, and who might you be?”

She was so damn cool. So damn cool and so damn slick.

He was going to be impressed she just knew it.

Tonight was going pretty well, all things considered. A few people had already generously donated, and there wasn't even much of a scuffle for any of them. If there was any part of the Lieutenant's job that Paracelsian had gotten good at, it was collecting energy. Sometimes, however, he wondered just what it took to get a promotion. His ambition tended to waver a bit; sometimes he wanted to hit Captain and see all the fun things the Negaverse really had in store, while other times he felt content with slipping under the radar and doing grunt work.

Maybe he had to fight a few more senshi before he'd be considered for promotion. He had somehow managed to avoid any major scuffles (he was sidelined for the majority of the big battle in the Rift). Maybe he needed to be a bit more proactive. Maybe-

His reverie was broken by a sudden presence next to him, followed by a Captain's introduction. Though he was initially startled, it was quite nice to meet a superior on the job. "Lieutenant Paracelsian," he replied, tipping his hat politely. "Good to meet you, Captain. I've managed to collect a decent haul of energy tonight. Diplomacy has gotten me further than I thought it would."

“Well now. That’s a bit of a mouthful of a name now isn’t it?” Cavansite laughed and let her eyes rake over the lieutenant. He looked like…a doctor of some kind. He even had rubber gloves, and a face mask…it wasn’t an attractive uniform, but she supposed that not everyone could be as lucky as she had been with her chaos given outfit. But, regardless, it was easy to tell which side he was on.

She nodded at his declaration that he had a good haul of energy. Good. He had a good work ethic. That was important. The Negaverse needed people who actually did the right things and got energy and starseeds…

Not that she didn’t get starseeds, but the amount she kept for herself…well.
She had to look good, right? How else was she supposed to be intimidating?
“That is very good Lieutenant. I’m quite pleased to hear that. So. What else have you been doing in your tenure with our great organization? Have you been with us long? Do you enjoy it?”

Maybe she wasn’t the right person to be asking these things…but it was sort of like how Cinnabar interacted with her, and Cinnabar was a great leader. Someone to really look up to.

"Mm, you think so? Maybe you just need to practice saying it," Paracelsian said in an even tone in response to the Captain calling his name a mouthful. There had to be worse mineral names out there. "If it's too much trouble, Para works just as well. Or Parry." Those names seemed a bit too "cute" for his tastes, but it occurred to him that a short nickname could save precious seconds in a pinch. Having those nicknames be silly-sounding would be an acceptable sacrifice.

The inquiry about what exactly he had been doing made him feel a bit nervous. Collecting energy was what he was supposed to do, wasn't it? If it turned out that he was missing some important part of Lieutenant duty, he was going to feel very silly. "Not much else other than energy collection, I'm afraid. But I do meet my quotas, so... that should count for something." A beat passed before he added, "I've been with the Negaverse for... not quite a year yet. A few months short of that, I think. And do I enjoy it? Well, I don't dislike it. But sometimes I have concerns about my role. I feel as though there's something I'm missing about this work. While slipping under the radar has its own perks, I feel like I should do something more, somehow." Perhaps he was being a little too frank, but he was willing to bet on getting guidance instead of a reprimand.

“Well if I end up calling you Parry, I’m afraid I’ll have to start referring to you as my little platypus.” Cavansite grinned and fell quiet again, listening to him and nodding. “Well, I must say, meeting your energy quota is a very good step in the right direction! But tell me, my little platypus, have you pulled a starseed yet? Have you had that thrill yet? If you have, oh I want to hear the story, because I’ll bet it was a good one, and if you haven’t…perhaps that’s what you’re missing out on.”

The captain stood a little straighter, her eyes sparkling with malicious delight. “I remember when I pulled my first starseed, I still have it here, in fact.”

She pushed tucked the hair behind her right ear and showed off the starseed that dangled from the earring. “It was only from a civilian, so it’s not that impressive…what’s more impressive was the amount of trauma I gave to a poor baby senshi, I thought he was going to start crying and uh. It was delicious.”

Cavansite gave a wistful sigh and did seem truly happy with what she had done. “You see, Paracelsian, the key to doing well in this organization…or what I consider the key to doing well, it’s worked for me at any rate—enjoying what you do. You have to enjoy the power that you have and realize that you can do so much with this power…more than anyone else can do who doesn’t have this power. You are as close to a god as you will ever become, my little platypus. Enjoy every moment of it.

Oh boy. Paracelsian didn't expect the Captain to latch onto the nickname like that. Ah, well, it wasn't that worth fussing over. "No, I'm afraid I haven't pulled any starseeds yet," he said, a hint of hesitation to his voice. Since Cavansite seemed so keen on hearing a story of a pulled starseed, it didn't feel good to disappoint her. When she went into her own story, even going so far as to show off a trophy, he was completely unsure of how to feel. Something about the pleasure she expressed in traumatizing one person and killing another felt uncomfortable, but he knew he had to swallow that feeling. It seemed that, at some point, he would have to pull a starseed if he wanted to be anything more than a grunt. But did he?

Paracelsian made a thoughtful noise as he turned over the Captain's words in his head. "I... maybe I need to get in touch with my power," he said. "I understand that, as a Lieutenant, there's not much power to have, but I guess I'm not really sure how to make the most of what I do have." Understanding what it meant to wear the title of Negaverse Lieutenant was certainly an important step, but it seemed like there was no clear direction.

Cavansite nodded at his words. “It’s all right. I didn’t pull my first one for a while either, don’t feel bad about it…just be sure when you do pull it, you’re ready.” She thought about the other starseed she had pulled and a strange, unwelcome feeling of guilt suddenly overtook her. Stupid cosmos knight. She deserved to die. Deserved it just because she was weak and trusting.

“Anyway, another great tip is just to always go with your gut instinct. You’ll learn your power, and when you grow stronger, you’ll know it even more. Teleporting is one of my favorite little tricks, it’s fun to be able to just pop up near someone and scare them, or to get away if you’re in a pinch.”

The captain put a hand on Paracelsian’s shoulder. “I’ll be here for you if you ever need any help or guidance. You can count on me, and I’ll make sure you become the best you can be.”

"Hmm. I do hope I'll be ready when the time comes. And teleporting does sound like something to look forward to." When Cavansite put her hand on his shoulder, Paracelsian sucked in a breath. "Thank you for offering your guidance, Captain. I..." He exhaled. "I hope I'm as ready to step things up as I should be." Looking off to the side, he added, "Perhaps we could start by scouting the area? I don't know what we'll find, but the further we go, the more likely something is to pop up."
