Ruven was trapped living in Odin’s small apartment but it’s not like he could use that elf for physical comfort. Things were… Complicated. The werewolf pulled the joint from between his lips and kicked the brick wall beside him. ”It’s fine. Just get me a beer. Whatever your favorite is.” Odin had never been much of a beer guy. Never much of a weed guy. He didn’t start using normal ways to get intoxicated until after prison. He liked drugs too much. It felt good shooting up or swallowing pills. No nasty tastes. No coughing. No harsh anything. The glass was placed in front of him and he quietly wrapped his fingers round the handle as he brought the drink to his lips.

                                                                              Bottoms up.

                                                                              Disgusting.

                                                                              Megane Yurika

                ████████ ██████ ███iVALLERIE HINTON
_______________________________l__________I'D DO ANYTHING TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING

Meticulous and forceful band-aid wrapping came with the frizzing of Valerie's hair as she tried to settle her emotions, a book tucked under her arm uncomfortably. She just couldn't deal with it. Why did her little brother have to say such things? But as she looked back on it, he always seemed to feel obligated to say crude things about her to her face as if it was supposed to do anything or make him feel any better. The electric mage didn't see how it worked that way, but she knew it set her off. It wasn't even possible to stay cooped up in that house trying to study after all the onslaught of mockery and insults without the possibility of busting light bulbs. So what would be Valerie's best solution to this--vodka shots. She saw it as one of her only solutions at this point.

Of course, she couldn't do it so close to home or it'd just had to her irritation. Luckily there was a nice little neighborhood not that far from home that she could easily walk to and she was already storming off in that direction, her shoes clicking against the concrete from the emotions rolling through her. If she wasn't so kind at heart, she would've electrocuted him by now.

Damn that soft heart. It's always getting in the way. Why can't I just not give a damn?

Of course that wasn't a possibility. It's like it was built into her system--no matter how many times she was beat down by anyone, she still stopped to care about them and their well-being over her own. It was a little sad and foolish but something that just couldn't be helped. The electric mage had come to accept that about herself. It was one of the few things she could accept since she really wanted to change most things that didn't seem to please others. It was like her whole being revolved around pleasing others rather than herself. She wanted to please her parents and make up for being such a burden, so she went to college. She wanted to please her roommate, so she offered to try the drugs with her. Vallerie could make a list of people she'd done stupid things for to try and please.

With all the thoughts buzzing around in her mind and clouding over in emotion, it's a relief she'd been to this pub before and knew where she was going or the klutz would've gotten lost. Of course, she figured her presence was probably something the usual bartender expected since she was slowly turning into a regular since she'd gotten back to her mom's home from college, taking a break in-between degree goals. So pushing through the door, she gave him a wave like usual even if her expression was a bit more gloomy than the gesture. Her hair was thankfully already done-up in a purposefully messy manner because the static running through her only added to the mess just a little except for the fact that the braided part was pretty good at keeping it from floating away.

Slipping her thumbs into her belt loops, Val made her way over to the counter and up onto a stool before huffing and slumping against the counter. The bartender she'd waved to stepped over to her. "Well well, it's the return of the electric mage. What can I getcha?" She lifted her head a little and rolled her eyes playfully. "You make it sound like it's eventful. Might as well add me to a list of regulars or something." She huffed again, pressing her cheek against her palm and finishing by ordering. "You know me, we're going with the usual. I don't play around with agitation, and it's either this or something at home is breaking." She narrowed her eyes with the statement as the bartender gave a leery chuckle and nodded, working on a few vodka shots. She knew she didn't have to explain this to him because he'd seen this before and already knew what she wanted. So while he made her shots, she took a minute to look around the pub.

As he finished, he set up about three shots, not wanting to start her off with too many so early which only received a grimace and slight glare from the electric mage, but she accepted them reluctantly. "You better not be holdin' out on me now. That's just not fair." She practically pouted with a twinge of aggravation as she took the first one and tossed it back, slamming the glass against the counter and twirling it with her band-aid coated fingers--her expression turning a bit idle and blank as she waited for it to sink it before starting on her next one. These had to last her a bit, that was the goal.

"You make it sound like it's eventful." Odin's head turned to catch an almost frail looking thing. Her voice was almost familiar. Her exposed stomach would've been Odin's point of attention if he hadn't noticed the faces on her knees. Pandas. His gaze lifted towards the girl's face trying to work out if it was someone he'd known after all these years or not. It would've been embarrassing to ask who she was if she turned out to be someone different. But... The bartender had said electric mage. What were the chances? Low. He’d imagined most people like her would’ve left the city a long time ago. Found a husband in some little suburb where she’d make a good housewife as she finished up school and got a side-job. One of those stereotypical lives. She would have been a good fit for it.

Odin thought about his ex-girlfriend a few times in prison. In fact, being around such complex sexual situations was what made him think about her, if he were to be exact. Watching men offer themselves up for drugs or acceptance within a group brought Odin back to that night in high school he kept pushing his girlfriend into threesomes or to drink more than she wanted, often leading to terrible nights where she couldn’t do much but puke and pass out. He just never stopped pushing the girl past her limits. She was so timid. So submissive when Odin got pushy. Was it because the girl was so scared those nights that Odin would hurt her, or was she just worried he’d discard her like a useless tissue if she didn’t listen to him? Odin never had to admit he was terrible until he spent time in prison… Until he hurt all those people… Until he got hurt.

There was some piece of Odin that was lost when he’d been on the receiving end of that s**t. Some piece that could empathize with the most pathetic of people. Prison didn’t make Odin stronger or tougher. It just made him scared.

”Long day?” Odin asked standing up, reaching for his drink as he pulled himself to a seat next to the girl. He stared towards her rather large eyes as he tried to read her like an open book. It had been years since he’d seen her. He didn’t know what color shade her hair was. He didn’t even know what color eyes she had. But this girl was familiar. So Odin took his chances. ”Been a while, eh?” He asked softly as the smallest hint of a smile spread along his lips. It wasn’t something he did often, if at all. But it was what normal people did. And odin wanted so badly to be normal even if it was just for five short minutes before he scared the girl off.

Which he knew he would the second she got asking about him and heard he’d been in prison. That he was broke. That he worked as a cashier and busboy humiliating himself on a daily basis. ”How you been?” The werewolf asked Vallerie as he waited to hear all about how she’d moved out of the city and had some nice guy locked down. As he waited to hear that she was just visiting and would go back to her normal life soon.

                                                                              Megane Yurika

Thoughts almost lost in the bottom of an empty shot glass when a familiar voice seemed to float over her like nostalgic warm butter, pulling her from her thoughts with a tug from her chest as her head shot up to try and see the face that this voice belonged to.

Her eyes widened when the face and the...everything...matched the voice exactly as she had suspected. Chest constricting as hazel eyes widened in surprise, zapping herself in the surprise as the sudden urge to just test of those strong arms would embrace her like they used to. Oh how she knew--or should've known--that she was a fool for loving him like she did with all that he put her through, but she only ever did that just to keep him. Silence controlled Vallerie for a short time before she found her voice. "Uh--yeah, I think long day would be an understatement. It's hard to get adjusted to being back home when you easily fall back into sibling ridicule." Her eyes shifted over to the shots waiting for her before sheepishly going back to him. "I...I'm not dreaming, right? You're, like, really here?" She reached out to poke at his abdomen as if needing tangible proof. "You feel real...and yeah it-it has been a while. I..uh..didn't prepare myself for this." She poked her index fingers together and hung her head as if disappointed in herself.

Deep breath. In...out..it just can't be. No way. Odin--that Odin...my Odin.

"I'm taking a break in-between degrees from college. It's kinda left me with little-to-no social life. The dorm roommate I had and rarely wanted to talk to me oddly suggested I take one. She said my social skills sucked a** and that I should explore more. So here I am." She tried to explain how she'd been, but she was pretty sure that didn't exactly explain much. How could she tell him that she'd been slamming back vodka to ease her stress and cramming with a stronger, alchemized substitute of Adderall, or that she was experimenting with other weird drugs just to get along with her roommate? What kind of an impression would that make on her ex-boyfriend? Vallerie's chest fluttered with the idea that it might truly be him...him. She had to take the chance.

"So...uh...how has the ever-persuasive Odin been?" The electric mage gave him a sheepish but genuine smile while idly fiddling with the band-aids on her fingers for comfort. Her heart raced to the point she was sure it might just leap out and leave her. Why wouldn't it? However, the pressure left her a bit too nervous and caused her the urge she couldn't resist. She leaned over to the counter and grabbed her second shot glass, throwing it back and slamming the glass on the counter before shaking her head lightly and quickly, only to turn her attention back to the object of her complete interest. What she'd been doing--all the cramming, college work, guinea pig drug testing, and the stupid s**t she'd been up to felt minuscule compared to this influential...amazing...presence sitting beside her. In fact, the ridicule she'd endured not an hour before and the whole world around her were even nominal compared to his attention. Why was that? It'd been long enough. Why did he still manage to make her heart leap?

”Dreaming?” Asked the werewolf, ”Nah. Can pinch you if you need to be checked.” He stated very calmly. His eyes slowly followed the girl’s finger as she pressed against his abs, which honestly, prison did miracles for. Odin was in the best shape he’d been in throughout his entire life because of that place. It was the only good thing that came out of it all. He had nothing better to do than workout for majority of each day. It didn’t help that his crippling paranoia made it difficult to do anything but look like a terrifying brute that nobody was to mess ********. Julian was still in there. Mallory. Leon. One of them were probably dead by now after the position Odin had left them in. After everything the four of them had gone through it was difficult to think about. The gang of ghouls were pissed at him. The alchemists were pissed at him. The junkies were pissed at him. He didn’t make any friends inside. Just enemies. Odin couldn’t think about it or he’d get physically sick to his stomach. The position he left those three in without notice.

”I’m taking a break in-between degrees from college” The girl began to explain, no, tried to explain. A break from school because her roommate who never spoke suggested it. Odin rolled his eyes towards the ceiling. Tch — left his lips softly.

”Ya shouldn’t do something just ‘cause someone who hates you says so. Can’t imagine having a roommate that can’t stomach speaking with me.” That’s what Julian thought of Odin. He never spoke thinking Odin hated his voice. That he couldn’t stand it. The ink mage would only ever write out sentences with his magical abilities, leaving Odin alone most hours of the day. Conversations were always one-sided and left Odin feeling as though he were speaking to a rock. He hated it. If Val had to deal with that on a daily basis he felt sorry for the girl. ”So what? You were focusing on school too much and weren’t making any friends?” The male tilted his head to the side without meaning to as he tried to decide just what he was going to say to the girl. He couldn’t let Val know how big a ******** up he was.

”I’ve been having a pretty shitty social life too.” Mainly because Odin wasn’t supposed to speak to any of his friends from before prison. The drug addicts were ’triggers’ for him, his therapist claimed. That they’d try to have him using again. ”Been learning all about my pops’s business. I have to take all that s**t over within the next ten years after all. He’s gonna need to retire since he’s getting old as s**t.” Lies. Everything Odin said was a lie. His father didn’t trust Odin with a goddamn housekey since he thought the male would rob them blind. He’d never trust his business in Odin’s palm. ”You’re really having social problems, hm?” He glanced at his drink as he wrapped his hands round it. ”Could try to help you work on that. I thought you’d be a pro after all those parties I used to drag you to. What happened?” He really did picture the girl becoming more outgoing as she grew older.

                                                                              Megane Yurika

The feeling of his strong abdomen under her finger still resonated like an imprint or wearing a ring for too long. It caused her face to flush a little, glancing at the area on his torso that she'd prodded while pictures swirled in the back of her mind--images of what that might look like. Oh. No no no, Vallerie, focus. This wasn't an easy feat. She'd gone so long without actually genuine or wanted physical contact. It either came in the form of rude shoving or just detached taps on the shoulder to catch her distracted attention for a few moments. The mage was simply horrible at keeping up with what was going on around her when she was immersed in studies or something else...probably an effect of the alchemized pills. At least they helped her do what she needed to do--even if they always had that down-fall of making her feel like s**t.

It crossed her mind for a split second or so as to just where that alchemist might be and--well how much did she have left. Oh...s**t, he went home for vacation, and I'm not even sure how many there are. I'll...think of something later. She tried to reassure herself as she refocused on the conversation and the man in front of her, the one she'd remembered as a handsome high school guy--the kind that sent her mind reeling to the point she didn't even think that maybe for a second his requests had been a bit much and that she should've been treated better. It was all for his sake...for him...everything. He somehow deserved that in her eyes, even if anyone she'd talked to about him to try and dote on him had said otherwise. They were all wrong.

As she'd explained her reasoning for being back in town, his reaction was a bit surprising. Vallerie wasn't sure at first why it surprised her, but it did. ”Ya shouldn’t do something just ‘cause someone who hates you says so. Can’t imagine having a roommate that can’t stomach speaking with me.” Odin's response left her a bit awestruck. It sounded like a type of empathy--which she hadn't entirely expected from him, but it was more than welcome. Even more so...he was kinda right. Sure, she could really use a break considering she did nothing but read and only ever bonded with that specific roommate over drugs, but--why was she taking advice from that damned nymph? Furrowing her brows and pursing her lips into a flat line, she leaned against the bar counter and made a simple hand gesture towards the bartender, calling him to bring her more shot glasses. Snagging one up, she tossed it down and let the glass hit the counter while listening to him talk more.

The electric mage was sure she could listen to him talk all day. His voice had just gotten more attractive with age...everything about him had. Her head spun just a tiny bit as he asked her a few more questions. Of course, the first set were more rhetorical than anything else. So she didn't have to worry about answering those and simply blinked a few times while spinning another shot glass and letting him speak.

Wait...Odin's been having a shitty social life? The hot party animal? Naah...that can't be. She tried to register the image of him being more responsible and helping take over a respectable business, but it was almost hard to imagine. Plus her head was a bit fuzzy--which didn't exactly help matters. However when he'd finished explaining his whole deal, Odin had actually offered to help the mage work on her social issues. HIM...Odin...help her...she couldn't quite fathom it, but it was something she'd jump on in an instant if it meant she'd get to be closer to him.

The alcohol was hitting her head a little bit as she went to respond, just a little hint of slurring hesitance in her voice that wouldn't be noticed by most except a more trained set of ears. "Well..I didn't wanna be that same ol' ******** up that broke everything...in the house...and got laughed at by my stupid brother...ssoo I got too involved in college work...and not enough in people. I...I would so take that help. Mhm mhm." As she responded, she had both head gestures and was waving one of the empty glasses like it would help emphasize her point before putting that glass down and awkwardly reaching for another glass to down. That would make...five? She tried to think, looking over the empty glasses, but her thoughts were so preoccupied that she couldn't focus on counting the empty glasses too. So she took to staring at the methodically with slightly squinted eyes.

Vallerie had these huge eyes that were hard to look away from. Always seemed amazed or obsessed. Something. He knew the girl was a bit socially awkward, but the more people Odin met, the more he was finding most people seemed to be off socially. In prison people never picked up social cues. They only responded to physical violence. Nobody cared if another person was emotionally hurting. Nobody cared if another person was in physical pain. Nobody cared about you unless they had their mind set on beating you down for someone. There was no such thing as sympathy or empathy. They treated you the same unless you snapped towards them and threatened to tear their throat out. Had Odin become the same?

                                                                              No. Yes.

He had become too calloused and cold to care about most people since leaving that world. But prior he wasn’t much better either, was he? Stealing from friends and family. Taking all he could. Never keeping in contact with anyone that cared about him. Caring about people in prison was weakness and Odin went in already damn well conditioned for that environment. If you had a cellmate who hated you they could see who sent you letters and find people on the outside to hurt them if you didn’t listen to them. If you made friends in prison they’d be the first people to get hurt if you angered someone. The buddy system was important. Making sure someone was always there to watch you was important. Odin still cared about things. Like Ian. There was one person he was doing everything he could for, which in the grand scheme of things wasn’t much.

Vallerie used to be a master piece to Odin. His friend spoke about how he fantasized about sleeping with Vallerie so naturally, the hormonal filled werewolf quickly decided to try and take her for himself. It worked and the friendship Odin once had with the mage that was trying to get the guts to ask the girl out quickly disintegrated into one fight after the next. Eventually the mage couldn’t stomach seeing Odin in the same room as him. Meanwhile, Odin was having a ball using Vallerie as his new accessory. The girl was dragged around like his newest chic clothing. Odin always had the best. Vallerie became one of those girls people found themselves jealous of even though she didn’t quite fit the usual mold.

I...I would so take that help. Mhm mhm."

Odin smiled as he gave the girl a nod of approval as he took out his cellphone and went through it to open up the NEW CONTACT screen. The werewolf placed it on the bar top in front of the girl. ”Go ahead, add your number.” Then of course, Odin had to add in ”I’ll take you on a date for old time sakes.” He glanced at the only clock in the room and glanced back at the bar’s surface. Tonight he wanted to get drunk. He wanted to do drugs. He wanted to get ******** up. He didn’t think he had it in himself to entertain Vallerie and act… Normal. He wanted to go home, get sloppy drunk, and trash his apartment.

Having something to look forwards to would help anyways, wouldn’t it? Odin would be able to pretend to be normal for a night. Hell, it would bring Odin back to a time before his drug problems were out of hand and he ******** up his life. ******** knows the werewolf could use it. After the girl put his number into Odin’s latest cellphone, the werewolf took it back and placed it into his pocket. ”I can’t stay here for too long, I need to head back and get some work going. I’ll give you a ring later in the week. Save your Saturday next weekend. I’ll bring you somewhere nice.” He promised the girl as he started counting out the money he needed to pay the few drinks he’d had. He tossed the cash down and quietly mused over the thought of how he’d need to save money for a week. That, or ask Ian for money. Odin was a ******** 28-year-old man that hardly had enough money to pay for a shitty apartment.

                                                                              He was a ******** joke.

                                                                              End Thread.

                                                                              Megane Yurika
