The room to which they withdraw is smaller than the other places within the manor. It has a desk, a richly-colored rug, and seven chairs. Melany takes a seat behind the desk, looks out the window at the moons perfectly silhouetted within it. "The hour approaches," she says, quite genially, as the five inhuman members of the council array themselves throughout the room. (Ezra stands behind a chair rather than sitting in it.) There is a seat left open for Algernon. "Let us review the personages of the tithes," she says, and then she lists them off: Alexander Thorne, tithe of the Spinel Lady, a male in good health and in his prime, well-beloved and strong; his blood would strengthen the cage for many years. Shiloh Beaumont, tithe of the Spinel Lady, a pubescent male in good health, well-beloved and strong; his blood would bring an energy to the cage, turn it more difficult to break. Alois Scholz, tithe of the Burning Man, a male in good health, stubborn and clever; his blood would introduce a subtlety to the cage, hide it from those who would destroy it. Bennett Vaughn, known also as Rabbit, tithe of the Burning Man, a male in good health if underweight, mild and easily dismissed; his blood would slow the inevitable decay of the cage. Huxtable Keighley, tithe of Adoelle Nashua, a male in good health and the prime of his years, well-beloved and strong; his blood would strengthen the cage for many years to come. There were other names: Tatiana Spektora, July Dewitt, September Harper. None of them were taken from Ashdown, but they were human as well, eligible to be tithed. "And then those who wear no mask, despite warnings: Juniper Wilcox, Adoelle Nashua, and Temperance Clark. This is our pool of tithes, my friends." Melany rises and pours two fingers of a violently red liquor into a glass, one for each of the council. "Who shall we name? I begin with our human compatriot." iloveyouDIE You will be rolling a 1d20 against each member of the council in succession! If you roll higher than they do, you convince them to change their vote. If you don't, their vote remains the same. You can start whenever you're ready!

Alg’s gut twinged with anxiety as he was taken from the main room, taken from Jeremiah’s grounding influence, and the surrounding communal feeling of the human group. He followed into the council chamber and was more than a little intimidated by his company. Melany was imposing behind her desk. He assumed it was a seat reserved for the head of the court and the meaning of that, with recent revelations, gave him a low simmer of anger that kept him a bit more present and less swept away by his nerves.
Alg looked at the red liquid in the glass and while something strong would have been nice right about now, this seemed like one of those moments someone may be poisoned, drugged, or otherwise awaken later as the sacrifice themselves. He also wasn’t keen on drinking anything poured by the Spinel Lady.
There were sour twinges as she listed the tithes off like cattle, like merchandise at auction only for their superficial merits. What would his listing have said? Jeremiah? Zac? What would their sacrifices have done to the cage? Were humans simply worth what they could do for the cause? It was unsettling, disgusting to think of, everything from books that had the hero rushing in to 'STOP THE RITUAL!' but here he was... carrying out a selection that they'd all very unflinchingly agreed upon.
Alg would try his best to remember the names of the other tithes, the ones he didn’t know, in a vain hope that it may meaning something when they got back to Ashdown. His eyes drifted to Adoelle as she was mentioned, then without being able to help it, to Noeh.
Of course it was just in time for him to be called on and Algie straightened in his chair. His instinct again to straighten his glasses brought only his fingers brushing the sides of the mask. He wasn’t sure if pleasantries were prudent but it seemed to be the time for getting to the point.
The time was now, the time he could throw caution to the wind and nominate someone else, be selfish and call for someone masked- Melany or Sunny. Maybe be ballsy enough to convince the court that no one should die... Perhaps he could bribe them-
But the group had chosen him to make a decision for what they thought was the greater, longer good. The bigger picture. Alg, in one way, had been an excellent selection of representative. The Professor would be sure to adhere to the group's choice and if breaking the cage brought any fear to the Spinel Lady, he hoped their decision would contribute to it.

“Adoelle,” Alg stiffened and straightened and addressed Melany after she addressed him, “There's nothing more appropriate than a willing tithe. I’ve learned a lot about the strength of will. I’m sure there is power in something volunteered freely.” Why would they pick those who were held against their will, when someone had stepped up and volunteered? They were here because they were human, and what was more important than free will?

The Eldritch Gentleman's mask moves slightly, as though he's raising an eyebrow behind his mask. Then, he echoes Algernon's sentiment: "M͝y҉ vo̶t̸e's҉ fơr Ad̢o̢el͜le às҉ ͜w͡el͟l̶," he says, and nods to the girl in white. "Si̧n̶ce ́she̵ w̸ąś ͞s̢o kįn̛d ͝a̧s to͠ vo̶lunte̢eŗ as҉ ̨t̵r҉ibu̸te. Adoelle smiles at both men. Both assertions do nothing to sway Melany. "I forgive you for your lack of knowledge of blood craft," she says to Algernon. "An unwilling sacrifice is preferable for work such as this. The desire to live, the resistance..." She pauses, savoring the words. Savoring the fight. "Not only does it improve the show, it improves the strength of the cage." She sips the bloody red liquid in her glass, toasts the Eldritch Gentleman with a mocking little smile. "My vote remains for Noeh, my maidservant."

Alg's jaw tightened at her response and her tithe choice. But it seemed that Adoelle's resistant will could help them if she was chosen. And Noeh- Mina. He didn't want to lose her so soon. There was more to find out and he only hoped he could connect with the young woman in some way. The Gentleman's agreement was both reassuring and unsettling considering what Rylan had told him in the other room. That meant there were three for Adoelle, if you counted the young woman herself. "How about you, sir?" Alg turned to the Sinister Survivor.

The Sinister Survivor frowns. The long nose of his mask drifts towards the Eldritch Gentleman and his frown becomes even more impressive. "Oh, if I must," he says. The Sorrowful One folds her hands in her lap and her head tilts down as she wrings her work-callused hands. Ezra says, "I choose you, Lady Melany. By the Lord's Perogative, you are obliged to remove your mask and submit to the tithe if the council so wills it."

"Wouldn't that be something..." Alg's mouth twitched a bit. He shouldn't have enjoyed seeing her put up, though if the will of the council ruled all it meant that the entire party spent worrying about who was masked, was near pointless. None of the humans who had been taken were offered up and remaining masked left no protection. He couldn't actually see a downside in losing the vote if Melany was instead chosen. Everyone seemed to disliked her. "Noeh?" She had been presented by that name and he would adhere to it for the propriety of the council.

The Sorrowful One's head dips lower, if possible, even as Melany's gaze grows stormy behind her lace mask. Her head sways, her hands in her lap twist, and she holds out a hand for Melany's list. Being given it, she writes in her loopy hand, I follow the lead of my Lady in all things.

Alg frowned to see Noeh defer to Melany's judgement. Clearly the taking of the court, the possession of it, and what she did to her 'servants' was far more thorough than he knew. Yet she seemed to remember herself, which was more than he could say for the others. There was a strong temptation to throw in with the others, to flop and choose Melany, but every way he thought about it was nothing more than satisfaction on his own part and some power play by the Burning Man from any other angle. Melany was powerful and would be a boost to the cage, if she was even truly a person at all. Hadn't Noeh told him her own blood would be rejected? He didn't even want to get to that point. "You've changed your mind once. Are you sure this is what's best?" He had the Survivor on his side, Alg now glanced to the Eldritch Gentleman again for more formal inquiry.

He really couldn't argue and if the worst outcome was that Melany was the tithe, again there would be satisfaction there for more than a few people. "Adoelle, do you still wish to volunteer?" Alg turned to her. "Melany was our second choice, but I'd still like to comply with your wishes." shibrogaxne you said she wouldn't change her mind about herself but prob should confirm

Adoelle tugs at a lock of her own hair. "I..." She stumbles over the word. "I do. I mean, I hardly want to die, but I..." She looks askance at the Eldritch Gentleman and the Sinister Survivor. There wasn't a lot of reassurance in her now slightly shaky decision making. Alg frowned slightly but she was, it seemed, sticking to her guns. He certainly wouldn't feel good about it, but he wouldn't feel good about anyone dying. "Alright," The professor nodded and spoke quietly now, "Which leaves my last formal plea to Ezra-" Could the Burning Man make a different choice? "I feel like your decision is based on personal vendetta and, I can't say I'm truly against your choice-" Melany was given a glance. "But there are grander things on the table." shibrogane last one i guess *sweats* burning bro
