Tonight was supposed to be easy.

Rory was supposed to go to the soup kitchen, finish her shift, and then she was supposed to go home, get ready for bed, and go to sleep. That was not what happened. Instead she got about halfway home before she got attacked by some freakish lizard thing.

The whole thing was very reminiscent of the night she met Aurostibite, except this time Rory had more than just the bad slung across her chest and her fists. This time she had Hydra.

Crowded back against a wall, near a dumpster in an alleyway, and certain that there wasn't anyone close enough to see her face in the darkening night, Rory found her henshi pen and let the chaos flood her system and leave Sailor Hydra in her place. The teen had never tried summoning her waves while she was on the ground but was willing to give it a shot when the youma skittered backward, scaly ears pressing back against it's skull as it appeared to regard her ruefully.

Curiously, the teal hair girl climbed to her feet and pressed a darkly gloved hand against the wall as she observed it. After a moment of consideration she stepped towards it, hand reaching, only to have it hiss at her. The lizard with ears had two sets of jaggedly cut teeth filling it's mouth and beady, yellow eyes that she thought might be glaring at her.

"Okay, so you probably aren't going to attack me now but you don't like me?" She huffed at the creature, arms folding across her chest almost indignantly. "Rude. Well get going if you're done harassing me then." It hissed in response, long tongue slipping out it's mouth.

He knew his research was dangerous, and frankly he wasn’t entirely sure what he hoped to accomplish aside from the fact that he wanted to learn more about the creatures that were controlled by the Negaverse and turned into dust when killed. After learning that it was possible to make senshi and probably knights turn into these creatures, Oberon couldn’t help but want to learn more.

Youma were difficult to track while he wasn’t powered up, but they tended to be lured towards his energy once he was powered up, so it was a game of protecting himself and getting close enough to observe. Typically he had someone with him, but since no one was really available, he was on his own.

Currently, he was trying to follow a reptilian youma, Class C or D he scribbled in his notebook, slinging his bag over his shoulder as it slinked down an alley.

Peter had every intention of keeping his distance, but heard the voice of a girl, which surprised him, and he immediately shoved his notebook and pencil into his back, and dug out his henshin pen to power up.

Probably a mistake, because he immediately found out that the girl in question was probably part of the negaverse, because how that he was powered up, he could easily feel her aura, and she could most definitely feel his.

Still, he couldn’t help but be curious and poked his head cautiously around the corner.

“Is that your youma?” he chirped, his eyes bright with the possibility of seeing one in action. “I’m not going to hurt it! I just want to study it. For science!”

The youma hissed at her again and she kicked her leg at it halfheartedly. The heel of her boot didn't even come close to it's face, but it snapped it's jaws at her anyway. Hydra had scooted back a little, pressed herself against the wall before trying to clamber to her feet before the youma decided that, hey, maybe it still wanted to attack her.

She'd barely gotten to her feet, hands pressed against the brick of the building wall behind her, when she felt something tingling on the edges of her sense and - a boy's face popped up from around the corner.

Blinking, her brows knitted together and she frowned. "No. It's not - " she shook her head, watching as the reptile youma turned in a circle and began hissing at the newcomer. In truth, Hydra didn't know if she could have a personal youma. Her general had one certainly but -

This one didn't like her, maybe they didn't like what she was.

"Wait. Why do you want to study it?" That seemed weird, wasn't this boy someone from the other side? "I don't think it likes either of us, so I recommend that you stay away." The youma had however, scooted back towards her slightly like she would do anything to protect it.

It'd tried to eat her and hissed at her, she wanted nothing to do with it.

”Ah, look at it!” he chirped almost excitedly, cautiously taking a step into the alley to try and get a better look. “Did you know that a lot of reptiles have a filter lens over their eyes that absorbs ultraviolet light and protects their eyes? And this guy’s eyes are yellow, uh… I don’t have my book with me, but I think a type of alligator lizard has yellow eyes, too. I wonder if they’re related,” he said, mostly to himself and making a mental note to jot that down later.

As for why he wanted to study it, Oberon simply stared at the girl like she had an extra head, because why wouldn’t he want to study them?

“Because they’re awesome. I mean, we live in a world of monsters, right? The more we learn about them, the more we can understand them and what their needs are,” he said with a small shrug, lifting his hands to cross thoughtfully over his chest as he watched the youma back up towards the corrupted senshi.

“I’m Oberon, senshi of adventure. You’re a senshi that was corrupted into the Negaverse, yeah? I can’t imagine that was easy. You’re lucky you weren’t turned into a youma, yourself.” She didn't look much older than he was, and maybe was younger, who knew. But it made him wonder just what the Negaverse did to either convince her to join or maybe forced her into it.

That was a thought that had him shivering uncomfortably.

Laughter bubbled out of Hydra's mouth when the boy spoke enthusiastically and stepped into the alley with her and the youma. The way he prattled on was almost endearing and if she wasn't supposed to hate him because he was one of them she might have thought it was cute. "Do you spend a lot of time with your nose in a book?"

The grin that had been on her face slipped when he stared at her.

"You want to learn about the monsters." Her tone was more apathetic than she meant but she stepped towards him, legs spread enough that the reptile youma crouched under her, jaw snapping like it was waiting for an order. "Their needs seem pretty simple? They want to eat people."

But she didn't really know much about youma, maybe she'd have to bother her general for some information.

"My general wouldn't have let that happen," she said defiantly, her own arms crossing over her chest. "What do you know about the process anyway." The youma hissed again and she glared down at it. "Jeez, would you get lost already!" She snapped, only to be surprised when it hissed and skittered up the wall, onto the roof and away from the pair.

"Oh. Whoops."

“Internet, mostly,” he corrected her with a shrug, “But yeah, books when I need to get more research done.” He’d been spending more time at the library than usual these days, and not just for his school work. He wasn’t sure why she seemed so against trying to learn about youma. She seemed… he wasn’t sure. Not uninformed but maybe kept in the dark about some things.

“I know plenty about the process. I’ve seen it happen. Seen it almost happen. Chaotic energy is pushed into your body and you get more power, right?” he chirped, and then let out a disappointed “awww” when the youma scurried away and up the wall. He was tempted to chase after it, but this senshi might be good for his research as well.

“Do you know how it happens with us? Us senshi who come into our own power? It’s kind of lame, because from what I’ve seen and experienced, a guardian cat needs to be around in order for us to have our power unlocked. My friend was in trouble and I was the only one around who could help her, and I would have tried whether or not there was a cat around,” he explained, almost casually.

“I’ve been doing this for over five years. I’ve kind of gotten over the whole… fighting youma to kill them. Now I want to learn about them. And I think they're more intelligent than we give them credit for," he said, paused, and then added, "And they want to eat starseeds, not people.”

Oh, the internet, duh. Hydra was thankful for the darkness of the night that mostly hid the embarrassed tinge of her cheeks. "It's always good to double check sources," she quipped, because she liked books more than pouring over webpages.

But that probably had more to do with her lack of internet and a computer if she was anywhere but a library. Researching on the go, if it wasn't in a book, wasn't something she could do.

In the end, she squinted at him as he boasted about what he knew. "...Basically." She didn't know if it was smart to confirm or deny, or to really give any sort of information to the boy. Mostly because she didn't want to give away how new she was, even if it was obvious based on her aura and the way she carried herself.

"We didn't need a cat, for me." She said it without thinking, turquoise eyes blinking at him as she tilted her head, long strands of hair falling across her shoulder. "So, what you're saying is you're always reckless and 'brave'?" It was both dumb and impressive in her opinion and it feeling showed as she looked at him.

"They don't die." Not from what she knew about them anyway. "Starseeds and people are kinda the same don't you think? One can't exist without the other." She had, at least, seen the way the starseeds dulled when they were too far from a host. "Youma - they don't like me."

“Hardly,” Oberon admitted without hesitation. “I’m reckless, but I don’t think I’m that brave,” he said as he glanced around them, not really sure what he was looking for, but it was always good to know ones’ surroundings.

“I think I fall more in line with… curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back kind of thing,” he hummed, his eyes falling back onto the girl across the alley from him. “Besides, I’m not a Gryffindor,” he said, his lips quirking slightly in amusement at his own lame excuse for a joke, but soon shook his head to let her know he was just saying silly things. For all he knew, she had no idea what he was talking about.

“You’re close,” he said with a nod. “People can’t exist without starseeds, but starseeds will live after the body dies. Did you know that? I’m not sure about the exact science, but when starseeds are returned to this thing called the Space Cauldron, they have the chance of being reborn into a new body. If the starseed is eaten or destroyed, it breaks the reincarnation cycle forever,” he shared, although he didn’t dare admit that he and his friends had been the ones to clear out the huge cashe of starseeds in negaspace when they’d all attacked it.

“It’s probably because they know what you are. You’re a senshi, you were just corrupted. Your starseed is meant to be pure and youma can probably sense that. Or maybe it’s because senshi can turn into youma if they eat too many starseeds,” he said, although it sounded like he was mostly talking to himself, trying to figure out what theory made the most sense.

“At least they don’t outwardly attack you. I’d love to try and get closer to a youma, but they all want to take a bite of me.”

Despite herself, Hydra was grinning at the taller boy, hands fitting against her hip. "Well you sound like a Gryffindor, with that kind of description buuuut," she looked up in thought trying to think about the kind of house she would put Oberon in based on what little she knew. "But the haughty knowledge thing, and the research cause who researches outside of school and work, makes me feel like you might be better off in Ravenclaw."

But maybe she was wrong about that too.

Hydra was probably a Hufflepuff herself, but she wasn't going to say that.

"They don't live that long," she replied without thought, unwilling to be knowledge bested about things she felt like she needed to know. "I mean," she stopped, not wanting to continue on her train of thought because referring to the starseed + body relationship as parasitic sounded wrong. "They get dull, less effective." Though now that she knew about the shattering of lives permanently, maybe she wasn't very keen on the idea of people eating them for strength.

"My starseed is just fine, thank you very much," she snapped, grin gone and expression pressed into a scowl. "Well, maybe I can still get one of my own." Aurositbite had one, maybe she could too, even if they didn't like her much. "Why do you care so much about them?"

The fact that she knew the reference he made amused him, even if he didn’t outwardly show it. “Good guess, but no,” he admitted, leaving only two houses left. “Not according to that one website where you can do all the sorting and find your patronus and wand and all that, at least. But who knows how accurate all of that really is,” he said, more than happy to talk about something nerdy like that than fight.

“No, they don’t,” he said, shaking his head at the topic of starseeds leaving bodies. “From what I’ve learned, a human will fall into a coma, if they’re not killed instantly, and will eventually die. The time in which the body deteriorates varies. It’s the equivelant to your soul, after all.” Or at least that was how he understood it. There was no one who could really tell them all the answers. They kind of just had to go about making up their own theories.

The snap made him realize that he probably said something she considered offensive, even if it was true, and he held up his hands in defense and apology.

“Your starseed is probably fine, yeah. Just… you have chaos energy in it, right? At least it’s not cracked. Shitty stuff happens when your starseed is cracked,” he said with a grimace, but quickly shook his head. “And I happen to think learning about youma is more useful than just killing them. Like I said. It’s lucky you didn’t get turned into one. Senshi can become youma if you’re not careful. I want to find a way to help them. I have a feeling there’s more to them than just… chaotic energy filled monsters.”

Oberon told her know and her angry dissipated briefly for curiosity. "What house is it then?" She didn't know what she cared or wanted to know, she just did. She did, however, squint at him when he chose to talk about Pottermore without calling it Pottermore. "Why aren't you just saying the name of the website, it's not like I can't figure out what you're talking about."

She'd never used Pottermore herself, but she knew what it was. Computer time was limited, because she had to use the library, and she hardly had time to web surf things that weren't research related.

Hydra listened, interested in how he came about his findings but chose not to ask, yet. She also opted out of commenting further because she didn't have much to add or debate really. Maybe it was time she started to ask questions...

"It is just fine," she insisted, refusing to stand there and let people tell her that there were problems with it. She was fine. "They don't die," she reiterated, though it was probably unnecessary. "...how do you crack a starseed?" That seemed odd, weird and she wanted to know what he meant. "'Prolly not just senshi," she argued, albeit half heartedly.

"They're just gonna run away, or fight until they go poof," she felt like saying, using her hands to imitate a small explosion.

”Didn’t want to have to explain it if you didn’t know what it was,” Oberon said when she asked about not just saying the name of the website. “But you do seem to know what it is, so that solves that issue.” It wouldn’t have been the first time he’d said something that would label him a nerd and then had to explain it to people who didn’t really care to begin with, so he just didn’t bother.

“Slytherin,” he announced with a half grin. The sorting surprised him in a rather pleasant way, despite all the negative things that could be said about the house. He supposed he could be resourceful when necessary and ambitious when he wasn’t procrastinating. And what they said about Slytherins never leaving their own behind; it was definitely true for Oberon. He was loyal to a fault.

“My br-” he started but then immediately stopped, pressing his lips together as he realized it probably wouldn’t be best to reveal family ties to someone he didn’t even know. And someone who was in the Negaverse. “My buddy. Your girl Laurelite tried to corrupt him and failed. Months later his starseed got pulled and there was a crack. Even the General that pulled it felt bad and gave it back. Theory is that Laurel’s failed attempt caused it to crack. Kinda sucks. He’ll probably die eventually. Just not sure what will give out first; his body or his starseed.”

He probably seemed heartless, talking like that about someone who was supposed to be a buddy, or really his brother if she caught his slip. He just didn’t think there was any use in being weepy about it. Either they figure out a way to get his starseed fixed, or he was probably going to die. It was that simple.

“Any thoughts on how to fix a broken starseed?” he tried anyway, eyeing her curiously and wondering how much she knew about youma when they didn’t seem to like her that much.

“Maybe they’ll run. Maybe they’ll fight. Maybe I’ll just have to convince one to stay around long enough to research,” Oberon suggested as an alternative, obviously more for himself than for her. Even if it seemed hopeless or pointless, he still thought there was more to them than just mindless monsters.

"I would die of embarrassment if I didn't know what Pottermore was." She said point blank, turquoise brow arched when she crossed her arms over her chest again. "Off the bat, wouldn't peg you as that but..." Hydra looked to be considering what little she knew of him and shrugged. "Surprising but can't say it's wrong." And it wasn't like she would know anyway.

"Gotta prove that all snakes aren't bad huh?" Hydra tried to tease, the hints of a smile beginning to creep across her mouth. Her body language was still stiff and tense, but overall the corrupt seemed to be warming up to Oberon a little.

He seemed nice, enough.

She heard the slight slip but it was too fleeting for her to make much of, not when he was offering her so much fascinating information. "Queen," she corrected automatically. "She's my queen, not my buddy." As if she'd ever let herself be foolish enough to think that the figurehead of the negaverse would be her "buddy".

Chewing on her cheek she dared to ask, "has anyone looked at it since?" What if it had gotten worse? "If it does kill him, do you think the starseed will shatter?" She didn't voice the implied follow up question. Will that be it, permanently?

Hydra didn't know why she cared, but she did.

"To be able to form any sort of hypothesis," she tried to use fancy, sciencey words, "I'd have to see it. Dunno if it's ever been a thing worth fixing? Maybe he needs to go to that cauldron thingy."

“Snakes are awesome. It’s just the people who mess with them that give them a bad name,” he pointed out, pleased to see that she seemed to be at least somewhat amused by their conversation. He certainly didn’t expect to start talking about Hogwarts houses with a corrupted senshi that night.

“Queen?” he suddenly asked, staring at her as if she said something strange, something that wasn’t quite right. “You mean General-Queen?” Oberon tried to clarify, sure that he misunderstood what she was trying to say. Queen definitely wasn’t something he’d heard as a title for Laurels, but if things had changed since last year…

He pursed his lips as he thought about what may or may not be going on with his brother, and ended up shrugging.

“No one has looked at it, at least not from what I’ve been told. I certainly hope his starseed won’t shatter, but who really knows the damage that’s been done,” he said, lifting his hand to rub thoughtfully at his chin. “He’s already unable to use magic, can’t feel auras, which makes him a sitting duck on patrols, and he has a stinking compass for a weapon. Pathetic, right?” It certainly sounded pathetic, but Oberon grimaced at her suggestion of Valhalla going to the Cauldron.

“Yeah, I guess as a last option, but I’m pretty sure if you go to the Cauldron, you’ll need a century or so to be reborn, maybe longer. No one really knows, apparently. Not even the chick in charge of watching over the Cauldron.”

There was a long pause, and then as if he suddenly remembered something he said, “I’m Oberon. Of adventure.”

"Depending on the snake," she countered, feeling generally smug. "Some are cute too." She liked the little ones that were mostly harmless but sure fun to hold.

Teal eyes narrowed when he tried to correct her, grin fading so that she could purse her lips together. And, because she'd always wanted to say it, Hydra went; "Did I stutter?" She felt quite proud of herself and how serious it came across.

The conversation diverted and Hydra was, ultimately, grateful for it. "Well, maybe someone should." It seemed like the most logical step to her. They couldn't fix something they didn't know the extent of the damage. "Shame there's no magical superglue, could do wonders," she cracked a weak joke, smile tugging at the edges of her mouth again.

"Well, better he have a chance at another life than losing it completely." If what the senshi said was true anyway."And why would he be dumb enough to out on patrols if he's useless. That is pathetic." And stupid. And reckless. What was wrong with this friend of Oberon's?

A beat and she stuck a gloved hand out at him. "Hydra." She debated giving away her sphere and ultimately conceded. "Tsunamis."
