Another day, another stint in the rogue lands. Mezlijin had stayed home for quite some time, long enough to see a new Heiress properly introduced to his pride, but once again it was time for him to roam. He was glad that he didn't get homesick too often, otherwise his job as a scout would be very difficult to do. The small leopon enjoyed traveling to new places, seeing new sights, meeting new lions and cheetahs and leopards...ah, the world was such a wonderful place! The fluffy leopon made his way across a grassy stretch of land as the sun began to set, casting a beautiful glow over everything. The sky looked like it was on fire even though it was finally reaching a reasonable temperature, perfect for getting some distance between himself and the little hollowed out tree he had called home for the daytime. Mez had learned the ins and outs of traveling long ago and the best time to roam was from sundown to sun up.

Laka Subiani. A big name for a small lioness out in the world on her own.
Since leaving the homelands of the Ela'wadiyi she'd had a mixed reaction to being away from the somewhat suffocating atmosphere of home. The world was big, for one, and she wasn't sure how she'd ever get back to visit her family. Hopefully, when she decided to drop in on them, she'd find someone who could give her directions. So far, people seemed to be relatively helpful.
The biggest challenge, all in all, was the hunting. Laka missed her hunting party and the talent of her comrades. The Shadow Clan had always prided themselves on their superior hunting skills but...there was only so much strategy one could apply when out on their own and friends were not so easy to make out here. Most stopped to engage in small talk, discuss local terrain and dangers and then went on their way. Some, she had sensed, it was better to stay away from entirely, meaning circling wide to avoid crossing paths. Still, for all that it was new, the journey was going relatively well. She'd found a carcass to scavenge and caught a hare off guard the evening before.
And hunting was what she was doing when she came into view of the leopon, scratching at the holes left by rabbits and testing the scents to see which were fresh. Most, it seemed, were old and eventually she found the reason why. A cluster of burrows had been dug out. Any that had survived had likely moved home.
Ah well, better luck next time.

Mez sniffed the air as the familiar scent of lion was carried his way on a little breeze. Focusing his eyes in the direction of the wind, he was pleased to spot a grey lioness scuffling in the dirt. Friendly as always, he turned his paws in the direction of the other feline and padded off to say hello. As he approached he realized just how small she was. It was a delight, as he was quite small himself and was usually dwarfed by lions. She was just about his size! What a delight! And, as he drew even closer, he noticed the sky blue markings that adorned her body. She was stunning. "Hello there," he said cheerfully as he got within earshot, giving her a big grin. His appearance was rather terrifying, but his body language and tone of voice sang a completely different tune. "Looking for rabbits? I'm afraid this warren has been abandoned for quite some time. I know where another is not far from here, though, if you're looking for a meal."

The sound of the voice startled her, eyes widening as she looked up and located the source. A strange looking lion was just a short way across from her. He had the scruffiest mane she had ever seen, sticking up all over the place as if it had never been groomed and huge teeth jutting out from his jaw! Still, from his tone, he sounded friendly enough and his small stature was enough to put her at ease.
"Oh, thank you. I was looking for a meal, but it's not urgent. I like to keep on top of the hunting in case I hit upon bad times. Lone hunting is a new thing for me so I thought I'd take advantage whenever the opportunity arose."
She took a few steps towards him and smiled, "are you from around here, then? Rogue or pride? I do hope I've not wandered into a territory. I promise that wasn't my intention. My name is Laka Subiani, from the Ela'wadiyi. It's a pride up in the mountains."

"A bit of both, actually. I am from a pride, but it is some distance from here," Mez said as the lioness spoke. "I've been through this area plenty of times in the past, though. I suppose you could call it a second home. But there's no prides around here for quite some distance," he added, not wanting her to worry about potentially trespassing. As she went on and gave her name and pride, Mez tilted his head. He had heard stories about the Ela'wadiyi but he had never come across one of its members. That would explain the blue markings... "Yes, I've heard of it," he said with a grin that probably was a bit too wide to look friendly. His tone was quite cheerful all the same. "Never been, but others have. Now I see," he added with a chuckle. "Those blue markings are tattoos, are they not?" He gave his head a little shake to settle his mane which was being tussled even more than it already was by a light breeze that had picked up. "I am Mezlijin from the Kitwana'antara. It's an honor to meet you, Laka."

"Oh, the pleasure is all mine!" Laka burbled happily, drawing a little closer before sitting down and curling her tail around her. Her eyes were wide and round and full of interest.
"Your pride sounds wonderful! They grant you the freedom to wander as you please? Even out here in unclaimed territory? My people are nomadic, of sorts, but we still have a territory that we do not cross outside of. In fact, not many of my kind leave at all; content to be where they are." She nodded, "they are tattoos. More are added to our pelt with every passing year. It's a little sad that I've run out of room as I'm sure to have many more stories to record once my journey is done."
Her smile widened, "tell me about your pride! Are all the lions there as fierce looking as you are? Are you all brave warriors?"

"Well..." There Mez had to pause, his smile faltering a bit. While it was true he could come and go as he pleased - and in fact was encouraged to - it was because the lions within his pride were quarantined. He was to spread the word to lions to stay away from his home so as to prevent more from catching the illness that plagued them. Or blessed them, depending on who you asked. "I have a role that lets me leave to inform other lions when they're getting close to our borders," he said, deciding to leave it at that. They were nowhere near his home so she was in no danger. As Laka continued to speak he tilted his head, curiosity taking over. "Tattoos...my, you've had a busy life so far!" he said with a laugh. "What brings you out here then, if your pride doesn't stray from its lands?" Her inquiry about his pride made his smile falter once again. Oh dear... "Ah...well, I'm actually not a lion," he said. He knew there were those that had never seen a hybrid before, and he always had fun educating them. "I'm half lion and half leopard. See?" he asked as he turned, showing off his incredibly fluffy yet un-tufted tail. "And there are certainly brave lions that live within the pride, although I'm not sure I'd count myself as one of them. I'm a lover, not a fighter.'

"Ah," she replied. Sort of like a guard, she supposed. "that's a very important role. My brother was a guard, himself. He loved being out on patrol, keeping his family safe from outsiders. Problem was, our guard were perhaps a little too good. Not many new people to meet. That's one of the reasons I left. A sort of loneliness, I suppose."
She paused, "our pride is very...family orientated. A close-knit community, if you like. But we're wary of outsiders and joining the pride only happens once a year during our annual festival. I adore my family and my pride but...my heart seems to have been made different from others there. They crave stability and I craved...change and adventure." She laughed, feeling giddy that she really had left her homeland. She wasn't sure she'd leave forever, but just being out here in the unknown lands made her heart race.
And then, his next words proved just how naive of the world she was.
"Not a..." she paused, listening to his explanation. "Oh!" The exclamation burst from her mouth before she could stop it, seeing for the first time that he did, indeed, look different from your average lion. How fascinating!
"I'm not even going to pretend I know what a leopard is, but your tail is wonderful!" She smiled across at him, feeling strangely smitten by this unusual male. "We should definitely be friends! Can we? Please? You're by far, the most interesting person I've ever met in my whole life! I can patrol a bit with you and you can tell me all about this world I apparently have no knowledge in at all!"

Mez had to admit the pride she came from sounded rather sheltered, but not unlike his own pride that was sheltered for different reasons. They knew of the world around them but chose to remain distant so as not to infect unwilling lions with the plague that never seemed to leave them. Her pride, however, sounded closed off because it didn't want to make that family-like bond lessen. He had to laugh a bit at her surprise, and what she said was testament to his thoughts. She didn't know what a leopard was...goodness! "Well...just picture a small lion, I suppose. With a tail like this," he said, flicking his own a bit. "And no mane at all on the males. Maybe just a tuft like you," he amended, with a wide, toothy grin. Her request made him nod, more than happy to educate her about the world she had just tumbled into. "Of course! And you can tell me about your pride and where you come from. Just because you grew up there doesn't mean you don't have anything to teach me, too." He was always eager to learn more about anything and everything, and while Laka had been sheltered her whole life, he was sure she had some traditions or teachings from her home that he could learn about.

"To think that two different species could find love!" Laka gushed dreamily. Where she came from, flings were unheard of and to have cubs was to be married for life. If she caused offense, it was only due to her somewhat extreme naivety. "It sounds ever so romantic! Unexpected love." She sighed, a paw across her heart. A fairy tale come to life.
"I would love to tell you about my home. I'll hear about yours, too. I do hope your pride won't miss you too much. I'll try not to keep you from it too long." She smiled at him, enchanted by his 'uniqueness' and trying not to show it too much.
With a small smile, she gave him a little bump with her shoulder and bounded forwards, turning back to look at him. "Let's go find some food and I can tell you all about the Shadow Clan."
