Jan was settling in to life at the Prytaneum. Certainly it was a step down in luxury from the life he'd had beforehand, finding himself in a dorm situation had been a bit of a shock to the system, but he'd adjusted as he always inevitably did in the end. With Houdini back in his care things felt closer to home and with even his horse now stabled on the site, it was more convenient than even the drive it had been to his pasture.
Star had also settled in rather well to his new stables, being only minorly hostile to people and causing only a relatively small ruckus over the stabled mares. Jan simply intended to run off a little of his pent up energy and that day had decided to take him out to the shops in Hillgrove to get some cat food and supplies. Kitted up with some saddlebags (and an outfit which was all sleek jodpurs and expense) he made a merry jaunt of it.
It was pleasant weather thanks to the recent warm spell and the walk was pleasant, with star being well behaved and not too flighty. Evidently his time in the poseidon stables had been doing him well and the steady care was benefitting the hot-natured horse in no small way. He, like much of Jan's possessions, had been a purchase made in the spirit of grand over compensation rather than practicality and hearkened back to an expensive bloodline with tremendous potential in hunting and with a distinctly thoroughbred temper. He'd only entered the most basic competitions and had considered it more about the look of the thing than the use, much like everything else.
And there was still of course, the matter of taking Rodney on a date. The shy man would not respond to him being forward, and in a strange turn of events, he did not actually feel like being forward with him anyway, it would feel like a violation to even attempt something so crass with something so essentially pure. No, a simple date would do, or well, if not simple, a traditional date, one which adhered sternly to the possibly outdated traditions of wooing and romance. There would be flowers, there would be a candlelit dinner and at the end of the night the most he would seek would be a kiss. He would make it an arrangement directly from the movies, no one could be offended by that right?
Socialising on the whole was rather difficult for Jan lately, he'd become a fish out of water, separated from his usual marks and placed somewhere he didn't know how to impress anyone. What formerly was a potential point of relating to his peers now no doubt came across as haughty affectation but it wasn't like copying the mannerisms of the young would help either.
All he could do was persevere as he was and have them think of him as a harmless and naive older man, perhaps a little romantic, perhaps a little idealistic, that was all he could aim for.
People were always so very difficult, but at the very least there was a cat waiting for his dinner at home who cared about nothing more than his deserved free food. This was simple, cats were simple.
It was a pity people were not cats.
