[25/25 | LEILA]: smad

Leila didn't want to be given a mask. She didn't want the responsibility. Her conscience wouldn't let her kill someone, even indirectly -- and that would be what the gift would do, by decreasing the chance of survival for everyone else. All her conflicting feelings on the decision she had to make now made for an uncomfortable background static against which she received her next piece of crucial information.

Now she was angry. And, for once, determined. Her course through the halls of the manor became more obvious with each corner she turned and her footsteps became heavy enough to crack the floors again. She was making a beeline for the doorway to the Emerald Alcove, where she was sure her target would show up eventually.

Thorne (Masked) | | 25/25 | | : ^ )

Thorne sighed when Leila appeared near the Emerald Alcove again. He had been lingering mutinously through the halls, working his way back down, tearing through the perfect confrontation in his head. Earlier, Leila had been an interesting piece of meet to him.

Now, she was a road block.

"Oh darling," Thorne exhaled sharply, hooking his arms behind his back and tilting his head, "Now what are you looking for down here? There's only broken toys in that room."

[25/25 | LEILA]: o hi

"As a matter of fact," replied Leila with a clenched jaw and shivering fists, "I was looking. For you." Her face was having trouble setting on a clear expression, but she was full of nervous energy as she started walking slowly but smoothly to close the distance. "I promise not to bore you this time." All she needed to do was get him close to the wall, any wall, and --

[25/25 | THORNE (masked)]: fite/?? now?????

Thorne blinked owlishly at her. (Or perhaps cat-like. It was difficult to tell.)

His smile bled contempt, razor-sharp disdain.

"You already are," he drawled, tilting his head at her. He had no time for games and this one was clawing for violence. If she wanted it though, she would have to try harder than that. With ease, he sidestepped around her and spun around. He'd been taught better than to put his back to his enemy.

"Come at me with conviction," he drawled, "or don't come at all."

[25/25 | LEILA]: fisticuffing (+2 to combat)

It was true, Leila was not much of a fighter at all. She could count the number of genuine scraps she'd ever gotten into on one hand. But she knew some magic, and in the worst case she could call out for help or -- she should have grabbed backup. s**t.

Her momentum was quite fierce for someone her size, allowing her to stay in motion and recover from the failed attack. As he goaded, she lunged forward -- throwing her hands onto either of his shoulders -- and rammed him quickly and violently into the ground.

Bits of the floor were still creaking and splintering under the weight as Leila stared down at the impostor from behind her mask, shocked at her success but recovering quickly.

"How's that, buddy?"

Thorne blinked up at Leila, a rumble in his throat as the stars cleared from his eyes and he shook the pain from his system with a hiss of irritation. Oh, well. He guessed he could spare a few minutes on this beast of woman.

"Alright," he sighed, looking relatively unphased by the fact that he was now on the floor, "I'll give you one free question for that show of strength."

His eyes flicked up at her.

"Choose wisely. I'm running low on patience."

[25/25 | LEILA]: interview time!

"Careful," Leila quipped, "I'm not very good at controlling my weight. But I get heavier when I get angry, and lemme tell ya, I'm in a pretty bad mood." There wasn't much muscle behind her current grip at all. It was all magically generated density. Her knees had dug little craters into the floor on either side of him.

"A friend of mine called your kind dead-flesh. But I'm guessing you're not exactly vampires, so why don't you help me make sense of that?"

Part of her was thinking of what Lace, in the dress less modest than her own, had said. 'Will' was magic. She should be able to use magic to pull a truth out of him, but how was that supposed to work?

[ 20/25 | THORNE (masked) ]

"Wow, murder, that's new," Thorne responded, sounding hurt, "really, Leila? You want that in your memory?" His smile flashed, truly his twins, hurt and fond, a perfect replica. "Well, if you insist."

The question made him snort and let his head fall back against the floor. "Dead-flesh. That's rude." His eyes fluttered closed and he exhaled sharply, body going limp. It was almost like he'd just decided in that moment to take a nap, right there on the ground.

An uncomfortable number of seconds later, Thorne hummed.

"Well, we are nothing good for you," he said. "Next question, next question. After all, tick-tock goes the clock, or something like that."

[25/25 | LEILA]

"You're not much better than a murderer yourself," said Leila, "trying to steal someone else's life completely. That's what you're doing, isn't it?" But he was right. She didn't want to kill him. She already felt ridiculous sitting here trying to be heroic, like she was auditioning for the part and failing miserably. All she really wanted was to be at home knowing everyone was safe. But instead she was in this cruel game, wearing this cruel dress, discovering a new cruel reality with every corner she turned in this ******** mansion.

The double's attitude slid under her skin and itched away at her until her face scrunched up with frustration under her mask and she redoubled her grip, heaving her weight against the ground. "Quit being cute, already!"

[ 20/25 | THORNE (masked) | +3 to attack ] : LOL

Thorne blinked at the frustrated comment and chuckled.

"Am I?" he asked, his voice sweet and gentle. "I'm only following orders."

With a terrifying speed, Thorne switched their positions, ruthlessly efficient in his movement. His knee slammed into Leila's stomach, a vicious reminder that he was most certainly not the real Thorne.

"Want to try and ask another question?"

[20/25 | LEILA]: ******** ow - but doing a magic

She'd had the wind knocked out of her before in the most gruesome way possible, but having been violently torn in half didn't prepare her for the jagged floor smacking into her back and digging into it while her opponent's knee served for the other side of a vice. It reminded her of a memory she doggedly chased away. No time to get lost, now.

"Seems unfair... why don't you ask me something this time?"

Focus. Think of secrets eating away at his throat like maggots; bursting out of his mouth like flies. Focus.

"Boring," Thorne sing-songed, rolling his eyes as he looked down at Leila, eyes bright beneath his jangling mask. "Are you really trying to play that game with me?" He grinned and it was a violent snare of teeth and lips, more a snarl than anything.

"Alright, I'll be nice, for old times sake."

He paused, savoring his thoughts with a rumbling hum.

"Why are you hesitating to do what needs to be done?"

[20/25 | LEILA]: time 2 cast

There was an intense burst of -- scarab legs, yellow light, headaches, anxiety? -- a hot mess of ideas that didn't fit together -- that slapped into the double like a large balloon or bubble popping in his face. It was not a pretty sight of magic at all, and didn't even lead to the miracle Leila wanted, but at least it got some more distance between them.

"Well, I've got a lot I have to think about," she growled in reply. "Comes with having a real life. Not something you could understand."

She should have noticed the impostor sooner.

Maybe it was good Thorne couldn't remember her. He didn't deserve such a s**t friend.

[ 20/25 | THORNE (masked) | +3 to attack ] : LOL

Thorne popped to his feet, shocked a little by the magic, but nowhere near as phased as his lesser twin might be. A burst of sound escaped his throat. He skittered back, rumbling, irritated, and shook his head with a sigh.

"Rude, how very rude," he chided, his voice slow and milky like melting butter or honey poisoned, "you really think that's any way to treat me?" He spread his arms out, rolling his eyes at Leila with a contemptuous smile.

"I might have stolen his life, but you were the one who never even noticed he was gone. Do you know what she does to dogs that bite? She puts them on leashes and she lashes everything they love until they're broken. Over and over again, and you could have come. You could have come sooner."

He paused. He laughed. It was a sound like shattering glass. Cruel and terrible.

"But you didn't, and now look what's left. Better me than him. Better a monster than some shattered thing."

He threw his head to one side with a snort.

"So ask your question. Or go away."

[25/25 | LEILA]: ):

The double's words matched exactly what was on Leila's mind, and she wilted visibly at the verbal onslaught. But--

"No." The shame was still all over face as she tried to push through, slowly shaking her head. "You're wrong. A monster's never better. Just because you can act like you have your s**t together doesn't make you better." She was acutely aware of just how much her half ruined dress was showing. How the ******** was she still talking??

"You act so ******** proud, but you're nothing but a parasite. What do you even do with yourself when you don't have a host to imitate?"

That was her question, apparently.
