User ImageIt was a sunny, cold day when Jens awoke to find himself alone in the den. He stretched his small paws and yawned before getting up to head out. His mother and father were more apt to leaving them alone now that their eyes were open and they could eat actual food. Everyone knew them by sight and even with the snowy stigma against those with wintery pelts, those pride members knew better than to do anything to the queen's children.

Blinking his golden eyes in the sun, Jens decided he'd follow the tracks in the snow to wherever they led. He was sure his siblings had bounded out before him and the tracks were evidence of that - they were small and there were areas where the snow had been flattened, indicating their playful behavior.

Trudging through the fresh powder, Jens found the going a bit slow. He was still a bit small, after all, and it seemed a bunch of snow had fallen overnight. He paused under a tree where the snow wasn't quite so deep to catch his breath. This was hard work!

She and her siblings had been rescued from the cold, placed in a warm den and fed warm milk. They had recovered from their ordeal, but the snow blue cub couldn't fathom why their mother had left them out there. Well left them in their den so long they'd gotten so hungry they'd gone looking for her only to get lost. Nothing had felt right to her since then.

The little cub sat in the snow, seemingly unaware of the cold around her. The sun was out, but didn't seem to warm her any. She had watched other cubs playing earlier that morning, but had resisted their attempts to get her to play too. Rin was wary of trusting others for fear they might leave her like her mother did. So she'd sat in the snow and refused to move. Eventually they'd left.

By now, Rin decided that her bum was maybe starting to get a bit cold. Perhaps she should move. But where?

Jens sat chewing at a snowball between his toes for a few minutes before deciding to just leave it. It would come out eventually, right? Lifting his head, he spotted a blue cub not far from where he sat under the tree. He tilted his head a bit before realizing he hadn't seen her before. Well, his mother had always told them to be friendly towards new lions, so he decided this would be a good chance to do so.

"Hello," he said as he plodded through the snow again. "I'm Jens. What's your name."

He sat down in front of the blue female, golden eyes unblinking. He could be a bit unnerving at times, but he was trying hard, honest!

Oh gosh, what an awkward set they are gonna be even if they don't get along. XD

Mind made to get up, she was above to move when another cub approached. Strikingly familiar to those of before. Rin held her place as he approached. Ice blue eyes stared warily back into his. She pondered his question for a moment. He wasn't asking her to play, just her name. Eventually she decided since he had given his, she could give hers. "Rin Kokoro."

If he didn't want to play, then just what did he want? Her eyes roamed over his markings. She noted the snowflakes and particularly the markings on his rump that made her think of an icy, cold wind. Despite looking similar to the others, he was quite different. With a shrug she rose to her feet and started to stretch.

Jens waited patiently for her name, and when she gave it he nodded. Rin Kokoro. It was a bit long, but he knew some lions had longer names. One of the guards that oversaw his mother, Ezen, had an incredibly long name that he had only heard once. After the encounter he had asked his mother why his name was so long, and she had simply chuckled and told him to call the massive lion by his nickname.

"That's long," he stated as Rin got up to stretch. "Can I call you something shorter. Long names are hard to remember."

His voice was flat and monotone even through the questions, no indication that they were questions at all except for the wording.

*snickers* everyone would wonder if they really meant it or were just saying it.

He was remarkably different than the others. Much calmer, like her, and unlike those other cubs who were all over the place. Just look at what their paws did to the snow! Rin like that he didn't pressure her or try to rush her to give her name. She finished her stretching and shook the remaining clumps of snow from her tail.

The cub, no she needed to remember his name. Jens had asked her name, and she'd given it. Now he wanted a shorter name? It didn't make sense to her. Why not ask for her nickname first then and save all the trouble? "I guess. Is Rin short enough?"

Her ears perked up. She'd heard the question, but she hadn't heard it. That was odd. Rin look at closer look at him. "Why do you talk like that?"

"Rin. That's better," Jens said, licking his lips as the wind blew some of the fluffier snow into his face. It made his little whiskers tremble a bit as the chilly melted snow dripped from the, but almost as soon as it had come, it was gone.

"Talk like what," he asked, blinking slowly before tilting his head to stare at the other cub once more. "I'm talking like I always do." When he was older he'd be able to notice the difference between his rather expressionless voice, but for now he didn't hear any difference in tone between himself and his more enthusiastic siblings, let alone other lions he'd never met.

"Where do you live," he continued, looking around. "I've not seen you before." Then again, he had only just started exploring the island they called home.

How Rin was better than Rin Kokoro or Kokoro, she didn't know. It was still all her name right? Whatever. If it made him happy in his way. She snorted some errant snow from her nose as the same wind blew it into her face. Pah.

The little cub stared at him hard, trying to figure out if he was pulling her leg or serious. "You ask a question, but don't ask it." Rin tried to explain. Being a cub, she wasn't very good at it. It was a puzzle. Did she really care? After thinking about it, she decided no she didn't. "Whatever. Talk how you want."

"My siblings and I just moved in with our adopted father. He found us." He was a very doting father always checking in on them.

Confused but not caring too much about how his speech patterns were different, Jens shrugged his little shoulder before reaching down to chew on his paw again, breaking up the snowballs that were finally melting between his toes. How the heck did the bigger lions walk around without getting clumps of the stuff stuck between their paw pads? It was a talent he was sure he'd never get.

"Oh." Lifting his head, Jens trained his gaze on Rin once more. "Is your dad that leopon mom talks to all the time. She said something about him finding cubs." Jens really didn't know much about the rest of the pride, but when it came to the lions that checked up on his mother while his father was out and about, he knew those well.

She watched clean his feet then ask a silly question. Rin looked down her nose at him. "How exactly should i know that?" It wasn't like she'd just arrived or anything and hardly knew anyone. Not like she hung around listening to the adults talk. "I don't even know who your mother is." At this point she was still too young to realize her adopted father was different from normal males.

The blue cub took a closer look at him. "You look cold. Perhaps you should move to a warmer place." She didn't think she was cold herself now that she had moved a bit. Not cold, but getting hungry. Maybe she should try to find that female who was letting them nurse.

Jens tilted his head a bit as Rin scoffed at him. Didn't everyone know his mother? He hadn't been told just how important she was to the pride, but in his mind, his mother was the greatest lioness and his father the greatest lion and everyone must know them.

"My mom is Elsa," he supplied helpfully even as he stood. His butt was getting kind of cold. "Yeah, I will find a warmer place." Shifting a bit, he wobbled out through the snow to head back to the den.

"Bye Rin. Nice meeting you," he said as he went. "Don't get a cold butt."

Fin!

Rin gave a tiny eye roll as he named his mom. Well whatever. At least she knew the name even if she probably couldn't pick her out of a crowd. He took her suggestion rather well. She decided a nice cozy den wouldn't be missed right now. "Bye Jens. I won't." The blue cub turned and padded off through the snow toward her home.
