It was getting to be that time of year again, the time where he and his siblings grew just a little bit older. Happy Endings always enjoyed his birthday and the fact that he shared it with three siblings didn't bother him one bit. His birthday was just another excuse for it to be all about him. People lavished him with gifts and fed him cake. It was what he wanted every day to be like.
Despite the fact that he didn't really care much one way or the other that it was also his siblings birthday, the flutter stallion found himself being drawn towards the shops in search of appropriate gifts for his sisters and his brother. The purple male had already settled on some strange indie movie for his sister Danger and a makeup palette for his brother Hallow, but Penny was proving much harder to please.
His more morbidly minded sister wouldn't be interested in makeup or movies. What she wanted was weird and creepy occult objects that you couldn't find in the average shop. She wanted tales of terror, medical illustrations depicting gruesome illnesses, and dead things galore. He knew about her stash of finger bones, even if she kept telling their parents that they were only "papier mache." Of course, Happy didn't really know where he could just find some random dead stuff other than a cemetery and he wasn't quite sure he could get away with digging up corpses (nor did he want to exert the effort). This left him blindly wandering around the city hoping he would stumble upon some shop that might have a passable gift for his favorite sister. NeonMace XD I'm assuming she has her own little shop tucked somewhere.

If it was strange and creepy that Happy Endings wanted, strange and creepy was what he would get.
Lovely Corpse usually didn't need much; she usually used strands of her own mane as thread and would search for dead animals in the wild, but the mare found herself needing some new needles and cotton for stuffing. Of course, she had a few dead animals tucked haphazardly into a satchel hanging off her flank, limbs conspicuously poking out here and there. Most other ponies had gotten used to the sight and no longer questioned when they saw her in town.
Noel had given her daughter some funds for new needles (and some actual thread, darn it) and sent Lovely Corpse one her way.
With one freshly dead squirrel laying precariously on her back, the mare happened to pass by Happy Endings without a second glance. She wasn't very good at paying attention to the world around her, usually focused on a single task at a time.cursedandwandering she doesn't but I have an idea! <3

The disgusting bouquet of rotting meat wafted towards Happy's nostrils as the strange mare passed him by. For a moment the stallion just stared in shock to see another phony dragging a bunch of dead animal carcasses around. Wasn't she grossed out by the maggots and blood? What did she even need them for? Maybe some serial pet killer had blackmailed her into doing their dirty work?! The flutter gave a shrug, eyeing the mare with interest. Dead things... Wasn't he just looking for some dead things? A light bulb went off in Happy's head as he began a slow glide toward the mare. Perhaps...
"Oh my, miss, what big beautiful eyes you have." He winked, trotting up as close alongside her he could manage without gagging from his proximity to the animal carcasses. "Your look is so striking. I'm sure you must be told how beautiful you are a thousand times a day."

To be honest, it was questionable whether Lovely Corpse even had a sense of smell -- it never bothered her. She didn't exactly like the smell, but it was something she never noticed nor minded. Her father had been bringing her dead animals since she had found her purpose as a filly.
As she trotted forward, the teal mare's ear turned back at Happy Endings' voice. At first it didn't register that he had been talking to her particularly, but Lovely Corpse turned to look at him regardless. Her eyes landed squarely on him, meeting the stallion's eyes, and she stared for a moment in silence with only her head turned to him. When the attention on her didn't shift, she finally turned to face Happy Endings' fully.
"M'no. B'thank," Lovely Corpse said, tilting her head to look her companion over. The mare didn't move from her spot as she examined Happy Endings, merely moving her head this way and that -- it almost seemed like her eyes remained in one direction rather than shifting. In an agonizing minute of studying, she looked back into his eyes and nodded. "Prett'."

The stallion preened, running a hoof through his mane as the mare looked him over. He was pretty sure she had just complimented him. at least that's what he thought the "Prett'" was referring too. I mean, how could he blame her? He was pretty damn handsome if he did say so himself. Happy let out a contented sigh as he pictured himself in all his glory. Yeah, he was really great.
The flutter snapped back to attention as a gentle breeze brought the stench wafting back to his nose. The purple male grimaced as he was reminded of his purpose. "Well, you really should be told more often. You're such a stunner."
He leaned closer to her, trying to smile conspiratorially. "So, what is a pretty lady like you doing with all these dead animals?"

As if on cue, at the stallion's second compliment, Lovely Corpse finally blinked once. Her smile never left, a constant, as she unintentionally stared Happy Endings down.
His preening had gone unnoticed.
"Mm?" the mare hummed, turning her head to glance at her satchel. After another moment of staring, this time at her bag, she turned to face the purple pony once more. "Gon' stuff 'em," she responded plainly, as if it weren't strange at all -- and possibly the most clear she had spoken since the stallion initiated conversation.

Staring back expectantly, the flutter's wings twitched with impatience as he waited for her to speak. The mare reacted slowly and the smile never left her face. Happy wasn't quite sure if it was a cute or creepy thing, but he knew it was better to act like he found it charming if he was to get what he wanted.
"Oh really? Stuff them you say?" He flitted even closer, peeking around at the bits of the dead creatures he could see. "You wouldn't happen to have an extra one you don't plan on keeping after you stuff them do you? I've really been looking for an interesting piece..."

He did come out searching for creepy in the first place...
As still as stone, Lovely Corpse responded; "Mhmm." She watched with interest as Happy Endings hovered closer, eyes eventually landing on his cutie mark. The mare stared at it for a moment, intrigued. "Go' lots. Come?"
Her attention went back to the stallion's face, her head staying in his direction as Lovely Corpse turned her body. She waited expectantly at the other pony, waiting for him to follow before turning her head around and trotting forward. Her gate wasn't exactly fast but it was certainly faster than her other actions.
Most of their walk was silent, Lovely Corpse either distracted or focused -- it was hard to tell which -- as she led Happy Endings back to her home. She picked up random things she found on the way: dead bugs and animals, any types of remains, mostly.
Noel and Negative were out of the house for the time being so no one greeted or stopped either of them as the two ponies entered. Lovely Corpse led her new "friend" back into her room. Upon entrance, she stepped back to reveal an entire collection of taxidermy animals, cleaned skeletal remains and jarred insects resting on shelves and desks -- basically any flat surface unless it was a wall mount. The mare didn't necessarily seem proud of her work, appearing rather neutral... or at least as much as her permanent expression would convey.
"C'n have any."

Well, that was awfully easy. Happy could only attribute it to his smooth tongue. Clearly he was just so skilled with words that all the ladies just instantly wanted to lavish him with gifts once they heard him speak. The flutter couldn't help but puff up with pride as the strange mare led him to wherever she kept her dead animals. Too pleased with himself, not even for a second did he pause to consider that it might be a bad idea to follow a stranger who collected dead things to their house and instead he followed her blindly. Sure, it was a little weird for a girl to pause every few feet to pick up a dead bug or some baby bird that had died falling out of it's nest, but that was just this mare's special quirk! You know, what gave her her purpose. Definitely not a sign of potential danger!
If this girl's thing was dead stuff the stallion was fine with it. His search for his sister's birthday present had been proving fruitless until he'd stumbled upon this strange mare.
As the toothy female stopped at their final destination Happy's eyes sparkled with greed. He could have any huh? Well then, he better take the best thing there to give to his sister. Then Penny would really be under his hoof. The stallion licked his lips, flitting closer to the morbid curiosities that filled the room.
"So many interesting things. You really are a fascinating lady." He gave her a smile, carefully picking up a dead possum to examine it.
"My name is Happy Endings. Tell me, beautiful, what objects took you the most time?"

Perhaps it was her simple nature that made her so kind, but all of Happy Endings' compliments and smooth talking had glossed over Lovely Corpse like a pair of dead eyes. No, she made everything for the passion of it -- in all her life she had never sold a single piece, always preferring to give it away. It was a good thing Negative and Noel didn't mind her staying at home, even as a full-grown mare.
"Than,'" she answered simply, not exactly processing the compliment, itself -- more like she was thanking him as if he were complimenting her work. When the stallion seemed content to take a look around, Lovely Corpse stepped away to set her satchel and its contents into a special freezer that Negative had been kind enough to get her so that her spoils wouldn't, well, spoil.
At his introductions, the mare had been slowly making her way back to the middle of the room, approaching Happy Endings but giving him space to look around freely. "Lov'ly Corpse," she introduced back; to no surprise, 'corpse' was her clearest word. Taking his question into thought, she stared at him blankly for a moment before stepping beside the stallion. Without another word, the mare carefully nudged a jackalope -- a full scene added with a bull's skull, grass and branches -- onto her head with surprising balance. Again, she looked at Happy Endings expectantly.

Well, wasn't that just the weirdest thing ever. Happy eyed the Jackalope scene warily. It certainly was interesting... He wasn't sure if his sister would like it, but the dark eyed mare did say it was something she'd worked hard on. Plus they were both weirdoes, so they must have common interests. They both liked dead things after all. To prove the point this mare was balancing a taxidermied animal on her head for goodness sake!
"Wow. That is very detailed." The flutter smiled, stepping closer so as to examine. He tossed his mane casually as he neared her, trying to give his best smolder. "I think i like what i see," he murmured, staring into the dark pits of the mare's eyes. "Your name really suits you. Lovely, you most definitely are."

Lovely Corpse stared with interest, or as close to interest as she could really express, as Happy Endings examined her work. She managed to stay completely still, unnaturally so, as the stuffed jackalope and its mount didn't move an inch. She had no idea that he was questioning and judging relentlessly in his mind -- but, to be honest, she wouldn't have really cared... or maybe even registered.
After a moment longer of her balancing act, the teal mare set the display down on the floor.
Happy Ending's smolder... well, had no effect. Lovely Corpse's response was just to blink, not particularly caring about the flutter's apparent attention. "Thank," she responded, her voice even and low. It was a bit lower than one would expect from her girlish face. She easily mistook his compliments to be directed at her taxidermy, having absolutely no understanding of flirting. Without realizing the connotations of her response, she continued to smile and stare, saying, "Can have if you wan'."

He could have her, huh? The flutter's wings gave a twitch as his eyes sparkled with amusement. If only it was always this easy. Of course, the fact that he so frequently failed (which he would never admit to himself as being his fault), just made the successes so much more worth it. The stallion tossed his wavy mane as he strolled dangerously close to the mare. He kept his head held high despite his petite stature as he looked Lovely in the bottomless pits that served as her eyes.
"I think i'll take you," Happy smiled, the gears turning in his brain as he plotted how to turn this into a free dinner, having practically forgot about his purpose here in the first place. He raised his transparent hoof, in his patented lady killer move, to brush a strand of her hair out of the way. "How would you like to go to dinner with me?"

cursedandwandering i'm dying this is great LOL Just as Happy Endings' attention didn't leave her, Lovely Corpse's attention didn't leave the stallion. For the moment she did no studying -- just merely staring; whether it was out of politeness or being strange, there was no telling (though the latter was probably more likely).
Take her? The mare tilted her head as Happy Endings moved some mane out of her face. The movement was simple but easily misconstrued as a reciprocation of the sentiment. Lovely Corpse had no concept of being conned or whether Happy Endings' intentions were sincere or not. Still, she smiled on with that toothy, strange maw.
"'Kay," she said -- she knew nothing of romance, of "dates," as she never really read, never watched movies or TV, had never asked either of her parents involving anything but love. She did love her mother and father, but for the time being romantic love was definitely lost on the mare. Even though the concept flew a mile over her head, food was food.

Happy's face lit up in a grin. Boy, he was really on a roll today. Maybe he should buy a lottery ticket. I mean, what were the chances that he'd find someone who would actually have something his sister would like for a gift and that very same person was a babe who was totally interested in him. He could only imagine how Lovely must of been feeling right now. She was probably struggling to keep from swooning he thought smugly. Man, he was so great.
"Are there any restaurants you would prefer, beautiful?" The stallion offered his hoof as he began to head to the door. If he was lucky the odd mare would have loaded pockets and a taste for the expensive. She did live in a rather big house after all. The flutter licked his lips, ready for a luxurious meal.
