Mechanics are hard to come by these days.
Especially when you're a rebel.

Forera had missed the feeling of working hard and lifting. Just the simple fact of her working was enough to make the tealblood energized and eager, humming softly as she helped out in the hub. Sometimes here, sometimes there, but in the end it'd always be lifting. She'd never been good with the technical stuff, anyways.

So when her robot hand decided to move on it's own accord, Forera felt the hairs on her neck stand on edge. She froze, releasing the pillar she was holding and allowing it to fall to the floor with a loud thuwmp. She stared at her hand a moment. It'd been a while since she'd brought it in for repairs-- Ever since they'd been found. Forera pursed her lips, cursing under her breath as she lifted the pillar again, this time with her own hand-- A little harder this time, now that she could only use one hand. Her other simply did not move. After bringing it to its destination, the tealblood took a few minutes to inspect it, trying to flex or move it in any way-- Normally hitting it would help, right? Though she wanted to be careful. Maybe she could get it checked?

Forera headed over to the nerd department, curiously looking for any troll she might've recognized, somehow. Oh hey, wasn't that...! "Eyyy, cutie red girl over there!" Forera exclaimed, unsure of what to call her-- Tevini was, after all, her real name. She didn't want to mess anything up! "I think I might need yer help. Maybe? Probably." She showed her her completely messed up hand. "Juuust a little. Do you know how to deal with these things?" She asked, seeming a little lost.

Engrossed in the research that was happening around her, Tevini felt her mind start to hurt a little from information overload. But in a good way, somehow. She felt so inspired to try many new things- to see what new theories could be applied to her personal creations. The part of her that was scared to be here was pushed aside by the part that was excited. She didn't know when she'd next get a chance like this again. It was only after a strange metallic sound dangled in front of her that Tevini realized the loud voice in the room had been meant for her.

"What? I-" Eyes widened at the limp mechanical hand. That wasn't good. Glancing up at the troll, she recognized Forera's face but found herself fumbling for her disguised name. Tevini had made a point to remember the tealblood after hearing stories about her from Cerpin. She didn't know quite what their relationship was but it seemed like he liked her well enough. Plus she'd apparently been the one to stand up for him long ago when they'd first found the swamp.

She liked her, despite not spending much time with her.

"This is terrible. What happened?" Reaching to gently examine the hand, Tevini squinted and tried to make sense of the damage. Testing a few of the appendages manually, she looked for where the mechanics were failing. Was it a jam or had something gone wrong with the wiring? Robotic limbs weren't exactly her specialty but she knew enough of engineering to understand the basics of how it worked. She supposed if she really wanted to be useful to the Rebellion, it was a skill she'd have to develop more. Muerte could only be in one place at one time, after all. He was already getting quite the workout as the only medical expert in their ranks.

"I think there's a lab with some tools down the hall. Tell me what it's doing and when it started." Tevini lead the way out of the room.

Forera shrugged. "Honestly, I'm not sure!" She murmured, blinking at it innocently before watching her move and fiddle with it. Sometimes, if she moved her ring finger, the entire hand would react and shudder along with it. Forera blinked blankly. "Ah, uh, I-- I mean like, I was lifting stuff, right? And then it just freaked out on me and dropped whatever I was holdin'. I dunno, it might be a malfunction, but I sure hope it ain't." Forera murmured, following after the younger redblood and holding her hand carefully. She didn't want to loose that hand. She'd have no hand, and then she'd be an invalid. No use to anyone, she couldn't... Forera exhaled. It was okay. Even if Tevini didn't know much, she was sure she knew more than Forera, definitely. The thought a bit more. "I haven't checked it up in a while, so uh," She smiled sheepishly-- "That might be it. I've also been punching a lot of things. Other trolls too. Their faces were kind of, uh, hard, y'know." She felt a bit self conscious. It was like she'd broken something and had to admit she'd messed it up like a wiggler to their lusus. Forera swallowed a little. "Though like, I won't punch yours or anything! Only like, really dumb trolls. Or annoying ones. Y'feel me?"

Tevini frowned as she listened to Forera's explanation. It sounded like the mechanical hand had undergone quite a bit of stress recently, more than it was likely designed for. Examining it as she nodded along to the tealblood's story, the redblood only stopped at the mention of punching other trolls. Nervous eyes glanced up immediately and she appeared ready to bolt before Forera reassured her she wouldn't attack her. Even then Tevini wasn't sure how safe the older girl was. It wasn't that she didn't trust Forera but rather that the tealblood clearly underestimated her own strength. If she was anything like Cerpin, she was also unpredictable.

"I see. It's about time for a check up then." They'd reached the lab now and Tevini opened some drawers to collect a few tools to work with. She'd had to come in disguise unfortunately and thus didn't have her usual apron of equipment already with her. Not very many spare parts either, sadly. Still, there had to be something she could do as a temporary fix.

"Don't be alarmed, I'm going to open the casing now." Her voice was soft and hopefully calming. She couldn't imagine what it was like to lose a limb and now watch someone open your new one. Forera was a tough seeming troll though, she'd be okay. Unscrewing the cover, Tevini squinted to get a look at the inner workings and try to discern what could be the cause of the malfunction. The wiring looked a little loose but not broken. Was there a broken or compromised part somewhere in there? Poking around carefully, Tevini wondered how old the robotic hand was. When had Forera gotten it? Was it possible that she'd... outgrown it?

"How long have you had this model? It looks a little small for you, to be honest." The redblood bit her lip, not sure how to say what she was considering next.

"O-oh. Ya think so?" Forera asked, feeling a little awkward-- She wasn't exactly the best at taking care of things, sure, but she... Had the best intentions? She guessed. Upon their arrival to the lab, Forera followed after her, feeling beads of sweat begin on the back of her neck. She sat down to make it easier for her to look at, and gingerly placed it where Tevini needed, willing to do anything to fix what was wrong with her hand. She just wanted to feel whole, again.

"Oh. Er. Okay, um. Just-- I..." Cerpin trusted her. This meant she could, too. "I trust you." Forera murmured, a little tense but allowing her to fiddle around inside, occasionally making the tealblood wince in discomfort, but bear the pain. It was alright, just her hand, it'd be fine... Forera's gaze lifted to look at the redblood before falling on her hand. At her words, the tealblood expression seemed older, wiser, even. "It's been sweeps since I got this. I hadn't thought t'change it. I... I guess I might have to." Murmured the teen, more to herself than to Tevini.

Gaze darting up to the redblood, Forera gave her a sheepish smile. "Never thought I'd get too big for somethin', hehe." Forera joked, referring to her small stature. "It happens, I guess. Y'wouldn't happen to know a place, would'ya?" Forera asked, half serious, half jokingly. She sighed, shaking her head lightly. "Gonna see if I can get me something in the black market, or somethin'. Should maybe work for the next sweep or two..." Forera considered. She didn't even consider Tevini as an option, not wanting to trouble the redblood further.

"No, there was a place in southern Chittentown but I don't know how receptive it'll be to you now..." That they were rebels, anyway. The problem was finding a business that didn't watch the clientele very well. Tevini remembered seeing a few robotic prosthetic shops tucked away in the backstreets of Alternia but she'd never actually gone inside and checked the atmosphere of them before. It was simply a place she'd had no need for until now. Her focus on space engineering had blinded her to the importance of developing her skills in more than one field. She'd have to change that.

"You can't trust the black market." The redblood rubbed at her arm nervously, feeling bad to deliver more bad news. "You get what you pay for there." She warned. Tevini had considered buying parts through underworld contacts now that she couldn't get parts the normal way. However, she'd received items of various quality. She didn't feel it mattered as much when it came to simple things but a complex moving part hand had the potential to go horribly wrong or even be a scam. Tevini winced at the very idea of Forera being ripped off and then handless.

"Someone as active as you needs a hand of better craftsmanship. I..." The redblood swallowed, unsure of what she was doing next.

"I can't promise it'll be quick but I could..." Her voice grew quieter and higher pitched out of nervousness. "Try building you one?"

Forera sighed and mustered a strained smile at her words, rubbing her neck. "Well, that place is the only place that'd take people like me. And I don't have a "trusted mechanic" or whatever. I got this from some random dude who took all my piercings and cool s**t." Forera pursed her lips. "That greenblood in the... wet place creeps me out, and he's an a**." Forera crossed her arms, pouting. "It'd only be till I found a better one or--" Forera stopped. She blinked, looking at Tevini. Her mouth gaped. "But-- Uh. Do ya know how? I don't wanna ask the impossible from ya. 'Cause I know how it is to do s**t ya don't know, and stuff." Forera shrugged, looking at the redblood with uncertain eyes. Normally Forera would've accepted without question, but this time, she felt as though she needed to say something. "And while I'm not someone who tries to f-- Er, mess up my crap, I just kinda do it unintentionally. I'm... Not exactly a safe cookie."

Forera offered her a sheepish smile again, releasing a soft chuckle. "It'd be a lot of work, is what I'm sayin'. And y'don't know me too well. I trust ya, 'cause, y'know, a certain purpleblood we both know, and also ya were an impromptu Tunnel Snake and stuff, but that's a big responsibility for someone ya barely know." Forera pursed her lips. "I don't mean to tell ya no, though. I could really use the help. Yer bein' very sweet. But are y'sure yer up for it?"

If she'd asked her a sweep ago, Forera would've had her pegged.

Listening to the older girl speak, Tevini remained silent, letting her say her piece. She didn't feel good about what she was saying- hearing the tealblood speak of being on her own like that. With no one to help her, it was no wonder the hand had gotten to this stage. Her eyes glanced down at the machine for a moment, scanning it once more. It seemed like a metaphor, really. Forera was reaching out, she just needed someone to reach back and catch her. At her final question, the redblood took a breath and thought carefully over her words.

"You're right. I hardly know you at all." Tevini admitted. She'd only known the girl for moments at a time, the two of them never really stopping to speak to each other again after what'd happened back in the tunnels. She'd heard stories from Cerpin, sure, but that didn't count as spending time together. Still... there was one thing she knew.

"But... I heard." Tevini mumbled quieter, reaching to pluck a screwdriver from the tray next to them. She began to unscrew a piece from the hand as she continued.

"There was someone you barely knew." Now she was gathering up the wiring and tying it out of the way. "Someone I care about very much." She swallowed and pulled out a thin rod from the workstation, lining it up with an opening.

"You stepped in for him, against your friends and comrades. Against better judgement, really." Tevini admitted as she hooked a small lever to the end of the rod before clipping a different wire located by the fingers.

"I don't know what would've happened to him if you hadn't been there. You didn't have to do that... but you did." Threading the wire dangling from the mechanisms by the fingers through a small hole, she soldered it to another wire and connected it to the rest.

"I... I can't express how grateful I am in words." Her voice wavered, uncharacteristically emotional for her. She didn't know where she would've ended up if that night had gone differently. The rebels had every reason to not trust Cerpin- and it would've only been logical to kill him to prevent their new secret base from being betrayed again. Emotions had been high for everyone that night- it'd been a chaotic, traumatic time. She'd spent the entire escape terrified of where she was and what would come next. The only thing that had kept her grounded enough to continue was him.

"You've both taught me the importance of giving others a chance. Of caring for someone besides yourself." With a snap, the case clicked back over the internal mechanics of the hand.

"Let me do this. I want to." Her eyes looked up, finally, and met Forera's with an earnestness to them. Her slender hands wrapped around the metal hand, closing it into a fist to test it's maneuverability.

"That should get you through the rest of our stay. I'll start work on your new one when we leave." A small smile formed on her lips, shy but firm.
