Leonora looked at her work space and smiled. It had been a moderately busy day - she had some people come in during the morning hours before work for a massage session. After that, she cleaned up the reception area as well as her own personal space. It felt like a day well spent.

Her co-worker was out of the office for the rest of the day, and since she had no further appointments, Leonora sat at the receptionist desk. Although indoors, she could feel the heat from the outside due to a large glass door. She swiveled her chair around and took a look at their snack station. There were always chilled water bottles as well as small, nutritional snacks if anyone should need it.

The door's bell chimed and Leonora watched as a boy with white, slicked back hair came in with a package. "Hello," she greeted him happily. "How are you doing today?" Leonora gave him a bright smile.

Since getting kicked out of school, Kavinsky spent most of his free time pouring over wanted ads in the papers or on ksl so that he could pick up odd jobs and make some sort of an income. Which meant that lately, he'd become a delivery boy for some third party company that managed to partner itself with some of the clinics in the area.

They didn't need him often, which left him open for other weird jobs or more hours at the mechanic's shop but they were steady enough that he'd gotten into the routine of things. The only downside was that he was a bicycle delivery boy, mostly because he couldn't afford a car and since he wasn't an actual employee they wouldn't let him drive one of the trucks.

So, he'd parked his bike just outside the doors where he could still see it and stepped inside, package tucked beneath his arm and the clipboard with the slip to sign sitting on top. A cheery young woman greeted him with too much enthusiasm and he stared blankly at her in response.

There was a slight narrowing of his gray eyes, because he was scrutinizing her, before his expression slipped back into something passive once again. "Fine," came his gruff reply, his voice scratch and deep. He shifted the items in his hand and placed the package on the counter, pushing some of the clutter aside carelessly. "Got a package for a...Owens," he said brusquely, pulling the clipboard off the top and glancing over the messy scrawl. "Rushed order."

Leonora was happy to see the delivery boy, even though he didn't seem happy to see her. "Maybe the heat got to him?" She couldn't imagine being outside right now. Hopefully it would be cooler when she closed up for the day. "They're out of the office at the moment. Is it okay if I sign for it?"

"Would you also like to bring in your bike and take a breather?" She motioned towards the other side of the room. "You can put it over there and grab a seat." She swiveled her chair and grabbed a cold water from the fridge as well as some fruit snacks and a granola bar from a shelf. Leonora placed them on the counter between them. "I have some water and snacks here as well, if you're hungry."

"I'm not sure how much of a rush you're in, but it's a rather warm day, so best not to over exhaust yourself! I could even give you a quick message session if you're in no rush! Free of charge, of course." Leonora wasn't sure how much her boss would appreciate that, but it's not like it would take more than a few minutes.

Kavinsky looked at the woman skeptically, white brows furrowed and lips pressed into a firm, hard line. His expression darkened when she informed him that this Owens person was out of the office. "Can't." His teeth grit against each other slightly as he inhaled sharply through his nose. He had another two deliveries and normally, if delivering to an office, it would have been fine but there were specific instructions this time.

"Do you know when they'll be back?" Blunt nails tapped against the counter in irritation.

At the mention of his bike, his head swiveled that way, gray eyes sharp when they found it where he'd left it. "I don't - " he stopped, fingers curling into fists in irritation. If this job took longer than it was supposed to it would mean he'd get less deliveries and less money.

He couldn't afford that.

"I'll pass," he replied gruffly to her tentative offer. "I need to know when they'll be back." He didn't mean to be rude, but he had priorities.

Still, he didn't stop himself for reaching for the water she'd offered earlier.

"Okay... Maybe the heat's just really bad today." Leonora wasn't sure what she did to anger him, but hey, she wouldn't want to be out there in this weather. She glanced at the clock and tried to remember what time her co-worker had left. "She stepped out for lunch... I'd think she'd be back in 20 minutes or so? Is there a specific reason to why a third party can't sign for this?"

Leonora looked down at the list of things that had been ordered for the company. "Does the package say "Synergy" anywhere? If so, it would be a company package and my signature should be okay?" She didn't know of there had been any personal packages due to arrive, only those for work.

Biting her lip, she tried to find a simple solution to their problem. "Is my name indicated anywhere? Leonora Shoup? Last name S-H-O-U-P?" Leonora never liked her last name and always had to spell it out for people.

His already grouchy expression managed to sour further when Leonora gave him an estimated time of return. Twenty minutes was far too long to wait and agitation set in the way he held himself. It wasn't the girl's fault and he wasn't blaming her, even if her actions said otherwise.

"Notes just say it's for Owens," he replied, twisting the clipboard to show her the scrawled note in the 'additional information'. The same name was on the packing slip too and unfortunately for the both of them, neither Synergy nor Leonora were anywhere to be found.

The teen pulled the water closer to him, pressing the opening against his mouth and more or less swallowing it one gulp. The heat was almost unbearable, but he'd seen worse.

There was a pause then a long sigh. "Thanks," he grumbled, tongue running across white teeth when he licked his lips. Kavinsky seemed to be considering something, glancing around the office and then back to Leonora. It probably wouldn't have been too big a deal if she signed for it...

'You know what, go ahead and sign for it. If there are complications, I'll just double back after my last delivery."

Leonora watched as the boy's face grew to be more grouchy. She had hoped to make his day better, but circumstances seemed to make it a lot worse. For sure, Owens had to be talked about in any future deliveries, especially if she had to sign for it. "Owens could be stuck in this chair all day, for all that matters!"

It just felt horribly rude to Leonora.

She was glad that the delivery boy was willing to let her sign for it. Leonora quickly did so and took the package from him. "I'm sorry for all the trouble Owens caused." She pulled out another water bottle for the boy. "Here, have one for the road. At least stay hydrated while on your route!"

"May I also have your name?" Leonora pulled out a sticky note and wrote 'Owen Delivery" on it. "I'm going to have Owens call your company and make sure they don't give you grievance for letting me sign for her package. It's not your fault she's not here for it."

"It's fine."

Kavinsky could have told her that she wasn't at fault but it seemed pointless and obvious. He couldn't be bothered to thank her for her troubles, despite her attempts to alleviate the situation. Frankly, all that was on his mind was the time he'd lost and how he'd have to haul a** to be able to pick up an extra delivery or two.

He was used to scraping by with the bare minimum but now that he'd been kicked out of the dorms his meager bills had practically skyrocketed. It was hard for him to think of anything outside of; work, work, eat, work, work, sleep, work, pay bills, work.

Automatically, calloused fingers wrapped around the bottle she offered and his body tensed. "That's not necessary. It's my problem, I'll deal with it." Leonora didn't know him outside of this isolated meeting, he sure as hell wasn't going to let her call or make someone else call. He didn't want to owe anyone favors.

He stepped back and practically snatched his clipboard back, water bottle crinkling beneath his grip. "Thanks for the water," he grunted, like it was an afterthought. Then he turned to head out the door.

It was horribly hard to hold or even start a conversation with the delivery boy, but Leonora thought it was for the best. He'd need to be on his way soon if he had other packages to deliver. "You're very welcome!"

"If you need any while delivering stuff and you're nearby, please don't hesitate to come by and grab some." She waved at him as he headed for the door. Leonora looked at the sticky note on the desk. Even though he wouldn't give her his name, the company would know.

She'd make sure Owen would apologize to the company for not being around to sign the package.

Kavinsky was at the door, pulling it open when Leonora's voice caught up to him. The frown, which seemed like a permanent fixture, deepened but he looked back despite not wanting to. Gray eyes lingered on the girl for a minute before he gave her a curt nod.

He wasn't one to really talk if he didn't have to and he certainly wasn't going to smile, so a nod was the closest thing she'd get.

Exiting the clinic, the russian teen swung his leg over his bike and headed off to his next delivery.
