The wanted ad had been in the paper, on craigslist, and posted in windows and on cork boards everywhere in the city. Each was blazoned with the local radio station logo - WWMI - and advertising part time or full time work and internships. A call to the number gave you a desk worker who then set up an appointment for interview, "You'll be meeting with Wendy from the morning show- do you know her? She doesn't like offices so the interview may be a bit unorthodox." The time was mid-day, the location was the local public park, the instructions were only 'come prepared.' There was nothing more than that.

Nathaniel had seen the notice on the cork board of the Rider-Waite campus, tacked between an ad for Figure Drawing 101 models and a reminder to all students to get their IDs before September 1st or pay a fee.
It wasn't a job he would have normally been interested in - but a job was a job, and it did seem as though it was something he could potentially do in terms of his schedule. Nathaniel had called up the number the next day to set up an interview, and had tried to sound calm and collected - the opposite of what he'd felt.
But at least he'd gotten the interview, even if that meant standing in the park, dressed in a pair of khakis, a button down shirt, and a tan sweater vest. Nathaniel had his resume tucked in a file in his messenger bag, slung over his shoulder, and was looking somewhat apprehensively around.
Maybe he was in the wrong place. What did come prepared even mean?

There was a shrill whistle and on a park bench was a very thin, attractive woman with dark hair and angular bangs. She was wearing what looked like an ancient and beat up Evangelion t-shirt that had the sleeves removed and had been tapered for her slender waist. She had a tall cup of coffee in one hand and her phone in the other. On the grass in front of her were four tortoises in shell cozies colored red, blue, orange and purple as well as a tupperware container they'd clearly been transported in. She waved briefly and lowered her over sized sunglasses to look at him with grey eyes. "You the interview guy or am I just waving like an idiot??"

He turned, spotted the woman, and stared a little, because -
Well. Turtles. Or whatever they were.
"Oh, uh," said Nathaniel, hastily recomposing himself and stepping forward. He extended a hand towards the woman, trying to smooth down the front of his vest without looking too obvious about the fact that he was doing it in the first place, Nathaniel smiling quickly.
"Yes, that's me. I'm Nathaniel Parrish."

"Wendy Drummond," She smiled, pretty in an angular way, but also easy to tell she worked to look like this. Everything about her look was curated. It wasn't forced, genuine in her love of the things she sported from her anime t-shirt to her full sleeved tattoos - comic panels containing her favorite fictional characters - but she had a level of 'instagram glamor' that regular people just didn't possess. " Nathaaaaniel-" She put on some sort of hoity accent and dragged it out, "It's long. How about Nathan? Nate? Nathan Drake is the hots..." She waggled her fingers at him around her phone as if being compared to a hot video game character would be the deciding factor. "You can sit down if you want.. bench, ground, grass-" She shrugged, "I'm cool. Just be careful of the ninjas." She meant the tortoises.

He committed the name Wendy Drummond to mind, Nathaniel's eyes flickering across her shirt and then to the tattoos, his expression politely curious, though he said nothing of it.
His mouth opened, then shut again. After a moment, Nathaniel said, "Uh...either of those is fine, really, I don't mind being called Nathan or Nate. Whichever is easiest for you."
Ninjas?
Nathaniel carefully picked his way over to the bench and sat down, legs together, hands twined and resting on his knees. "So...so, thank you for seeing me," he said, clearing his throat. "I'm glad to be able to meet with you, uh, today and all."

"No big, Nate." She was looking at her phone now, mouth twitching up at something she read while her thumb darted and slid deftly over the screen. "You know I work mornings early sooo-" She glanced up at him, "You know who I am right? I mean- you know what I do at the station?" And then a pause, "Do you listen to WWMI?"

There was a long pause while Nathaniel tried very, very hard not to look stupid. A dull red flush had started to wind its way across his cheeks, and he shifted a little uncomfortably, Nathaniel holding tightly to the bag he had slung over his shoulder.
"Um," he said, "Well. Y-yes. Yes, I do know what you do."
First rule of an interview: don't let them know you have no idea about the job. And Nathaniel was already failing that, apparently.
"I listen while I'm at school."
A sort of lie, sort of truth, but that was beside the point.
(No, it wasn't.)

"Relax-" She patted his knee because from here he seemed wound really tight. "It's an interview on a park bench. It's not all that." Wendy smiled, trying to be reassuring, "So like what kinda shi- stuff are you into?" Not exactly a normal line of work interview questioning.

Nathaniel offered her a weak sort of smile, trying to get his nerves in control. His eyes strayed towards the turtles again, which were still there, and still confusing.
"Uh," he said, because he had expected something else, like Why do you think you're qualified for this job? or What makes you think you're a good addition to our current staff? Not...his hobbies. Nathaniel twisted his hands together in his lap.
"Gardening, ma'am," he said, after a moment. "And reading. And um, writing, I guess. I also tutor on some weekdays."

"What do you read??" Wendy had dropped her phone, "Or write.. I write too. I mean besides for work. You do anything online?" The older woman perked, though she noticed the continual glancing to the tortoises in the grass. "You can touch them and hold them and stuff if you want. They aren't like running away or anything."

"Uh." His brain tried to work faster than her questions, which wasn't helping. "Mysteries mostly, ma'am, and fantasy. I like to read those the best. Not a real fan of contemporary things, but it depends."
Nathaniel shook his head. "Nothing online."
He wasn't going to mention his lack of a computer, eyes straying to the tortoises before looking back at Wendy again, a mixture of curiosity and wariness keeping him from actually making a decision on touching them.
"Do they have names?"

"Nice. I love that stuff. And comics, you read comics?" Wendy brushed hair behind her ear and she gave him a glance and smile, phone dinging in her hand which she turned back to again while sipping her coffee. "I barely get time to read anymore though. But audiobooks are bomb as fu-" She paused. "Audio books are pretty great," Yes good save. At the question of the turtles names, Wendy suddenly looked like the world had failed her. She looked at the sky, "My god. Kids. Presh babies." And she sighed. "Blue is Leonardo, Red is Raphael, Orange is Michelangelo, and Purple is the super genius Donatello." All said with a labored sigh. kuropeco kids these days and their lack of ninja turtles knowledge. this is affecting ur job prospects nathaniel.

"I do read comics, yes," Nathaniel said, with a flicker of a look at Wendy's phone before he dragged his gaze up again. "I've always been a Marvel fan especially."
He caught the slip and his lips tugged, though it faded again a second later, Nathaniel's expression shifting to a startled one. He didn't know what she was talking about, not until she rattled off the names of her turtles, and then a puzzle piece clicked into place.
"Oh," said Nathaniel, "Er. I've....only ever seen one episode of, uh...that show."
His tone was sheepish, wondering if this was a mortal offense somehow.

"Oh no-" Wendy gasped, "The new is really good, I mean not like the old show..." The young woman seemed to tut, but motioned to the turtles, "Go ahead they don't bite. Aren't they cute as hell? My boyfriend and I are working on a custom turtle sewer in the house for them to live in. Do you know any safe plants we could put indoors and keep for them?" Use the plant child, yes.
