The tree in the park play area in between the swing area and the long slide had at some point ended up as the default meeting point on the days where he met up with Kirra.
Briar still wasn't quite sure how it had ended up that way, but it hadn't stopped him from going with it, especially after he had found out that Kirra was a superhero like him.
It was just easier at the park he figured, given that they were in different classes at school and were meeting up at the park to do tree-climbing stuff anyway...
Well that and superhero stuff - although today he was being Briar rather than Oort.
Although it wasn't just the tree climbing stuff that had brough Briar out.
Today was the day that he was going to tell Kirra about the fact that he wasn't going to be going back to Knightside when school started back up after the holidays, that he was instead going be going off to High School.
It was something that he had kind of been putting off, but he had had to go try on his new school uniform over the weekend and it had drove home that the Summer holidays were coming to an end and he still hadn't told her...
And whilst they didn't really see each other that much at school outside of the occasional glimpses in the school playground, Kirra was both tree-climbing buddy and a fellow superhero and so Briar felt that he should tell her and do so before school started back up.LokisRose Sorry this took me so long Loki and hope this works for the promised start. As always lmk if anything needs tweaking and I will try to think up a better title at some point :3

Kirra raced across the playground, bag of books and snacks bouncing against her back as she headed for the Secret Meeting Tree. She hadn't told Briar that was what she called it, but it totally was. Because she was a superhero, and so was Briar. It was their secret. So they had a Secret Tree. Kirra was still a little hazy on the details of senshi-dom. Her early bedtime didn't give her much chance to try out her powers. But if there were monsters, she and Briar would take them on, like Spiderman! Except, they wouldn't have much time for superheroing, she realised, because school was going back soon. It was so weird, starting a new school year when it was still the old year! It was the middle of the old year, even! But despite that, Kirra was excited to go back to Knightside. All her friends would be there, and her after-school drama class would start. School was fun. But right now, it was still Holidays, and the sun was shining, and that meant it was a perfect day to go meet Briar and see just how high they could climb up the big old trees at the park. He was already there! She raised a hand in greeting, speeding up to jog the rest of the distance, jumping over the playground boundary. "Hiii! Sooorry I'm late!" she called with a vigorous wave as she got close. "I had to go pick up my next-year schoolbooks, and they are sooo heavy! But I got new pens, wanna see?" She dumped her backpack at her feet, smiling brightly up at the taller boy. He sure was getting super-tall now, she had so much catching up to do. litian It's perfect! I'm just slow. <3

It seemed like today would be one of the quiet days in the park - well at least Briar was assuming so given that in the 10 minutes or so that he'd been there, he hadn't seen many people...
In fact he hadn't actually seen anyone apart from the old-looking mister out walking the dog and the couple out with a push chair - which was fine by him since he liked it when the park was quiet like this.
A loud and cheerful voice calling his name broke into his thoughts, reddish eyes glancing in its direction also automatically and then he waved his left hand in a return greeting as the source of the voice - a blue-haired girl with blonde and red tips - approached the tree.
"Hey Kirra" he called as he returned her bright smile with a small smile of his own. "And it's okay - I haven't been waiting long."

Kirra blew out a drama-sigh of relief, her grin widening. Even a very small smile from Briar meant a lot to her. "Okay, good! 'Cos I don't wanna make you wait!" she told him earnestly. Next time, she thought, she would run even faster so they could spend the *most* time climbing. With Summer running out, they weren’t going to have as much time soon. Kirra glanced around at the park and playground she’d become so familiar with over the holidays. It was pretty quiet. Too quiet. Maybe all the other kids were out with their parents, she guessed, doing school things. She and Briar had pretty much the whole park for just them. "What'cha been up to?” she asked, tilting her head back to look up at him. “And which tree are we gonna go in today?"

"I thought we could climb that big tree over by the fountain" Briar said as he reached down briefly to grab his own backpack and absently slung it so that it hung on one shoulder.
"It's got a pretty good view of the park" and it was nice enough to read in, although it wasn't his preferred reading tree. "Mum gave me cookies. They're not as good as the chocolate chip one but you can have some if you want."
He crossed the small distance between them as he added "And I haven't been doing much - just preparing for school stuff."
He hesitated for a moment before adding because it was probably best that he just got it over with "I.. I'm not going to be going to Knightside anymore because I have to go to High School when school starts again."

Kirra turned to survey the park, raising her hand against the sun as she squinted in the direction of the fountain. She knew the tree he was talking about. It had some high branches, but they’d be able to see everything from up there! She nodded her agreement, shouldering her own bag again. Her grin widened further at the thought of cookies. Her mum had only given her some apple slices and little jelly fruit cups. (Jello, because jelly was jam now, she reminded herself. American words still tripped her up when they were almost like the ones she knew.) The fruit cups were pretty nice, but they weren’t as good as cookies, even plain ones. “Your mum is the best!” But Briar didn’t seem as happy about cookies and climbing as she thought he ought to be. His worry made her worried. “High School?” she repeated, and the word was as foreign to her as ‘jello’. Briar was really tall, one of the big kids, but surely not that big. Not yet! Her smile melted away in the sunshine, leaving her lower lip wobbling. “But I won’t see you anymore!”

Briar wasn't sure that he agreed with Kirra's comment about his Mum being the best because even though he was 13 she was still kind of fussy.
Although he guessed that being fussy was kind of a 'Mum' thing since his Mum had always been kind of fussy.
Having cookies were kind of neat, even if they weren't of the chocolate chip variety.
He nodded as Kirra repeated the word High School and then added awkwardly at her not seeing him comment "And no, not at school you won't."
And then he looked at her face and wished he hadn't because her smile was gone and her lip was wobbling in a way that made him worried that she was going to start crying.
"But we didn't really see each other much at school anyway" because the odd wave in the playground didn't really count.
He shoved his hands in his pockets and scuffed his shoes in the dirt as he continued awkwardly "But even though we won't see each other at school anymore that doesn't mean that we have stop seeing each other - after all we're still tree climbing buddies right?"
And then quieter since even though the park was quiet, he had seen the odd person around "And we're superhero partners too."
And there was the pool too given that they both liked swimming and so sometimes bumped into each other there.LokisRose Briar is awkwardly hoping that there won't be any tears

Kirra turned her eyes to the footpath, biting her lip. Briar really was going to go to a different school. It was just like when she’d had to move here and leave all her old friends behind in Australia. He’d be far away and she wouldn’t see him anymore and he’d make all new friends and he’d forget all about her… Though he did kind of have a point, because they didn’t ever play together at school, or even eat lunch together. They both had friends in their grade for that. “Well, yeah,” she conceded reluctantly, “but I knew you were there!” And now he wouldn’t be, she thought sadly. She wouldn’t see him around just normally, wouldn’t be able wave to him and say hi, and have him wave back. Of course she had other friends, but they weren't Briar! She wished she was older too, it was like a hundred years before she could go to High School. All the things they couldn’t do anymore filled up her head, even as Briar kept talking, until he burst it like a worry-bubble with what they could still do. “Of course we’re still tree-climbing buddies!” There was no way in the universe she was giving that up! She nodded seriously at his softer words. Another very good point. Obviously they still had to fight monsters together. They had a secret. They would still be friends. “Okay,” she said, taking a deep breath with minimal snuffling. “But do you promise? Do you super-really for real promise?”

A part of Briar felt relieved when it stopped looking like tears were about to be forthcoming...
At least he was taking the fact that Kirra's lip had stopped wobbling as a sign that she wasn't about to start crying - because crying meant awkwardness..
Well at least more awkwardness - because this was kind of awkward and it was an awkward that was his fault - but it was kind of better than crying awkward...
Because Briar didn't know how to deal with tears.
He nodded when Kirra asked him if he promised, a part of him still feeling relieved when she agreed so readily that they were still tree climbing buddies, although Briar did his best not to show it because he wasn't a kid.
"Yes I promise" he said seriously and then to show just how serious he was he held out the little finger on his left hand.
"And I'll pinky promise too."
It wasn't something that he would generally do - because pinky promises were kind of a kid thing and he was thirteen and not a kid...
But even he knew that pinky promises were serious - because everyone knew that.

Kirra nodded too. Briar sounded really serious, not like other kids that ‘promised’ then forgot, and he never lied. The last hint of tears were blinked away as she gazed wide-eyed at Briar’s extended little finger. She didn’t know big kids knew how to pinky-swear. They weren’t so far apart after all. She hooked her own pinky-finger through his. “Friends forever?” she said, a little shyly. She knew that was probably pushing it, because after all Briar was much older than her, and probably had loads of Best Friends already. Tree buddies or super-partners would be okay - but she figured if they were going to pinky-promise, they should make it for something important. litian Sorry for slow. (She's such a brat...)

Briar wasn't sure what he'd said to prompt the sudden wide eyed look on Kirra's face, but it wasn't doing anything to help the awkwardness he was feeling.
He shifted his feet slightly as he continued to hold out his little finger as a part of him wondered if he should drop it...
And then Kirra was linking her little finger through his.
"Friends forever" he agreed, his voice a little gruff as he gave their interlinked fingers a little shake - because when it came down to it Briar did consider Kirra a friend.LokisRose Apologies once again for the delay - should we fin this one on your tag?

A joyous smile spread across Kirra’s face as Briar pinky-swore, without hesitation or dispute of terms. She should never have doubted him! He really was the best Best Friend, and now they would be friends forever and ever, even if he had to go super-far away or anything. Even if she had to go all the way back to Australia. She hoped she wouldn’t have to, it was scary going away from the people she knew, making all new friends. For the first time, Kirra wondered if Briar was scared about going to a new school too. He was the one having to leave his old friends behind. But he wouldn’t have to worry about that now, because she’d never let him get lonely. With a last tug on their linked fingers for emphasis, Kirra reluctantly let her pinky finger drop away from his, nodding decisively. Promise made, it was time to stop worrying about the future, and live in the gloriously sunny now. “Okay. But you don’t have to go to High School yet, right? So let’s climb!” litian I'm happy with that. Fin?
