Running. Gotta keep running! There was no way to fly! She couldn’t even if she wanted to. Patches of feathers were missing from her once beautiful wings. If one were to come across the mare as she were now, they would think she was actually a lavender pelt. Beautiful light blue hair now had rusty dirty purple spots where it had brushed against her wounds and pulled at the forming scabs only to reopen it. Golden charms woven through now were brown in muck and dirt. Only in these unfamiliar lands did she slow down from a run into a lumbering walk.

Cuts ran along her legs, and sides from branches and brambles and.. inflicted wounds. Her wavy mane was plastered to her back from her own blood and sweat and a few tears. By the time that the equine had reached these lands she was shaking with exhaustion, dehydration and no longer contained enough water to cry. This didn’t stop the ache of her heart. Fear propelled her hooves forward despite her own exhaustion until finally she reached her limit. Her mind was foggy, and hazy. She had no clue how she even made it this far, how she had survived Mercy. Everything became a blur after the Game began and she realized that her newest acquaintance was no friend.

The sound of her own panting had drowned out all other sounds around her. She was deafened to the world, and the edges of her vision were outlining in a black. This was it. This was all she had. She gave it all she possibly could. If Mercy found her now, there would be nothing left in her to fight for her life or more importantly to her, those wings. Her head dropped to hang as she slowed her pace down to a stumble. Finally she found a tree that seemed to provide a bit of shadow. It was so little it would not hide her form but Kuwanyauma could not see that in her current state. All she saw was a darkness to rest and she allowed her body to collapse in its safety. She dare not make an utterance despite the pain that racked through her for her voice had nothing left. She had worn down and given everything she had to play the Game. No longer did she care what happened because all she had left was her life.

In her state, smelling of blood, dirt, and fear, Ku’s eyes fell shut. There was a silent prayer offered in her rest that no more Games be played nor any shadow ponies come find her. Kuwanyauma had enough of strangers. She was a broken mare and couldn’t bare to let anyone see her in such a state.

When not needed by her family herd or the friends she had made throughout the land, it was Eteri Voska's singular pleasure to wander alone among the trees. She wove her way in and out of stooping trunks and dappled light, reveling in the play of sun or moonlight over her silken bay coat. In the sun her mane was a river of gold, though moonlight tended to wash it into shades of silvery-wheat. Still too bright to sneak up on her brother unless conditions were optimum, but not much of an issue in the day.

It was just, noteworthy, really. And if her father was to believed, being noteworthy was something to avoid. Things went better if one was average or unseen, unremarkable. Predators looked at flashy things or delicious things, collectors looked for interesting or pretty things. Better to be none of those, and to live a long and happy life without being noticed by such things. But today was not a day for worrying about such things, the birds were singing and the squirrels were out and about. Clearly there weren't any hunters about at the moment, she was safe.

Well, safe enough to feel curious when she saw a peculiar shape sleeping beneath a lone oak. There were shades of sky and flower and pain, a heap of bewildering colors and dirt that spoke of poor treatment. A stillness that spoke of exhaustion, but the faintest movement that meant whoever or whatever it was was still alive. Alive meant someone she could help, or someone she had to try to help... Which meant getting closer.

'Daddy isn't going to be happy about this, not at all.' She thought to herself, hesitating for a moment before taking gentle steps toward the collapsed stranger. 'But, best to see what we're looking at before I go worry about that... I might need some help, when all is said and done.'

The mare seemed to be in terrible shape, clearly a refugee from a horrendous ordeal. She wasn’t dead, but she had the look of someone starved and beaten and hunted to exhaustion. A victim of a herd war? Or something more sinister like Kalona or Skinwalker? Would they be tracking her, hunting her? Would they follow her here?

"No way to know unless you wake her up and ask." Voska muttered to herself. There was a source of clean water in the next meadow, and getting some moss meant she could soak up the water and hopefully wake the mare up… Or at least clean her off while waiting for her to wake.

“Ok, ok.” Voska murmured, spinning on her heels to trot to the meadow and seize the moss. “Soak up some water, try to splash her awake… If that doesn’t work, look for some wounds to determine the extent of her injury… And we go from there.”

Satisfied with the plan, the bay mare seized the soaked greenery and carried it back to drip gently over the mare’s face. Her words, though muffled, were softly hopeful. “Wake up, hmm?”

Even as the darkness overcame the mare, and slumber took her hostage there was still no escape. Everything was happening all over again. The mocking laughter, the flash of teeth, all that blood and violence. How desperately she had tried to run but he was a clever predator having cornered her into a thick wooded area. While he had the strength to barrel through, she was left to weave in and out of trees, slowing her down a great deal. Why? Why did it have to be this way? What could drive a Soq to become so cruel? Surely he was not born this way!

Her confusion didn’t save her the physical pain the few times he had captured her. The feathers he ripped out were the worst of the attack for Kuwanyauma. She didn’t care as much when he crashed into her side, leaving a cut. Even as his horns desperately sought to gouge her eyes, missing by seconds thanks to the toss of her head, it didn’t hurt her nearly as badly as the feathers. She rather have the cuts by her eyes than have anyone touch her wings let alone damage them. A quiet tear slipped down her cheek as she slept, body trembling. What if she couldn’t fly ever again? The horror and nightmare might become a reality. To be grounded for life was a fate worse than death. He had not broken her wings, or pulled them off no matter how desperately he had tried; she had managed that much. The trophies he stole from her were major feathers for flight. She only realized this when she had managed to lose the skin walker. Kuwanyauma had tried to take to the skies, only to be stuck running the rest of the way. Mercy had made sure to keep that a challenge as his horns had slashed at her legs during her escape from the woods.

Only at the touch of several droplets and jerks of her skin did Kuwanyauma feel herself pulled out from the darkness. She refused to open her eyes but frowned a bit. Was that his drool? Had he come to finish her off? Maybe it was better this way… until she heard an unfamiliar voice. Ears flicked in the direction of the sound and slowly those golden eyes opened to gaze at the source. It was an unfamiliar face and such a sight was enough to fill her with dread. Who was this one? Would they hurt her too? Why did they wish her awake? Did they know? Oh no! This poor thing couldn’t possibly know of the lurking shadows that had driven her to this place. Such worry pushed her beyond her worry of strangers. A raspy voice, clearly used up from the screams of hours before, rose from the injured mare, “You should run from here. He might appear any moment. I don’t want to see you hurt.” Stranger or not, it could not change who she was. All her fear was no match for the consideration the mare held within her. Her voice drew into a trembling plea, “Please run.” The thought that she might put another in danger meant a fate far worse than losing her wings. While Kuwanyauma had lost him temporarily, she was scared he would track her scent and find a new prey to feast upon. Kuwanyauma was in no state to protect anyone, not even herself, but the least she could do is warn this poor soul.

“Got yourself in quite a bind, if you don’t mind my saying so.” The bay mare mumbled to herself and her still-unconscious patient. “Not the worst I’ve seen, but that’s not saying much since I can’t really tell where you’re injured under all that dirt.”

Casting an appraising eye over the mare again, she considered the damage to the strangely mixed wings. Part feather and part gossamer membrane, it looked like the feathers had been cruelly ripped out or broken, but the fluttery panels of mist white appeared untorn. A good thing too, Eteri had no experience or even knowledge as to if it was possible to repair a flutter’s wings if torn. It was handy she had two flutter friends, one of which was also a healer. Maybe Amacha Nigella would be a valuable soul to consult, the flutter-corn mare might know how best to help her damaged kin.

Waiting for the mare to awaken, Voska bowed her head and dabbed gently at the mare’s face with the damp moss. It helped to wash some of the grime from her coat, and would hopefully make her feel better as well. ‘Maybe I can convince her to walk to the stream properly, a good soak might help wash out her wounds and clean her coat… Not that any of these ‘maybes’ will help if she doesn’t wake up…’

Seeing a tear escape and drip down the unconscious stranger’s face, Eteri Voska made a soft sound of worry. It seemed like she was having a nightmare, poor thing. Patting gently at the mare’s face again with the damp moss, Voska did her best to make a soothing sound and then set the moss aside, tapping the mare gently with her horn and sending a light healing pulse through her patient. “Come on now, wake up my dear, and tell me what I’m working with hmm?”

Seeing eyes flutter open, Voska leaned back a bit to help the mare focus on her, and gave a gentle smile. Her mismatched eyes glinted bright and kind, her voice soft and soothing. “Well, there you are. I was beginning to think you’d never awaken, and that would hardly have helped either of us in this situation. Healing is much easier when I know precisely what the problem is.”

Shifting faintly on her pale blue hooves, Voska glanced around the glade and cocked a keen ear for the sounds of pursuit. There was no hint of a predator crashing through the woods, the soft sound of birds and small creatures rustled through the undergrowth. If a hunter was among them they surely would have quieted, which meant that she and her patient were safe for a time. “As for running, it really isn’t quite my style. And he, whomever he is, better not even try. I’m tougher than I look, and I have friends and family besides. How about we see if we can get you up and to the stream in the next glade? Water will certainly make you feel better, and help you to hide your trail. A drink and a bath and you telling me what’s going on, then we’ll make a plan for how to proceed.”

Most would assume that sleep would bring some sort of rest or comfort from her horrendous ordeal that she had just escaped from. In her slumbers there was nothing but her broken mind, and visions of horrific torments that replayed and flashed as if it were happening all over again. One would call them nightmares but really it was nothing more than memories of the most recent past. How foolish she had been to believe that all soquili had the same intention. Kuwanyauma truly thought that all soquili just needed a friend or a chance to be one. Not only had this proven to not be the case, Ku was dead wrong. His laughter echoed in the shadows, the sound of those charging footsteps roaring everywhere, and the flash of his fangs glittering from his drool were all around the mare. After these visions, pain from feathers torn from her hybrid wings followed. Desperately she fought to free herself, only to have cuts from the horns. Desperation was her only language through everything. All of these things became rooted deep into her memories. Forever would the word 'Mercy' mean anything but its original intent. All these things screamed into the darkness of her slumber, shaking her to her core.

Just as loudly as the memories howled and seared, in an instance they were calmed. No longer did her heart tremble and quake in sheer terror at the tap of the horn unknown to the blue mare. She was blue under all the dirt even if it wasn't completely apparent at the moment. After she awoke, and gave her warning, Kuwanyauma let the silence of the surrounding area full upon her. Such a still beyond the the two souls here gave her assurance that running may not be a requirement of the moment. It was in this strange acquirement of peace that she took a breath and scanned over her newest acquaintance.

This mare seemed kind. However, there was a small pang within Ku. She thought the other soul appeared kind as well. If it had not been for the healing touch she was gifted when she was sleeping, tears would be spilled from sheer panic. However, her heart merely ached and an expression of forlorn weighed over her face. A moment passed where Kuwanyauma weighed her options as she slowly rose to her hooves. She could try to run again but already her muscles ached and screamed just from rising. After realizing how she couldn't fight or struggle any further, the blue mare gave a soft sigh and stared at the ground. "I can't.. run or move much further than the glade." Her voice may have been hoarse from screaming before but the sad tone wasn't masked by the coarse sound.

Her golden eyes that held the soul of a damaged innocent remained focused on the ground as she tried to recapture a piece of herself, even if she was a little torn and worse for wear. "My name is Kuwanyauma but please feel free to call me Ku." She was determined to reclaim something that was her old self, or her old life before meeting her very first skinwalker. Mercy may have taken her sound sleep, broken her trust in soquili, and harmed her body but she would never let him have her soul. Ku was stubborn to try and have something that he couldn't take from her.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Though the mare had collapsed –clearly from exhaustion, though her injuries were possibly also to blame- her sleep did not seem peaceful. Tossing her golden forelock out of her eyes, Eteri Voska frowned down at the mare as she seemed to thrash and shudder in her sleep. Clearly her dreams were more like nightmares, shadows haunting her even after she had lost the energy to continue running. Never mind that she’d probably gotten herself so turned around she didn’t know where she was or how to find home.

‘If home is even an option? Who rightly knows? Could have been a stallion that did this to her, or an abusive herd… But if there is such a one, they’re not something I’ve heard of, and I wouldn’t really know who to begin asking.’

“Poor Lostling.” Voska murmured, gentle sympathy in her tone. “I’m not entirely sure where you’ve been or who was there with you, but you appear to have gone through hell while you were there. Still, you’re free of it now… and if it decides to chase you, it’ll have to handle more than it has bargained for. Trust that.”

Wishing she had friends among the songbirds to send word to Amacha, the bay mare stepped gently around her charge and tried to offer support or a firm shoulder to encourage the mare to stand. “We’re not really running anywhere. Still, I think you’d feel better if you’d lean on me and we shuffled you over to the stream. Like I said, a bath and a drink and we’ll see what we’re working with. I’ve got friends that are healers too, if I can’t patch you up on my own. But let’s take things one at a time.”

She inclined her head slightly as the mare introduced herself. “Kuwanyauma, hmm? Well Ku, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Eteri Voska, though you can call me Eteri if you like. A bit shorter, for the both of us. There now, we’re practically friends! So, how about you lean on me, and we walk to the stream to get you cleaned up. There should be some soap root growing on the banks, so we can wash your coat and see where you’re injured. I can’t help you grow the feathers back; that will take time more than anything else… But the injuries we can handle, and with food and water and rest your exhaustion should fade.”

Glancing toward the tree line and then over their shoulders, Eteri settled slightly when she noticed the wildlife around them continued with their usual chatter. There were birds and squirrels in the trees, and it sounded like rabbits out in the shadows of the woods, in search of clover or sweet grass perhaps. If anything big or bad decided to chase Ku, the animals would let them know. But for now, it sounded quiet and safe.

“A drink and a bath and rest, and I’ll see about finding you something to eat. You should feel much better then, hmm?”
