Growling as she darted after the silvery freshling, Zahneel was only thankful that she'd gotten his scent prior to the release of smelly pollen everywhere. And if she hadn't caught that scent, she would have deduced that this was Meimu based on his behavior combined with how Tomoe had acted when mentioning him.
Little brat, she thought. Why he wanted to be stuck in a forest after dark was beyond her. Still growling, she stopped suddenly and sneezed at the foul smell that lingered on her.

Still sneezing, Zahneel skid to a halt in order to examine the ground. Yes, there was a faint footprint. Unfortunately, that did her little good when her nose was still full of pollen. With a snarl, she lashed out at a tree trunk with her claws.
The problem was the Meimu knew this forest and she didn't. And despite his youth, he was obviously clever. So, how to outsmart him. Would herding work? Thinking hard, she thought it might. Make enough noise, be relentless enough and maybe it would get the kids to move in to closer to where Claire and Tomoe waited...

Taking the time to consider the idea that the kids could be hidden and watching her to see what she'd do next, Zahneel made sure that she was obvious about the branches and bits or ground cover she was gathering up. Let them think she was setting a trap or two. They'd get bored and then she'd rig up what she'd gathered for maximum noise. It wasn't the greatest plan, but until her poor, abused nose cleared, it was the best she could do since she didn't fancy running pell mell through an unfamiliar forest in the dark.

Humming softly as she worked Zahneel set up a couple of harmless pit traps. Not so deep that the fall would hurt, but deep enough (hopefully) to prevent a couple of kids from climbing out easily. Once they were camoflaged and she'd marked the area in her mind, she turned her attention to the two hefty branches she'd set aside.
Picking one up in each hand, she grinned as she swung them carefully while she walked. As she knocked them against bushes and tree trunks, they made a lovely, loud noise that sounded like more than one searcher.
"All right, kids," she muttered. "Let's see how long you can keep this ridiculous chase up."

Moving carefully through the darkened forest, Zahneel kept her ears perked for any sound of movement ahead and her eyes to the ground. Here and there, she caught sight of a footprint, but not often enough for her liking. It was a good bet the kids were making sure to avoid the dirt and mud as they ran about. One of them had been smart enough to take out her sense of smell, after all!
Though... she was slowly starting to pick up scents that were not gross pollen. Give it a bit more time and she'd be able to properly track again. Privately, she rather thought that she'd like to catch up to Meimu and be allowed to administer a proper spanking for all the trouble he'd taken part in.

Okay, the air really was starting to smell much cleaner the further she got from where Meimu had played his little trick. That was good. Pausing beside a set of footprints in the loam, she knelt and sniffed deeply before grimacing. The scents were still muddied by that pollen, not to mention the two had clearly mingled together at some point, making it almost impossible to sort one child from the other.
Audibly grinding her teeth, Zahneel checked all around, noting that she was able to see a faint green glow from the rescue lantern. Maybe she should head back and see if anyone had had better luck in tracking the kids. Except that would be giving up and she hated the thought. No, she'd keep hunting.

'C'mon kids," Zahneel had decided to try coaxing. Maybe if they thought she was friendly, they wouldn't run? It was worth a shot anyway. "It's really not very nice of you to be doing this!"
What she wanted to tell them was that they were being awful little brats. Had she acted this way at their age? She didn't think so. She'd abandoned one of her branches and was now using the other to test the path ahead just in case either had left any unpleasant surprises for her. Still calling out and pausing to test the air, she continued deeper into the trees.

A soft rustling alerted Zahneel that she might not be alone. Cocking her head slightly, ears twitching, she decided that it sounded about kid sized. Twirling the branch she held until it was held more like a walking stick, She glared out into the darkness behind the beam of her flashlight.
"That you, kids?" she asked softly, her voice sounding cheerfully friendly. "Come on, people are worried about you."
Without trying to be too obvious about it, her nose was twitching as well as her ears, trying to separate and identify the scents in the cool air. Still muddied, but as long as no one threw anymore gross stuff at her...

People were worried? Was this supposed to make Meimu any more willing to go with a complete stranger he didn't even know what to call? Oh, no. She was dead wrong there.
Naoki might be dumb enough to fall for candy or something but he was not about to go willingly with any of these weirdos. It was just his luck that he'd gotten to a stream before the dog-girl caught up with him. He'd been quite happy to be undisturbed with his playthings but ohhhh no. She just had to get too close.
Meimu stepped out of the underbrush just long enough to hurl a massive frog at Zahneel, then turned and darted back down to the bank, careful to leap over the shallow waters before continuing into the bushes on the other side.
[Your character is not injured by the frog....... the frog might be injured by the collision with your character, though. :C]
