This enemy can be fought solo!

A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung

Hit points: 25
Damage: 5 each time attacked

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Beth had told herself that she would never set foot outside the lodge for the purpose of killing birds. She wasn't trained, she had no interest, she wasn't the right person. But she felt inspired by the example of her fellow Chosen. She bundled up, put her game face on, and forged her way out into the snow before her common sense could beg her to return to the safety of the lodge.

She did her best to stay hidden, searching the skies for a single bird she could whet her blade on. Or whip, as it were.

Finally she found what she was looking for. Finally, she struck.

Beth did not let out a war cry so much as a frightened gasp, but it worked well enough. At least she hit the damn thing. But the retaliation was not quite worth the solid bop she managed to land. At least scratches were better than getting dung in her hair.

"It's all in the wrist," she muttered to herself. She had no idea of it were true--she hasn't exactly gone to whip cracking class--but it seemed like an accurate enough statement to put her trust in. She flicked her whip out at it again--it screeched, not liking her attack, and flew at her, clipping her in her left arm with its wings.

No, she decided, this is definitely not worth it. ' Why did I think I wouldn't sweat because it's cold out?' She asked herself ruefully. She tried aiming for its leg, thinking to pull it from the sky, but it had about the same effect as trying to bare hand slap fight it. Its claws really liked her face.

Beth had barely recovered from the last attack when the bird lashed out again with its wings before launching back into the air. Desperately, Beth struck out with her weapon--and watched as the tip looped around the bird's neck a few times. Instinctively, she pulled with all her might and the bird plummeted to the ground. There was a moment where bird and girl stared at each other in shocked disorientation. Then Beth let out a victorious squeal. That hit may not have killed it, but it certainly seemed like it hurt.

The pit fall of using her weapon to down the enemy soon became clear. There was no easy way to disentangle it from the bird's neck ruff. She wasn't about to approach it and ask it nicely to please wait while she got her annoying little string free. It took her a couple of attempts but she wrenched it free, the rope scoring rings into its neck as she did so. The bird showed her its displeasure by swooping down and returning the favor--three deep marks that went right through her pant leg.

Beth's next move could not recapture the competence of her previous attack. She desperately flailed the whip about her head. Any connection must have been sheer dumb luck. The bird, sensing her injury no doubt, targeted her wounded leg again, causing her to cry out in fear.

Beth grit her teeth, telling herself that there was no way she was going to fall. She had to beat this bird! Even though she wasn't the strongest, or the fastest, or even the most physically capable Chosen, she was good enough to beat one single bird. She couldn't be any less. She flicked her whip out, aiming for the eye again.

She hit. The bird retaliated.

With a scream that sounded from deep within her, a roar that she had never thought herself capable of, Beth threw her arm out to strike. The bird savaged it in response, but the end result was the same: it feel to the ground twitching before it finally stopped moving and the snow began settling over it.

Bird: DEAD.
Beth: NOT DEAD. 7/47

Beth sat heavily on the snow, knowing she ought to get up and search for something useful in the corpse. She'd heard of feathers and blood and (ick) dung samples being recovered that gave awesome benefits, but the idea of pawing around in the dead bird was a little much for her to stomach. After another moment's rest, she pushed herself up and started limping towards the lodge. The scariest part was that she knew she ought to be feeling more...victorious, pained, electrified, glorious, but she just felt tired and in need of a hot bath.

+10 xp and rolling for loot!
