Zahneel had caught the name of the other child and also committed it to memory. Then, listening to Claire, she'd hefted her flashlight, made note of the rescue lantern and headed off, Tomoe's words about water magic ringing in her ears. Since she didn't have water magic, she figured she was safe enough.
Moving off into the forest, she crouched low and carefully scented the air, moving with deliberate caution. It was really too bad that it was already so dark, but with the flashlight, she could still search for footprints or broken twigs. Anything that might mark where a kid had passed through.
For a moment, the grimm paused and stretched out. Then, with a tiny frown crinkling her forehead, she flicked the flashlight on and began hunting.

Moving deeper into the forest, Zahneel thought she heard something moving nearby, but dismissed the noise after listening hard. Whatever it was had been too high up and too light sounding to be a pair of kids. It had also occured to her just how stupid she'd been to head off on her own. Eliza would be furious if she ever found out. Therefore, Zahneel reasoned, she wouldn't find out. At least, not for a long time.
Shaking herself out of her momentary reverie, she bent low once more and examined the ground around a tree. Then, just for good measure, she straightened up and looked back, reassured by the faint green glow of the rescue lantern.

Moving slowly, Zahneel had still managed to trip over at least three hidden tree roots and one rock. She took a moment to sit at the base of one of the trees and rub her poor toes. While she was resting, she took a second to think about where she would hide if it was her running around in here. Behind any of the big trees, for sure. Maybe in a clump of bushes.
Shaking her head irritably, Zahneel gingerly tested her foot and decided that nothing was hurt. Therefore, it was time to continue hunting and hoping that she'd pick up the scent sooner rather than later.

Crouching low, Zahneel thought she'd picked up a whisper of a scent. Going completely still, she closed her eyes and concentrated on it. Yes, it was there and it was similar to Tomoe's scent, but it wasn't Tomoe.
Eyes snapping open, she decided it was worth the risk of calling out and hoping she'd managed to find one of the kids.
"Naoki? Meimu? Is that you? Come on out, don't be afraid!"
Though, judging from what Tomoe had had to say about these two, very little seemed to frighten them.

Being a clever child, Meimu had figured out the method Zahneel was most likely using to tail him... and so when he appeared suddenly out of the darkness, it was with a particularly smelly plant...
The small Freshling squeezed it in Zahneel's direction, expelling a cloud of noxious pollen, and then dashed back into the darkness.
