This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested!

A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung.

Hit points: 60
Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked.

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Tara had spent a while in the hotel after the last match against the damn birds. The one where she'd been damn lucky to have Rob there to help her. Otherwise she felt it was easy to believe she'd have had to run with her tail tucked between her legs from the damn metallic birds.

With renewed hope she'd be able to hold her own well enough against them this time, she was back outside, bow strung and an arrow already in place, eyes scanning the skies for incoming opponents. The ground was littered with bird bodies, the snow trampled nearly flat, and stained with blood, dung, and who knew what else at this point.

A whistling sound caught her attention and she turned quick, just in time for a metal feather to slice open her sleeve and nick her arm. A trio of birds were coming her way, and Tara grit her teeth. Lovely. Raising her weapon, she closed an eye and took aim for one. The arrow flew fast, gouging one in the side and making the bird screech. Score for her, at least.

Zebulon was, in general, avoiding the outdoors.

It wasn't that he didn't want to save people, necessarily, or that he didn't really want to help with the birds (although to be honest, he was fine with not helping with them) but he thought he would be much more useful away from ... that. He was a chemist. He would probably be more useful trying to find supplies indoors that he could mix into things to destroy these birds with.

Like bleach.

Still, he couldn't really stay inside forever, and so he squared his shoulders and went outside warily. Of course there were still a bunch of birds circling around, though a couple in particular seemed to be swarming nearby near another Chosen with a bow and arrow--

Dammit.

Zebulon jogged over to help out, swinging out his shield when he got there in an attempt to smack one of the birds out of the way. The odd clang sound that the bird made when he touched it with his shield made him suddenly aware of something he hadn't noticed before.

"They're metal?!"

Going outside had not been the plan. Staying at the door, picking off birds with her bow had been. It was safe there, with lots of cover and lots of back up, and any time she got tired or just didn't want to do it any more, she could leave and someone would take her place.

But then her eyes had caught a smaller group of birds breaking off from the main flock and she had watched with growing concern as they had mobbed a pair of chosen out in the snow. Out where there was no sensible, safe cover to hide behind, and no reinforcements.

Damn it, Rob. She could already hear his voice in her ear, telling her it was their duty to help out their fellows.

She was out from her safe hole before she knew what she was rightly doing, pelting across the empty space to join the pair who had broken off. She notched an arrow as she went, and managed to get it off, but a spray of metal feathers sent her way threw off her aim and it flew wide and ********..." She growled as she reached for another, stomping to a halt beside the two and spinning to put her back safely to them rather than to the birds.

"Might be a good idea to face outwards, ducklings. Nothing is gonna get us from behind that way." She said as she drew her string back and took aim.

It still surprised her to see people using the shields--though she wasn't sure why she was surprised by it. If anything, they seemed to be immensely effective, for both offensive and defensive reasons. The clang of metal against metal rattled her brain a bit, and when the man holding the shield gave a startled commentary--Tara laughed a bit.

"Yep! Bronze beaks and talons, metal feathers. Burning, maybe poisonous dung... and weird blood. That's what we've been up against." Tara might have shot the guy a curious look, wondering where he'd been to not know this yet, but with all that had been going on around the hotel, she wouldn't have been shocked to hear if he'd just been busy helping out inside. Or just... wasn't a combative sort.

Pulling back on the string of her bow, Tara picked another target and loosed the arrow. Again she managed to strike a bird, knocking off a chunk of metal feathers and clearly pissing off the bird. Though she gagged as the thing flung some of the dung at her, splattering it on her lower leg. "Use snow to get it off when that happens," she tossed to the guy with the shield, quickly bending down to do just that, before straightening again and shaking her leg a little to hopefully shake off anything she'd missed.

A flash of extremely bright hair caught her attention, and Tara blinked a bit at the other girl who joined them, whom was also an archer, she noted with delight. Ducklings? Still, Tara somewhat positioned herself so her back was to the others then, even if she kept a little distance to avoid hitting anyone when she'd pull back on her bow. "Just watch out they don't hit us from above!"

"The s**t?"

Zebulon squinted at the birds in front of him, as if that would tell him more. But he wasn't exactly a natural scientist, and these things weren't natural, anyway. All he saw in front of him was metal feathers and bronze beaks and -- well, he supposed Athena was right about gaining more knowledge.

"We're fighting mechanical poison s**t birds. Nice."

His gaze shifted as someone with extremely colourful hair ran up to them and called them ducklings. "Ducklings? You trying to draw all the ducklings towards you with that hair?" Of course, not paying attention to the actual enemies and instead her hair resulted in him getting a metal feather across the arm.

He tried to swat at the bird with the shield, but it long swooped away before he could get a shot at it.

A bright, bubbly laugh broke from Sid at the ‘mechanical poison s**t birds’ comment. It was accurate, she had to give him that. Neither of these two were ones she had met before, or seen at any of the group things she had dragged herself to attend.

“Its weird how they don’t make any noise, but I’m just glad they aren’t real birds.” She said as she aimed for a bird diving at them and released, the arrow flying in a smooth arc to puncture through the flapping wing with a ping of metal on metal. It swerved, thrown off course, and broke away to circle back around, giving Sid a decidedly self-satisfied grin.

She turned that grin to the man beside her, her dark eyes bright with mirth.

“Of course, G-man! Isn’t it working?” She laughed, reaching down to the quiver strapped to her hip. She notched the new arrow onto the string, catching the glint of flung feathers just in time to throw up an arm to protect her face as they pelted down around her. The small cuts stung, but no more than she could stand. She’d had worse, after all.

“I wonder if I could blind them by standing in direct sunlight.” She said when she lowered her arm, shaking out her hair as she shrugged her heavy coat straight so it wouldn’t affect her draw. Practice back at the compound with bare arms was a sight different than trying to fire a bow with so much weighing her down… but ******** if she was taking any of it off.

Tara had given a snort and a laugh to his... accurate description of the birds. "Could be worse! The feathers could be laced with poison," she pointed out cheerfully. Of course, if the birds were smarter, they'd coat the feathers with the dung before firing them, likely causing infections and worse damage...

But the birds thankfully weren't apparently capable of thinking ahead like that.

Tara glanced towards the other girl, eyeing her hair at the notion of blinding the birds, and snickered. "Put more of that bright blue in, and you just might!" Looking back towards the swooping birds, she picked a target and as she exhaled to still herself, she let the arrow notched against the taunt string fly. It struck the bird hard, clipping it's wing almost off as the thing screeched. Yelping a little, Tara tried to back up a little but found herself bumping into the other two Chosen as the bird came falling into her. "Ooooh, bad idea," she winced as the creature struck her arms even as she tried to shove it away. A few new cuts and nicks were the reward she got for taking it down, but at least one bird was dead.

Zebulon snorted. The rainbow-haired girl could shoot back!

"Well, you're certainly drawing something to you," he remarked, eyeing the birds as they swooped towards them. "I just don't think they're adorable ducklings, unfortunately. Tough luck there."

When the other Chosen managed to back into them both, Zebulon lifted his shield to defend them from any further bird attacks while they resituated themselves. A secondary bird saw this as an opportunity to come down and swoop as he predicted, which Zebulon was not having. When he thought he judged the bird had come close enough, he swung his shield outwards, attempting to smash the bird into the ground. It did send it backwards, at least, off them for the moment.

He shifted the shield to his other arm afterwards, shaking his arm out. He wasn't exactly well practiced with shield bashes, and it admittedly still stung quite a bit, especially when these birds kept tossing metal feathers at him when he moved the shield around.

Picking up where he left off, once he plucked a metal feather off his arm, he continued, "Not sure you'll even need to stand in direct sunlight. Get enough reflection off the snow here and you'll probably be golden!"

Sid’s nose wrinkled at the thought of poisoned feathers. Thank the gods they didn’t have to deal with that.

A body stumbling into her back sent her slight form forward and off balance, giving the birds above an opening for a spray of that horrid dung and Sidney gagged, burying her face into her elbow as she reeled back.

“Jesus christ, these things are putrid…” She wheezed as she drew her bow, taking aim down the arrow before she released it on an exhale of breath. Another bird fell with a crash of metal and she grinned, a note of something just a little bloodthirsty in the expression.

“Its that animal magnetism, Bae. They can’t get enough of me when I’m shining bright.” She laughed. “Hard not to, considering who decided to smile at me…”

“More blue might be an idea though… I went a little light on it this last round.” Sid began to hum as she pulled another arrow from her quiver. “Here we are, don’t turn away now…. We are the warriors that built. this. town. Here we are, don’t turn away now…

All this mention of ducklings made Tara pause, wondering briefly what these birds might have looked like as hatchlings or if they ever had a fluffy baby bird time. The mental images made her a bit queasy, and she shook her head with a shudder. "If you could get them to fall in line and listen to you like ducklings though, that'd be pretty rad." Birds of death following someone around affectionately would be pretty cute.

Not happening far as she could see, but hey.

"Use snow to get the dung off--don't get it in any cuts you might have!" Tara tried to turn around to help the other girl when she got sprayed, only to feel a metal feather zip by her face and cut her cheek a bit. Hissing, she turned back around, pulling up her bow and pulling back on the string. She fired quick, not really setting up the shot like she should have. It hit the bird, sure, but only really managed to graze it before it swooped away.

"You'd think as an Artemis chosen animals would like me more," she grumbled, eyeing the remaining bird. "Or that I'd at least be a better shot." She glanced towards the other two--the girl had mentioned something about someone that smiled at her... her deity? The lines made her grin, humming the tune of the Imagine Dragons song.

"Grab his shield and you can add another spotlight in, too," she jested, glancing over at the metal shield. "Though I'm kinda surprised they're not going after the shiny metal."

These really were s**t birds.

Apparently, their version of defending themselves was this toxic dung. Zebulon was relieved none got tossed at him, but that relief was only temporary as he soon found that some landed on his leg. Eugh.

Instead of fighting for the moment, he immediately set to scooping up snow to clean that right off. In the meantime, he listened carefully to the conversation. Shining bright? Smile at me? The soon additional singing made a few things click in his head. Apollo was the god of light or something, right?

So she was Apollo, and the other Chosen was Artemis. Good to know.

"Apollo, right?" Then, he turned towards the Artemis Chosen and added, "I'm fairly sure these things aren't magpies. Or really something Artemis would love. Just a hunch I have."

As soon as he got the nasty poison dung off his leg, he suddenly popped back up and swung around at a bird that was about to hit him with more poison dung, presumably. It fell into the ground and stopped attacking, thankfully. They were almost done with these birds now...

"If you can get them to follow you, maybe have them aim this s**t at something more helpful."

“Yeah well, you wouldn’t think an Apollo would be night owl, would you?” Sid laughed as she broke off her singing for the moment. “Good to know I’m not the only misfit in this little rag tag band of Merry Men. And women.”

She tossed a salute over her shoulder to answer the taller man’s question, the gesture flippant and jesting. Their efforts seemed to be paying off and the flock was thinning out, birds falling around them to litter the snow with their corpses like discarded teakettles, the light glinting off their metal sides. With one left, Sid set her stance and drew her bow back, sighting down the shaft.

Ready, aim, fire…” She hummed. “Ready, aim, fire!

She released on the last note and the arrow sank into the breast of the last bird, sending it into a death spiral before it smacked into the snow with a muffled sound of clanking ******** YES.” Sid crowed as she threw her arms up over her head, dancing in place. “SUCK IT BIRDS.”

A light spin on the toes of one foot and she turned her bright grin on her two partners, her arms spread wide.

“Good job folks! That was some good work with that bow and shield you two have. You’ve both got a job if you ever want to guard my back again.” She offered them a jaunty wink before she shook herself out, left over energy and adrenaline practically sparking from her like static electricity.

Tara perked up a bit when the guy made the deduction that the bright-haired girl was an Apollo Chosen, peeking over at her curiously. She'd not yet met a Chosen of her deity's twin, something she'd been interested in. There weren't any signs that the connections between the different gods would have any impacts on the Chosen, of course, but she'd still been looking forward to meeting those under the protection of the deity arguably closest to hers.

"Well you've got a good voice so can definitely see why Apollo'd nudge you!" Though she suspected it was hardly a single trait or quality that pulled in a deity's attention. Still, she grinned. "Agreed though. We've got a heck of a band of Merry... Folk running around," she finished after a slight pause to consider a suitable gender neutral term.

"What about you?" She shot the question to the man with the shield, friendly smile on her face before looking over quick to the other girl as she began to sing the lyrics to another Imagine Dragons song. Letting out a whoop of cheer at the sight of the final bird going down, Tara unstrung her bow and clapped her hands. "Awesome shot!"

Turning around to fully face them, the offer to team up again made her flush and smile. "Not against it! Name's Tara, by the way. Nice to meet you two." Lifting a hand to wave once she finished winding up her bow string, she winced a bit as she felt something in her hair. Frowning, she reached up, slowly pulling out another metal feather. "Oh! Well. Guess I get a second souvenir," she chuckled. Must have come off from the bird that landed on her... huh. Amused, she slid it into one of her pockets along with the other metal feather she'd already collected. Useful things.

"It takes all sorts, really," responded Zebulon with a shrug, probably his most serious answer of the fight so far. He imagined, besides for the whole doctorate thing, he might have seemed a little off for an Athena Chosen himself.

But what really was an Athena Chosen supposed to be like? He wasn't going to pretend to understand gods at this stage. That was probably something that would come with more time...

When the question was shot at him, Zebulon temporarily considered withholding that information before remembering that they were all supposed to wear those obvious pendants anyway to make them all known to each other. Not that the ancient weapons didn't already make that rather obvious--

The Rainbow Apollo Chosen brought down the last bird with a whoop, distracting him from his temporary mental dilemma. He grinned wickedly at seeing the stupid thing go down. "At least we don't have to deal with that crap anymore." Literally. "The bows and shield combo seems like a pretty good combo to me."

So Artemis Chosen was Tara and he was probably expected to actually introduce himself this time-- "Zebulon, here. Chosen of the Goddess of Science."
