Only slightly disconcerted (he'd seen and experienced much weirder now, after all), Connor gave his head a rough shake, and mumbled a few choice expletives under his breath as he fished a key out of his pocket and let himself inside, hefting the oddly heavy envelope in his hand and turning it over to look at either side as he did so. Once inside, he nudged the door shut with his heel, still staring down at the object in his hand, when suddenly, a whine and a bark distracted him enough that he was looking back up, towards his living room and the large kennel that Peebles was currently occupying as he attempted to house train her.
"Hey, Princess." He quirked a half smile, tapping the edge of the envelope with his index finger, curious about what was inside, while also apprehensive enough to ignore it for just a while longer, as he made his way to the living room, setting it down on the arm of his couch before striding towards the kennel and opening it to let her out.
"Come on, lets go for a walk."
-----
It was at least an hour later before Connor found himself at home again, now sitting on the couch with a ball of rambunctious rottweiler puppy squirming all over his lap, lunging towards his face, licking his nose, only to turn and aggressively bump into his arm and begin chewing on his wrist.
"Jesus, Peebs, settle down. You're going to spill my drink." He commented, removing his now drool covered wrist from between sharp puppy teeth to scoop up the glass that rested one cushion over before she could send it spilling to the floor with her ferociously wiggling butt. Letting out a sharp bark, she slumped down, one paw and head both on the top of his thigh as she looked up at him with sheer adoration.
"And stop being so ******** cute. It's distracting." He smiled, though with a glance to the envelope sitting on his right, the smirk quickly faded, and he leaned forward to set the drink down on his coffee table before sighing and picking the damned thing up, again turning it over in his hand, noting the odd smell that permeated off of the paper.
Finally, he opened it, pulling out the letter within, which from a key slid out onto his lap.
Of course, the puppy lunged for it, and he snatched it up before she could get her greedy little chompers on it. "No." He scolded her, as he was then forced to hold the object high as she attempted to climb his arm to get to it. "No, you little s**t. Stop it." With both hands occupied, and an incorrigible small beast jumping all over him, Connor finally had enough, and stood up, forcing the puppy to either dive off of his lap or slide off of him onto the floor.
Finally free, he moved to his kitchen, and read the damn letter, Peebles jumping down from the couch and bounding after him.
Sorrowful one? Tithe? Unmasking? It wasn't hard for Connor to work out that he'd just been invited to some kind of Otherworld masquerade. Of course, his first thought was that he should just ignore it, but then, he wondered, about the consequences of such action. Would it come back to bite him in the a** later? As much as he was loathe to give in to all of this mystical, magical, creepy s**t, it seemed it wasn't just going to go away just because he wanted it to.
A small whine from far below, and he was drug out of his thoughts. Looking down, he noticed that Peebles was looking back up at him, sitting, head cocked, quiet and still, the opposite of how she usually behaved. It was almost as if she were concerned.
He stared back down at her for a long moment, and then let out a long breath that he had been holding. "Go play, Peebs. Go find your ball." He urged her, usually finding that the magic "b" word would generally get her full and undivided attention for two seconds before she'd go running off to find it.
Except she still didn't move. Just let out another small whine that left an uneasy feeling in the pit of Connor's stomach. "Ya, ya. I know. I'm not ******** thrilled about it either, Princess."
Turning away from her, he reached into his back pocket and fished out his phone. The letter had said come alone or in a pair, and while he didn't exactly have a date in mind, there was at least one person who he thought might be interested, if not ecstatic, to come along.
Tapping on his phone a few times, he held it up to his ear and waited until the other line was picked up.
"Hey, ********, it's your lucky day!"
