Quote: This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested! A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung. Hit points: 60 Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked. If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory. The battles before had all felt riddled with uncertainty. Confidence and skill had started out strong, only to begin crumbling as a reality of death loomed over her. She'd done well; she'd killed in groups and on her own. Yet none of it had quite felt right. There was no safety at her back or near her side. The play had fizzled out to be replaced with seriousness. And despite speaking to Cas, she'd wondered whether it was her that was wrong in this setting. Perhaps she wasn't cut out to be a warrior, maybe she needed to go to her core skills. Even then she found herself ready to throw herself into the fray but this time, this time, she knew what had been missing from the tests before. Beside her were Cas and Rose. Quickly they were becoming touchstones, a serenity enveloped in the chaos of a new world that had shaken everything up. A bond had sprung, instant, between them. There was an ability to care for one another, to make humor and laughter, to flirt until a semblance of peace was captured to be held onto and remembered. With these two beside her, she could succeed. She could do all that she needed to do. Not even the damn birds, a swarm screeching before them, could rattle the knowledge that together they were strong. Invincible in the way that they would all protect one another. Marisol looked towards the birds, "Shall we make a bet?" she teased. This was no different from practice. With that in mind, she went on the attack. The whip lashed out and promptly cracked into the wing of one of the birds that was zooming towards them. It squawked, tumbling, and damn if that wasn't a satisfying way to start. Marisol's Health: 47 - 5 = 42 HP Bird's Health: 60 - (100% x 4) = 56 HP

"I'm not really a gambling man," Cas said as he stepped up beside Marisol. "But I wouldn't mind taking you up on that." His sword swung through the air and caught a bird near its tail. Cas felt a deep satisfaction in seeing the thing falter, drop half a foot through the air before regaining its altitude. It was weakening already. This first hit wasn't his best, but his previous few battles had taught him to be patient with these birds. They always screwed up sooner or later, and it was only a matter of waiting for them to do so. He wasn't worried. And this time, rather than fighting solo, he was in the company of two strong women he trusted. They had proven their fighting ability time and again, whether they realized it or not, and Cas felt more than confident fighting beside them. This might even be fun, for a change. Cas' HP: 50 - 5 = 45 Damage dealt: 50% x 6 = 3 Birds' HP: 56 - 3 = 53 Weapon: Sword (base 6)

Rose fell easily into place with the two, feeling the lithe muscles in her arms taut from all the bow usage as she knocked the arrow into place. She took aim, and just as Marisol spoke, she let it go -- and to the surprise of no one, it entirely missed. The songstress gave the two an incredulous look, brows high and eyes wide. After a moment of the stunned silence, she uttered a soft laugh, disbelief tinged with deepest amusement. "You're both impossible," she said plainly, even though the words held nothing but the deepest fondness. "Of course it's a bet. Lay out your terms." "We have to make this fun somehow," she insisted as a nearby bird turned sharply to attack the blonde. The movement was quick, a drop of the arm that sent the leather wrapping around the creature's throat and pulling it off course. If it was lucky it'd end up on the sword of the man next to her. Otherwise... Thoughtful, as well as keen-eyed, she began to consider what would make them laugh most. As much as just leaving this place would be a massive weight falling from their shoulders, it would help if once they got there they had something to do. "Whoever lands the kill shot on the final bird," she began, "gets to dress the other two in whatever they wish." As a bonus it offered a shopping trip, if they could get away from the campus for a little while. And it could go in so many directions. Teamwork, making the dream work as always. As Marisol flung the bird toward him, Cas drove his sword forward. Right on point, it speared the thing square in the chest. The bird beat its wings in a futile attempt to escape, but it was too late. He yanked it down and smashed it into the ground vehemently. "As long as I don't end up running around in heels, I'll take it," he said with a smirk, yanking his sword out of the downed bird. It was an interesting proposition, anyway. He was curious to see how any of them might try to dress him, and whether it'd be anything like the way he usually dressed himself. Probably not. Cas' HP: 45 - 5 = 40 Damage dealt: 100% x 6 = 6 Birds' HP: 45 - 6 = 39 Weapon: Sword (base 6)

The bet was met with a soft 'tsk!,' admiring their teamwork briefly before aiming over Cas's back as he slammed the bird down, letting fly her arrow. It sunk deeply into the metal bird's shoulder and chest, throwing it off kilter and ultimately away from the trio. "If I win, I promise the most predictable and boring outcome," Rose said by way of agreement, looking skybound with a smile that was playful but wistful, already imagining the outfits she could put them in. It was enough to warm her even in the biting cold of the snow. Besides, dressing up could always entail the dressing down part, too. The blonde drew in a sharp breath and repressed a smile, pink touching her cheeks. These two were most certainly the ones to bring out her greatest focus -- and her worst. "Now that's an idea," she chuckled at the man's stipulation but ultimately agreed. As a dancer she'd never found heels to be as upsetting as many other people did. That wasn't to say they were a choice she'd usually make since her feet were often battered and bruised and bloody and nearly broken. "No heels for Cas, then." A bird near the blonde, shrieked, and Marisol twisted her hips to aim the whip at it. The leather lashed against it's chest and the creature fell back, tumbling in midair until it crashed into a pile of snow, leaving a vague hole behind. "I bet you'd dress us in finery," she grinned at Rose. Already imagining the three of them in a jazz joint from the 20s. As for what she might dress the other two in, she was keeping her options open. Marisol's Health: 37 - 5 = 32 HP Bird's Health: 33 - (100% x 4) = 29 HP

He glanced over at Rose, thought of the finery she might dress them in to make them look like something straight out of the roaring 20s, and figured he'd probably be alright with that. It was hard to say no to an excuse to dress to the nines, even if he was more comfortable in boots and sweat pants half the time. "I'm almost sure I know what I'd do," Cas said with a thoughtful nod as he jabbed his sword into a bird's eye and left it flapping indignantly. If nothing wasn't an option then, he'd get a little more creative. Then again, the choices were endless, and bad Halloween costumes didn't sound like a horrible theme either. "Perhaps," she responded with a coy, dimpled smile. "The real question would be, who is wearing the suit, who is wearing the lounge gown? Or," the arrow fell into place, blue eyes narrowing against the glint of sun off the metal feathers, "perhaps just a slip? Maybe just a pair of heels?" The arrow was let to fly, and the bird Cas had just hit was practically cleaved in half with the force of her shot. The songstress uttered a soft 'hm!' of pleasure, both at her success (finally!) and the notion of uprooting their expectations - of scrambling her own expectations. Turning her head to look at the two, she smiled a bit more mischievously. "Perhaps, in the end, I would surprise you both." Unlikely. But maybe. "It looks like it won't be me choosing the outfits," she laughed as her whip tore down the second to last bird. One remained, fluttering around them, and she wondered who would be the one to win this little bet. She supposed it was only fair, she had won last time. "All I ask is no tutus, I have worn enough to last me ten lifetimes over," she threw out last minute. She had nothing against them, they were simply a part of a ballerina's life. That didn't mean she'd want to go out on the street wearing them. "You always surprise us," she stated as she dodged the bird's second attack and whispered into Rose's ear with a wink. "Me neither, I guess," Cas said with a shrug as he went for a hit, only to have the bird jerk back at the last minute and dodge the bulk of the sword's blade. "Guess you can't win everything." Not that it mattered too much. He was as curious as anyone to see what Rose would come up with - if and when they ever made it up this godforsaken mountain, anyway. As the days wore by, it seemed as if they'd killed plenty of birds, but to no avail. Shouldn't the gods - or somebody else, for that matter - have issued some more particular orders by now? Maybe they'd just missed them. Cas: 35 - 5 = 30 Bird: 6 - 3 = 3

Her eyes practically glowed at the little shared comment, returning it with a smile that was more tender than anything. Marisol had a way with words that brought Rose back into her own head, even when she felt they were all in danger of just losing it all -- the fight, the moment, their damn sanity. "No tutus," she promised them both, not about to let Cas think he was going to be subjected to one. "Not everything," she agreed, pressing her back against his to line up her shot before the bird could get away. "But we'll all be winners." The arrow was let fly, spearing the bird through the chest. It fell to the snow with a muted blast of cold air, and with a small smile, Rose lowered her bow. "Bet or not, I wont let your hard work go without a reward in turn, be that helping me pick something out or a song." Or both, but she wasn't going to spoil them so quickly; she had to relish her win a little. Settling the weapon over her shoulder, she put a gloved hand on each of their forearms, squeezing with gentle encouragement. "That was the best I've performed, and the fastest fight I've seen the entire time. If I didn't already know we were God-touched, I'd question it now." "With these small swarms, the only time I felt the fight went well was when there were too many chosens to birds," she chuckled. This was the first time she really felt as though her skill had shown in the battle. The ones before all seemed to beat her down, to where she wondered what was different between a battle and practice. It seemed the answer was who she had beside her; it came as no surprise that the time she excelled, it was these two. There seemed to be no souvenirs from the carcasses near her and she was focused more on an idea that had formed in her mind. Reaching out to squeeze the blonde's shoulder, she wandered over to Cas and dropped her voice to a whisper. "Since Rose gets to dress us up, perhaps we should get to buy her a swimsuit of our choice?" she suggested. 23: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.

"I would argue you both fought better than I did," Cas said with a smile as he bent to poke through the fallen birds' remains, as he always did after a fight. Most times, there was nothing left to salvage, but sometimes he got lucky. Like the last time, with that bit of poisonous dung leftover, which he reluctantly carried with him now on the off chance that he'd feel the need to fling crap in someone's face. You never knew. He paused, pushing a lifeless wing out of the way with a booted foot, and then knelt to inspect the ground. Snow half-covered it, but... Ah, there it was. The metal feather he'd been looking for. Perfect. Cas wiped the snow off it and stowed it away in one sleeve. "You'll never hear me say no to shopping for something like a swimsuit," he said finally, rising from where he crouched and shooting Marisol a wolfish grin. "I think Rose deserves it." +15 XP, + metal feather

"Excuse me?" Rose laughed, as if they hadn't just engaged in battle, as if they hadn't just felled the small flock, but were out having a grand old time. "I was supposed to be the winner, and letting are sweet darling Cas help choose a bathing suit seems otherwise." She was teasing, of course, glancing over to the man that was scavenging the birds. To Marisol, she extended a hand to gently touch her forearm again, before turning to join the Marine in his work. She used the toes of her boots to turn the bodies, not wanting to damage her gloves against the metal. After a moment of looking, she added, "I'll agree to that as long as I get final say. I trust you both with my life, but not my wardrobe." Rose flashed a brief, playful grin before resuming her search, pausing when she heard something slosh in one of the bodies. Crouching, she used the tip of her bow to roll one of the bodies over -- it was the one she'd nearly split in half. Fingers delicately pressing the cleaved halves, and though she didn't immediately see anything, she heard the slosh again -- and realized it was higher in the chest cavity. Rose was delicate, not wanting to slice up her garments or her skin, fingers searching until she found what she was looking for; removing it, she discovered it to be a metal heart, still containing some of the beast's blood. The songstress couldn't fathom what she'd use it for, but she tucked it away all the same. Stranger things had happened.
