Cas had spent the better part of the morning racking up shots and kills on the giant metal birds. He'd seen some of the feathers they'd loosed and had taken it upon himself to find one, knowing it would prove useful one day in battle. This was a man who loved having tricks up his sleeve for when times were dire, and he was willing to put in the time and effort to procure those tricks.

After another short break in which he'd scoured the kitchen for a quick meal, Cas returned to the outdoors and threw himself with almost reckless abandon into his now highly personal fights with the metal birds.

"Come on," he taunted, whistling to catch one's attention. When it let out a screech and veered toward him, he leaped forward to meet it head on and jabbed his knife up at its wing.

The sword connected. The bird jerked back, wrenching itself free of the blade and recover.

Cas' HP: 50 - 5 = 45
Damage: 100% x 6 = 6
Bird HP: 25 - 6 = 19

His next attempt didn't connect, but Cas had done enough to these to know it didn't matter. His sword bit through empty air, the bird dodging gleefully away from the swing.

Cas brought the sword back to the ready position, eyeing the new opponent and keeping his weight low. Balanced on both feet, bouncing and ready to strike at any moment, he kept his eye trained on his opponent, reading its body language for signs of an imminent attack.

The bird suddenly dove forward. Cas saw it come, blocked its attack with his arm while it tried to claw at his shoulders.

Patience.

Cas' HP: 45 - 5 = 40
Damage: 0% x 6 = 0
Bird HP: 19 - 0 = 19

The bird was still feisty, triumphant from its earlier dodge. It squawked loudly as it rose, circled, then dove again, falling toward Cas with wings tucked in to take advantage of gravity's incessant pull.

This time, it was Cas' turn to duck. He dodge just in time to keep the bird from colliding bodily into him, but not quite in time to completely dodge the wings. The feathers clipped him across the shoulder. He was reward with a soft blow on the bird for his efforts.

Then, snapping the word back down, he bounced away.

Cas' HP: 40 - 5 = 35
Damage: 50% x 6 = 3
Bird HP: 19 - 3 = 16

Cas figured by now that he'd worn the bird down about halfway. It didn't look ragged like the second one he'd fought, but neither did it look as spry and fresh as it had a few minutes ago.

And, in the same vein, he probably displayed the same - small signs of fatigue, but not nearly enough to make him seem vulnerable yet.

It was a relief to think that, so far, he hadn't reached nearly the kind of exhaustion he'd felt before in fights, some of them years ago. The kind of quiet desperation that took hold when he knew he was close to dropping, and yet was desperate not to. The adrenaline in those moments was unbelievable.

Several times in his life, he'd walked away from a fight - staggered, more like - wondering dimly how he was still alive, or how he'd managed to turn the tide and win.

A bulldog-like tenacity, according to his CO, and a refusal to accept defeat.

Cas' HP: 35 - 5 = 30
Damage: 100% x 6 = 6
Bird HP: 16 - 6 = 10

Tenacity was what he focused on.

Sure enough, not long after his miss and half hit, he found his window of opportunity again. The bird dropped a little too low and he sprang with deadly accuracy to bury his blade into its body. The creature jerked away and here, finally, he saw the signs of exhaustion creep through it.

It was just about done. He, on the other hand, still felt strong. A little tired, but nothing that another rest and some food wouldn't banish quickly enough.

But this bird was done for.

Cas' HP: 30 - 5 = 25
Damage: 100% x 6 = 6
Bird HP: 10 - 6 = 4

He went in for the final blow, almost gleeful as he struck the thing down. How many was that now? He'd almost lost count. Each time he brought one down, he felt a new confidence in his swing and the way he dropped the sword back into its sheath, knowing that he needn't worry about these foes.

As long as he didn't something stupid, like get himself caught unawares by a flock, he'd be alright.

Cas took a step back as the newly-defeated bird crashed into the snow, a pile of metal feathers and broken body that would no longer terrorize this mountainside. Even if one was, in the grand scheme of things, not a lot, it made a difference. The numbers would add up.

Cas' HP: 25 - 5 = 20
Damage: 100% x 6 = 6
Bird HP: 4 - 6 = ded

Cas poked through the body again, looking for potential keepsakes. He hadn't had much luck the first few times, but this time, there was... Well. He almost hesitated to take it, but the poisonous dung would no doubt prove useful as well in a fight. With a sigh, he scooped it into a sealed container and stowed it away.

Gross, but satisfying nonetheless.
