Quote: This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested! A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung. Hit points: 60 Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked. If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

There was something almost addicting about going back outside the hotel, bow in hand, waiting for the birds to spot her and come at her. She held onto her personal motto, thus far anyways, of don't throw the first punch. Though how much longer she'd hold onto that motto, she really was beginning to question. Perhaps something to ponder another day--her distraction for now was incoming.
She could hear the screech of the birds before she saw them, and as a handful approached, Tara pulled out an arrow from her quiver and notched it against the bow string. Pulling back slowly, she closed an eye and took careful aim. She was getting better at archery. Though it was almost as much luck as skill to her at this point. This arrow flew fast, and hit with perfect force, piercing one bird's back and making it shriek before it retaliated by flinging one of it's sharp feathers at her. Tara tried to duck, but it still caught her shoulder, ripping her jacket and just causing her more reasons to grumble. Yeah that jacket was going to be nothing but slap job patches by the time this was all done...

That whole idea about insanity, she was going to have to rethink it. There wasn't much else to explain this constant fighting of birds. Other than that she'd seen someone leave the hotel and at this point, it was just natural to follow so no one was getting in over their head. As she found, it all seemed easy and could so quickly go down hill. The woman in front of her, she hadn't yet met, but she wasn't about to let her fight a swarm alone. Readying the whip in her hand, she lashed out at the first bird that was in range. It slammed against the creature's head and she couldn't help feeling good about that. She'd started to think she was cursed whenever she fought in groups. Marisol's Health: 47 - 5 = 42 HP Bird's Health: 48 - (200% x 4) = 40 HP

Ernst wasn't much of a fighter, which really didn't explain why he kept finding himself back out here.
Maybe it was the hope that there were more survivors who they could squirrel away in the hotel, away from the ******** birds. Certainly he didn't like trudging through the bodies that by now littered the floor outside the hotel and lodge area: those of fallen civilians (he - ugh, he didn't want to say he was hoping for any sort of human death, but the thought that any of the human bodies might belong to Chosen was really quite frightening. He'd die in the pursuit of art, certainly, but this was a really indirect method. He hadn't even seen his latest film through to Sundance.) and those of felled birds. Those weren't as viscerally disgusting, but the birds still bled. They still had some kind of life in them.
And of course, any trip outside meant that birds circled above. There was a little group of people forming, with almost delicate-looking weapons: although of course that wasn't necessarily telling.
So Ernst came running. He wasn't much of one for fighting, sure, but he hated the idea of leaving anyone in the lurch. He pulled his shield up in front of the two women already gathered and smacked it upward vertically at the birds, which he'd found to be way more effective than just holding it above them.
The feathers were sharp, but his shield, and his Mark, could take the hits, for now.

Mathilda had been dodged birds and enjoying her walk when she spotted Tara and several others gaming up on some birds. Grinning, she ran toward them, waving. "Hello! Mind if I step in?" As bird scratched her hand, she plunged her dagger into it, stabbing it into the ground. Mathilda HP: 45 Soon to be dead swarm: 27 HP Weapon: Dagger

Mal had learned his lesson from the last swarm; this time he picked a group that looked like it had a lot of bodies in it. It didn't matter how well they hit if there were so many of them that they just kept hitting the damn things. And he was actually quite chuffed to think that he'd done a not terrible job of weeding out some of the stinking pooping pretend birds. "After you," was all he said to the woman -- baker, the part of his brain that was still a detective said. Baker, business owner, books. "Mathilda." He stepped up to meet a bird gliding down, and swung from the shoulders and hips; baseball approved technique, but it hit the bird solid and square, edge on, and it left him grinning as it screeched. Even if he did lose another piece of his damn coat. Mal's HP: 45Overkilled Swarm: 27 - 6 = 21Weapon: Sword - Balanced Melee

Having others out there to fight alongside was becoming a comfort. The crack of something in the air made her turn, eyes wide and startled at the other woman who was using a whip to hit the birds. "That's freaking awesome," she cheered with all but stars in her eyes to see how efficiently she was wielding the weapon. Oh she was definitely going to have to ask her questions about how long it took to train with the whip!
When a guy moved in front of them with a shield, Tara recognized him from the slopes with the speakers. "Name's Tara, by the way, thanks for the assist," she shot out in a cheery voice to the two Chosen she didn't have names for yet--she could see Mathilda and Mal incoming as well, and felt... well... happy actually. Perhaps that was an odd sensation to have when fighting against potentially deadly foes, but it was just... a relief to have others there.
Plus! Mathilda was there. Tara couldn't help it. She'd been hoping to show the blonde how much better she'd been getting with her bow, and well... "Mathilda! Watch!" Stepping back a bit from the others to make sure she didn't hit any of them by gross mistake, she mostly ignored the shot of dung another flung at her arm. She'd deal with that in a moment.
Her attention was focused on her arrow and her aim, and god damn it. She was beaming like the cat that caught the canary when her arrow slammed full force into another bird, piercing through it's wing and taking it to the ground. Still a long ways to go before she was a perfect shot... but hey, she'd take what she could get.

As people filled in around her--Ernst and Mathilda, she recognized, as well as Mal--she found that it didn't matter as much whether there were any mistakes in her fight. She was rallied by the group and she didn't even flinch when a metal feather went soaring towards her, sliding beneath the edge of her coat and slicing against her calf. In retaliation, she threw her whip out and managed to wrap the leather around the offending bird's neck. With a harsh tug, it plummeted and crashed into the snow. It's neck broken and no longer able to harm anyone. For once, she didn't need rescuing or help from these mobs; if anything, she was finally doing as much damage as she knew she was capable of. "Now this is more like it," she grinned. Marisol's Health: 42 - 5 = 37 HP Bird's Health: 9 - (200% x 4) = 1 HP

Ernst grinned lightly. There were a surprising number of familiar faces here, and the sound of someone introducing herself - the girl with the emergency bags - was Tara? And - just who was Mathilda? Several people had said that name, but Ernst couldn't be certain who was referring to themselves and who was greeting someone. Yeah, he was more than a little lost. Still, he introduced himself without much fanfare - probably because he was trying to look up at the bird. "Ernst!" he called to the group, but - where had the birds gone?
There had been three, he'd thought, but now there weren't any.
Or maybe they were just coming from behind him now. A sharp feather pierced the shoulder of his jacket, and he found himself turning with his tower shield, all too late. And - ********. The momentum of the turn hadn't stopped, which meant he'd also slipped onto the ground.
This sucked, he thought, but he picked himself up grimly and waited for his turn to strike again. It actually looked like, somehow, only one bird was still flying.

Mathilda narrowed her eyes as a bird got too close. Pursing her lips, she swung her blade up, colliding the daggers dull side against its belly, ending it flying into the sky. "Die birdie die." Turing to the group, Mathilda grinned. "These birds seem to be getting easier. I am the only one noticing that?" Mathilda HP: 40 Soon to be dead swarm: -1 HP Weapon: Dagger

Mal watched the dead bodies of the birds for another minute-- they were twitching, but he judged it to be death twitching at this point. He cleaned his sword and then picked a quieter body to investigate. Maybe he should have picked a twitcher; he got nothing for his pains but the opportunity to see one of the things up close and personal (and smelly) as it died.

Tara laughed, pleased as could be at how quickly that all went. Yes, it was definitely because of how many of them had been out there to take the birds out, but still! "Could be a mix of how many of us where here, and just a basic growing awareness of how to fight them," she chimed in. At least on her part, fighting the birds was becoming easier as she got more experience with her bow.
Moving over to one of the fallen birds, she noticed one of the metal feathers, long and sharp, was loose and managed to pull it easily from the bird. "I think I'll keep this. Seems fair after all the ones they've tossed." Looking back to the other Chosen, she smiled brightly. "Thanks again for the assist against them!" She'd considered adding it was fun! but wasn't sure if the sentiment would be shared and kept that quiet.

This was by far the fastest defeat of a swarm that she'd participated in. Obviously the amount of people had helped immensely but she'd like to hope that her skill was increasing as well. Even if it seemed that she did her best when it didn't matter. She was doing something right since she hadn't died; it had better stay that way, too. Everyone had come through relatively unscathed, except the birds who littered the ground. Approaching the nearest bird, she wrinkled her nose at the literal s**t that it had used earlier in its attacks. Gross. Yet it had been effective and so she gathered the strength to collect the dung. A shudder rippled through her body as she slid the vile into her pocket and decided she really needed to sanitize her hands. "Whether it was our skills or our numbers, I'm just glad the birds are dead." 61: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. Mathilda grinned as she kicked the bird. It rolled over, falling into a hole in the snow. Nothing was left behind, but the birds were dead and that was all she cared about. "Well, no matter what the case may be, I'm glad we are all still in one piece. It seems you all got some good items too."

Ernst's whiff didn't really end up mattering: the people around him were quick to finish the birds off, and he grinned at them. Yeah, talk about being fortunate that there were others here. Although personally, he was pretty sure that the skirmish had only gone so well because, for once, they actually outnumbered the birds. That wasn't going to last for long, though.
So he knelt and scraped a vial along the floor - he really wanted to know what was up with these birds - and pocketed it. "Whatever the case, I don't want to stick around," he said, shaking his head and pointing his thumb back at the hotel. The message was clear: he was headed back in. "Stay safe!"
