New day, new fight. Bright and early, Cas was back at it again on the slopes, wrangling birds for a fight. It was part of his... let's call it process, a way to take out his frustration for the lack of intel he had on these creatures. What better way to exact a special kind of revenge on them than to kill them?

As far as Cas could tell, they had all been so busy handling the chaos immediately in front of them that there hadn't been many chances to discover what exactly had made these birds, what drove them, what their end game was. The prospect of an endless fight, in which more birds came at them with no rhyme or reason, was difficult enough. In some odd and inexplicable way, actually participating in that fight was cathartic in a way that pacing and thinking and building things was not.

After corralling one of the birds, Cas shook his head, rolled his shoulders, ducked claws and metal feathers, and swung.

Boom.

The sword collided with a fury into the bird, which staggered in the air and dropped a good foot as the blade tore into, leaving a wide gash along its body.

Cas nodded then, more to himself than anything. Good.

His next hit, not so much.

There was no hit, in fact. He missed wildly as, mid-swing, he noticed the bird and flung a clump of rancid crap at him. Rather than take the clod of dung to the face, he ducked, felt it fly past, and recovered with the sword, bringing it back to the ready position.

The more he fought these things, the more he understood how to approach them. It only made sense. Every opponent was different, and it took a while to learn their ways. Which was why he did his best not to repeatedly spar with the same people - learning to adapt to new styles and strangers' ways was crucial in any good training plan.

It's just training, he thought to himself as he squared off with the bird again. Just you and me, bird.

HP: 45 - 5 = 40
Damage: 0% x 6 = 0
Bird: 13 - 0 = 13

In the weeks since he'd arrived at the Prytaneum, he'd put in the hours training with the sword. This wasn't the style of combat he'd devoted a decade of his life to. There weren't M16s at the Prytaneum. The tactics that he'd had drilled into him over the years weren't a hundred percent applicable all the time.

Fighting with the sword was like close quarter combat, but with more range and less maneuverability. Landing a punch of a slash of the palm was quicker, sharper, closer. It required movement based more on reflex than thought. With the sword, every move was more deliberate, more planned, more deadly.

He'd had to learn, become more patient, more present. But it was paying off.

Cas watched the bird with careful eyes, then lunged forward and jabbed at its chest. The hit was solid. The bird dropped again, losing altitude.

His next one fell a little short of what he'd intended. The bird jerked, body flooded by a second wind as he swung. It lifted laboriously into the air, in an attempt to avoid his swing. Too little, too late. But Cas could tell as he blade ate into the metal that he'd missed his real target.

A small scowl formed on his face, playing around his lips, as he wrenched the sword free and stared the bird down again.

Be patient. Set up for the final blow.

The thought went through his mind, and he took a breath, waiting. The bird came at him again and he parried it without hesitation, stabbing the blade up at its wing. Not a lethal hit by any means, but Cas was biding his time now. He had this battle won, and more than just wanting to put the bird down, he wanted to do it with style.

So he waited, bouncing on his feet, looking for the opportune moment.

It presented itself then, as the bird struggled against the previous blow, staggering in the sky as its broken wings struggled to find the wind again. It caught up upward gust, snapped its wings open, and ...

There it was.

The bird began to lift, winging closer to him. He leaped so he faced it directly, and brought his sword crashing down its length, almost cleaving the body into two.

A smirk flipped his scowl upside down. Cas carefully pulled his sword free, looking down at the lifeless bird. Job well done

Once again, he poked about the carcass, peering through its body cavity and under its wings for potential finds. Potential information. There was nothing that presented itself immediately as useful, so he took a step back to admire his handiwork.

"Instagram-worthy picture that would be," he said with a shake of his head.
