This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested!
A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung.
Hit points: 60 Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked.
If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:
1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.
"Same stuff, different door," Mal paraphrased the old complaint into something more friendly for younger ears. He smiled at his new companion-- Tara, and he made sure to remember her name. Too many M names lately, but a T name ought to be easier to remember for himself. Glancing out, he smiled at her again. "Ready?" This was more as a warning, because he knew she had a distance weapon as opposed to his own melee one, and Mal wanted to give her that extra beat to know that he was about to pop the door open and run out into the small bunch of birds that was starting to descend.
With her acknowledging that, though, he did exactly what he planned; popped the door open and rolled right into the attacking birds himself, striking fast and hard with his sword. It bit deep and he was glad, even if the smell of the things was just -- he was going to have to throw everything he was wearing out.
He hoped the smell didn't get impregnated into the plastic frames of his glasses. He had a feeling it would anyway, though.

She was getting way too comfortable going out of the hotel to face the birds alone. So when she had the chance to go along with another Chosen--this time someone she recognized from before the whole endeavor, Mal--she was delighted. His warning was met with a grin and a firm nod of her head, bow in hand and arrow already notched.
"Ready as ever!"
His first murmur had made her toss him a questioning look--weren't they going out the same door as always?--but she didn't really get a chance to question it. Just like that, Mal had the door open and was swinging for the birds with his sword. When he struck one, she let out a cheer, following quick and aiming for the same bird. Her arrow made contact, and Tara grinned.
Even if another swooped her, making her yelp as she had to shove it back, wincing at the feeling of new talon scratches on her arm. Never ending with these guys...

Never, ever ending. But at least it wasn't poop. Mal swung again for the bird that had dipped low enough to catch Tara's arm, again more like a baseball bat than a sword. They weren't exactly fencing here, and there was nothing delicate about what Mal did to get the bird away --
And of course, he lost a tuft of fur from his coat. Of course. It made him sigh at his sleeve. At another time, if they had had time, it would have been mournful. "Crap, crap, crap."

Another bird shot a metal feather her way, and Tara gritted her teeth, lifting her bow and aiming for the creature. She managed to land a decent shot to it, knocking a chunk of metal feathers from it's body and gouging the creature's wing.
They were making pretty quick work of the birds, something Tara was surprisingly pleased at.

They were chewing through the birds excellently, and Mal was sort of surprised. Pleased, no doubt about it, but definitely surprised. He tried to keep that surprised feeling under lock, though; no doubt it would trip him up if he let it.
He hacked at the same bird that Tara had shot as it floundered, rowing air frantically with wings to get better altitude to attack again. Mal was almost getting used to losing tufts of fur and pieces of his coat.

She shot 'em, Mal hacked 'em. It was slowly becoming an easy, effective routine. The one that Mal just hit was still kicking a little, and when Tara shot at it again, delivering yet another gash to the creature, it screeched.
The bird managed to gain some air, whirling about and flying right past her--managing to catch her cheek with it's wing, making her yelp. Rubbing at her injured face a little, she let the silence fall. "I keep wishing we could move these birds somewhere where they could live in peace. But the more I think about it... I don't know if these birds can live in a modern ecosystem in peace anywhere... well, until they've destroyed the currently existing ecosystem anyways."

"I don't actually think they're real birds--" Mal interrupted himself with a grunt as he swung, and actually slipped a bit in the snow. It put extra momentum behind the swing, not that Mal wasn't grateful for it, because it slammed the edge of the sword into the bird in question with some serious extra force that Mal hadn't intended to put behind it.
Of course, it still splattered him with poop, and he hissed in annoyance. The smell was never going to come out. Really, never, and thank god it was cold. If it was warmer, the smell would be that much worse than it already was. "God-- damn." He puffed out a breath. "Crap. So much crap."

Tara winced at that. Wasn't the first time she'd heard it, and she had had such thoughts herself. "Who can be sure? Gods we all thought were myth are real. Who knows what other life exists?" Maybe she was being too idealistic...
But it certainly didn't keep her from disliking all the damage the creatures were causing. When more of the bird dung landed on Mal, Tara moved over towards him, taking some snow and trying to clean off some of it before it burned him.
The bird took the chance to fire some of the dung at her and Tara gagged, cleaning the substance off quick as she could and notching another arrow. The bird screeched, trying to dive towards her, but Tara managed to get her shot off--the arrow flying right through the bird's skull. The body landed with a dull thud and crunch of snow and metal at their feet, and Tara sighed.
"Still feel bad for them."
