After returning the small boy he and Rose had found out on the slopes to the grateful family, Cas decided he needed to have a go at this birds to understand, fully, what he was dealing with. Birds did not attack by throwing feathers and poisonous dung, that much he was sure of.
Then again, these were not, in his mind, birds. Though they had roughly the shape of an eagle, they were anything but.
The metal feathers he'd seen shooting through the air made him think machines. Technology. Someone had engineered these things, made them act as a swarm.
There had to be ways to be the swarm.
As it was, though, Cas needed intel, so he ventured back out into the cold and the snow and corralled off his own opponents.
"Let's see what you've got."

The bird did not seem please by the prospect of being separated from its flock, and it showed. The creature's displeasure manifested itself in its attacks. It flung a feather straight for Cas' face, flapping its wings with gusto as it did so.
"Jesus f-" Well that was rude. He ducked, feeling the metal whizz by his face as another feather embedded itself deep into his coat.
"Fine, we'll have some fun." With one hand, he yanked the feather out and with the other, swung the sword as the bird's wings came down. The sword connected the first time, but the bird swerved on the second, pulling up and away.

"Alright, I see the dance you're doing," Cas muttered on his recovery, twirling the sword once, feeling its balance and its weight. With every swing, he felt a little warmer, a little more prepared to pummel the bird. But it was a relatively new weapon and a new fight. Important not to get too caught up in the beginning. He could afford a few off hits, a few misses. As long as he went for it when it mattered.
More feathers came flying toward him. He dodged two, caught one in the shoulder with a grunt. Those things were tough, and caught with his sword arm too.
A determined growl came forth as he glared at the bird, daring it to do more. "You're not winning this one." That was a promise.

His next hit was good. Satisfaction flood through him as he felt and heard the bite of metal into its opponent. Quick, fast, no mercy. The blade positively sang on impact, a thousand little vibrations running up its length and into his arm, telling him he'd done what he needed to do.
Cas felt the familiar rhythm of a good fight start to settle into his body, gripping every muscle, and he danced light on the balls of his feet. For a quick moment, he locked eyes with the bird and felt it gear up for its attack. But he felt good. He was getting into his grove.
The flying feathers didn't bother him this time. Without having to think, he jabbed the sword up toward the bird's underbelly, feeling without seeing that it was going to land.

Land it did. The blade sheared against the bird's belly, driving up into its body with a ring that brought joy to Cas' ears. He was finding that fighter's high now, that wonderful spot in which the body moved almost of its own accord, anticipating the fight, reacting to it the millisecond something changed.
He yanked the sword out, feeling the bite of metal that told him he'd gone a little too close to land that hit, but it didn't matter. The bird was already beginning to falter. It was only a matter of time.

A couple more. A couple more should do it.
Cas leaped back to avoid the majority of a splash of brown, poisonous sludge that came out of the bird and went for its wings again. This time, the blade only just grazed it, but he saw it try to snatch the wing back and drop through the air, losing altitude.
Now, it seemed, came the opportune moment.

Just one more. The bird was losing steam, dropping rapidly toward the ground. Cas stepped around it, beside it, and as it fell to shoulder height, he swept the sword down on a sweeping overhand cut and slashed its head right off its neck.
The rest of the bird dropped to the ground like a stone, silent in its defeat. He wiped his blade off on the bird as best he could, and probed at it with minor curiosity, wondering what it might tell him in death that it would not in life.

Evidently little. There wans't much on its body that was worth salvaging - perhaps nothing that really could be. Cas shrugged, returning his sword to its sheath as he stepped over its prone form and made his way back toward the hotel.
If nothing else, that gave him a better idea of what he was up against.
