Ernst was not really sure what had possessed him to seek the birds out again.

Well, okay, mostly it was that he really wanted to get a better look at those birds. An intact corpse would be nice, of course. He was no biologist - he might have to call on Erica for that - but he was very curious, and he kind of wanted to know for practical effects inspiration purposes, maybe.

He wasn't stupid, though. He knew those birds were out there. He bundled the ******** up, zipped his hood around his face as tightly as he could, and carried his shield in front of him the entire way out of the hotel. He really should have grabbed an ally for this, huh?

But to his surprise, he wasn't immediately accosted. Maybe it was the pileup of bird corpses that now made up the path to the hotel: there were certainly enough here to stink the place up, and possibly serve as warning?

Haha. Wrong. When he was a few yards out, they did seem to spot him - but only one bird came swooping down toward him. s**t - this was probably a test. The rest would come if he was weak.

This enemy can be fought solo!

A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung.

Hit points: 25
Damage: 5 each time attacked

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

And he was weak. But he wasn't gonna let them know that. So he held his shield up, which totally left his arms open to attack by sharp feather.

Right, feather! Ernst fished the one he'd collected earlier out of his pocket and brandished it when the bird next came near. He did manage to slice the thing, but the bird hardly seemed fazed. In fact, it just kind of angrily pooped at him, and Ernst found himself hastily sidestepping as he kept his tower shield hanging uselessly in front of him, too panicked to attack.

He'd forgotten to go foraging for a ski mask. Of all the things Ernst had ever expected himself to regret, it wasn't this. Normally he stayed away from stuff that hid his pretty face. Unless his pretty face was cold, and in danger.

Which, yeah, meant now.

He wasn't going to let himself stay on the defensive forever, though, even despite the fact that he'd actively chosen to bring a shield out. Ernst mashed it upward to meet some new feathers being launched (and how could they do that? Were they some weird evolution of porcupines?), and then jumped and did himself another favor by snagging the bird in the underbelly.

Ha - take that. Tall guy plus tall shield equals good combination.

Ernst, being Ernst, could not resist the opportunity to guffaw out a pun. "Bet you're gutted!" he grinned. He did not have long to revel, however: it came back toward him with a vengeance. Honestly, the real mistake here was that it came near enough that he could touch it with his shield, as far as he was concerned. But maybe it was accustomed to fighting shorter humans.

That might explain why it bumped its head into his shield, all on its own.

Well, it was a bird. That meant Ernst was totally justified in banging it again, very harshly, with his shield, before backing off and giving it time to recover. He was a fair man, who was all for equal opportunities. Even for evil metal birds with the worst stool problem he'd ever had the misfortune to witness.

Ah, that was, until they attacked him with said stool. Then there were no more breaks for this particular bird. Ernst charged forward, only to find that it had wisely flapped away, probably to assess him for an opening.

That meant he should strategize, too, although Ernst wasn't really the greatest at combat strategy. Or combat. He did know how to hide behind his shield and move around, though, so he wasn't as easy of a target.

In fairness, the bird, by this point, seemed to be losing blood quickly, and more than a little disoriented, after a few hard bumps of its head against Ernst's shield. Maybe that made it only more vicious, or desperate, or whatever. What did these birds even want? There was no way this was their natural habitat.

Ernst cowered behind his shield, although he was unable to miss being struck by some feathers, because of course.

Feathers were sure as hell better than poop, though. Ernst found himself thinking this just as a new spray of poop escaped the bird's, uh, butt. There was a lot of poop here, actually, and Ernst found himself glad that it was Prytaneum's boots that he was soiling with this birdshit rather than his own shoes, which were very expensive, and which he'd paid for himself.

His focus on avoiding that feathered ******** poop, though, left him vulnerable to yet another aerial attack. The bird had needed to dip low to send its feathers flying this time, though, so Ernst wasted no time, advancing with his shield and smashing its chest yet again with his shield.

That...had been exhausting, and this bird's friends seemed to be circling warily now. Whether or not they found his display intimidating (and Ernst was willing to bet not, since he and his clothing were in much worse condition than they'd been earlier, even despite the mark's protection), he needed to get out of here soon, rather than looking for nice corpses.

Unless...Ernst turned to see the bird he'd just slain now.

And winced. It actually was in really bad condition - he must have been hitting harder than he'd thought. Nothing about it was salvageable. Which meant he was more than free to run the ******** back to the hotel, which he refused to call home, tail between his legs.

Hey, he'd tried, which was more than he could've said before.
