This enemy can be fought solo!

A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung.

Hit points: 25
Damage: 5 each time attacked

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

It wasn't long before Zan's mind began to wander in the spaces between bursts of activity. They still weren't starving or anything, but as it turned out, this hotel had far less stored food than he had thought it might, and watery vegetable soup was already starting to grow tiresome.

He stared unseeing out of the window, and when he found himself wondering how killer metallic bird meat might taste, he knew he had to do something else. Like kill one.

He thought he might be attacked on sight as he had been so many times before, but either he was getting stealthier or the birds were growing bored and complacent. He got all the way outside and behind one of the creatures before it turned just in time to get a dagger to the face.

It hopped away, wings flapping wildly, the gusts of air they generated pushing Zan back a couple of feet.

Not to be denied his retaliation, Zan followed it those few steps forward and brought his blade down again, sinking it into its feathery shoulder. Somehow, miraculously, it flapped a few more times before taking off and remaining just out of reach.

Zan watched the bird for a time, trying to strategize and plan an attack, but nothing was coming to him. There were no boxes or platforms nearby to hop off of, and the creature seemed perfectly content to drip blood into the snow at his feet, beady eyes watching him grow more and more frustrated.

"Hey," he eventually said. "Come down here so I can kill you." He didn't expect it to work.

But it did.

With a bob of its head, the bird dipped just low enough for Zan to reach it, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. His dagger sliced through the air, solidly hitting the creature's thigh, and Zan backed away from the raining blood.

It dove for him after that, pecking at his hair and face with desperate ferocity, but Zan returned nearly every hit with equal malice until the bird fell on top of him and they toppled to the ground, scrabbling in almost comedic silence.

Zan's arms ached, but the bird was finally starting to lose steam. It was riddled with holed, though most of them were only obvious to Zan because he had put them there. These things had stupendous natural armor, and for a second the Hermes Chosen thought of that crafting lab back at the Prytaneum full of people forging bird feather armor. He saw himself modeling said armor. And then the vision faded. He wasn't blessed by Hephaestus, and such thoughts bored him almost immediately.

With a purposeful grunt, he jammed his weapon into the side of the bird's neck and waited until it was still to back away. One more down.

He took his time catching his breath, seeing as how there were no other birds approaching to take out an exhausted foe. This creature was similar to the last one he'd fought, rangy and all feathers. He had no desire to try mining it for blood like the first beast he'd fought, and eventually he cleaned his dagger in the snow and headed back inside for more thin vegetable soup.
