This enemy can be fought solo!

A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung.

Hit points: 25
Damage: 5 each time attacked

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Fresh off of a search and rescue victory for Team Olympians, Zan felt quite a bit more positive than he had in a while now. Even as he stepped outside he wasn't quite sure that his postivity merited another go with the damn birds, but his subconscious seemed to think so and he wasn't in the mood for internal struggle.

Thankfully, it was only a single bird that rose to face him. He could handle this easily. He rushed the creature, grazing its metallic wings as it tried to claw his back.

The second strike Zan landed occurred after roughly ten minutes of standing under the bird, certain it would s**t on him as he waited for it to get low enough to strike. It flapped mockingly, well above where he could reach, and it was only another chance throw of his weapon that allowed him to injure his foe again at all.

Of course, lobbing his dagger at a bird only to have it stick there was arguably just as frustrating as failing to hit the creature at all, but he couldn't deny he was fully committed now either way.

Wait it out was not a strategy these things had taught him yet, but he wasn't above learning it now, he supposed. Even thought it wasn't fatigued and could have easily retreated, the bird stuck with him, beady eyes fixed on his upturned face. His dagger protruded from its meaty leg, and through the limb dangled uselessly, it didn't appear to mind.

Zan hopped and grabbed, and while he managed to land a few minor hits to the bird, it didn't seem any worse for wear.

Again and again he hopped, until he found his dagger in his palm for a split second and let out a surprised, "Hey!" when it slipped back out. The bird bobbed its head as if laughing at him, and now with a goal in place, Zan doubled his efforts to reach it.

It took another twenty breathless leaps, but this time when he felt his fingers wrap around the dagger's hilt, he didn't let go. It jerked out of the bird's leg with a trickle of ichor that the Chosen managed to neatly avoid, and then it was his turn to laugh as he hurried under one of the hotel's awnings to clean the weapon off.

When he was done, he stayed where he was for a moment, listening for any sign that the bird had cornered him. Sure enough, there was a scrabbling behind him, muffled but clever. Zan pivoted quickly, stabbing low. He was rewarded with the difficult resistance of metal feathers meeting his blade as he pushed through into the bird's flesh. He dragged the dagger upward, leaving a sizeable divot in the creature's chest. He watched it seep blood as the bird stumbled away then took to the air once more.

Zan hurried away from the building again, his eyes on the bird. He was not about to let it get away after all of this, even if he was forced to trampoline under it for another half an hour. Luckily, it no longer had the height it previously did, and it was easy to jump high enough on his first try to take its injured leg clean off.

The limb fell at an unexpected angle, bouncing off of Zan's coat and leaving a dark stain before he could move away. He sighed. He supposed he'd been lucky to stay relatively blood free for this long.

His next strike barely clipped the bird, but it must have been operating on its last ounce of strength because it fell back into the snow as a result, pushing to its remaining foot feebly. He felt that wash of sympathy again, but it was gone more quickly than ever this time. This was almost over. At the very least, he'd be putting the creature out of its misery.

His dagger sank deep into the bird's skull and it ceased its twitching almost immediately.

Feeling a little tired, Zan left the bird in the snow and headed back inside, putting it out of mind.
