Quote: This enemy can be fought solo! A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung. Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Well. This was off to a horrible start. Tara grunted as the bird spotted her before she spotted it, managing to slice her with one of its damn feathers. She'd gone back out--yet again, of course--with one... real big intent. Target practice. To force herself to become more skilled with her bow, and to, in a manner of speaking, beat back her unease.
As the metallic bird swooped around her, clearly aware of it's leg--wing?--up over her, she had to admit. It was making her guilt a lot less noticeable as she strung her arrow.

Though the bird was able to swoop down and rake her hair a bit with its talons, Tara was able to back up enough to line up a shot. The arrow flew fast, catching the bird in the stomach. It knocked a good chunk of the metal feathers off of it, along with disrupting the creature's flight.
Wasn't a downing shot, not by far, but the screech of rage didn't make her wince.

This one had just been poor timing on her part. Tara had lined up a good shot at the bird, and loosed the arrow... but it was the same time that the damn bird had shot a metal feather at her. It hit her hand, and had disrupted the path of her shot.
Still struck the bird at least! But she saw with a bit of dismay that it only dislodged a few of the feathers. She moved back further in the snow, trying to watch her footing. It seemed like a lot of the snow was slowly being packed down in parts, but she didn't want to corner herself in just one area...

This time, she let the bird sling it's attack first. As she expected, it screeched and dove at her. She managed to shove it back using her bow, and though she got some scratches for her trouble, the bird was shoved back enough that it had to try and circle around to go at her again.
Tara took that time to align her next shot. As the bird aligned towards her, and began it's speedy decent, she let the arrow fly... and it did it's job, flying right into the bird's chest. The bird's right, unfortunately, not it's left. The creature screeched and she ducked in time to avoid getting slammed by it. She grabbed another arrow as it awkwardly climbed back up into the air on exhausted looking wings.

She'd um. Figured the bird that injured would move a lot slower. But nope. After it made it's awkward climb back into the air, the freaking thing... managed to fling some of that dung at her. Tara yelped, dropping her bow for a moment as she grabbed fists full of snow.
It was an awkward feat, to rub stinking, poisonous dung off of you while still keeping an eye on the one who'd flung it. But she managed. All but hissing, she picked her bow back up, and her fallen arrow.

She really. Really was starting to understand where Mathilda's rage came from. Mostly against the poop. Getting hit with poop over and over was making her thoughts of finding a safe place for the birds to live... kinda go out the window. But not. She swore. Just.
Ok. This one. She was quickly losing her guilt against fighting this bird.

When the bird flung the freaking poop again, she was ready. Still got splattered a bit--ew--but Tara managed to ignore the disgust long enough to fire off her arrow this time.
It was a clean, hard shot, and she was rather pleased by the result. It cut right into the creature's chest. Left, this time. A final screech... and the thing fell from the sky. It landed in the snow in an ungraceful heap, and Tara let out a breath--only to gag when she caught wind of the s**t on her.... ugh!

She didn't have any interest in collecting more dung--no thanks--and after she finished cleaning herself off... well. Tara didn't feel the need to poke around the bird's body at the moment. She said only quick words of thanks to the bird for it's aid in her learning to master her weapon. A slow work in process, to be very sure...
But if she kept this up? She was definitely seeing improvement. It just... would take time. Time she was finding herself more, and more willing to devote. Such a thought made her track back into the warmth of the hotel, and relative safety, a rather light, pleasant one. Especially once she got all the dung off her. Yay!
