Quote: This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested! A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung. Hit points: 60 Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked. If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Rory was still feeling pretty good as she trudged through the snow. She had defeated one of those bird things on her own and was still running on the adrenaline. She felt like she could take on a swarm of those things and still come out on top! She did a little dance and laughed until a movement made some of her scratches twinged. "Ow." Okay maybe she wasn't as unbreakable as she felt. She would have to see about these wounds when she got to the hotel. She was definitely becoming a glutton for punishment, that much was sure. If she disliked fighting them so much, well then. Why'd she keep going outside? Still, there Tara was, slowly edging out through the snow, bow in hand and strung, expecting more of the birds to show up.
Of course, she was surprised to see another Chosen out here. She lifted a hand, trying to catch the girl's attention as she drew near. "Hey, you alright out here?" Tara tried not to yell--that there were even moving bodies out there would be enough to attract the birds' attention. She could already hear some of the birds' cries in the distance, getting closer.
[INT 20 + 15 = 35 ...g'damn Tara, if you have to show off, do it with your weapon...]

Rory rolled her shield arm as she looked around the white abyss. Now she knew where the term 'snow blindness' came from. The sun shining off the fluffy stuff was terrible. Just then, she heard a voice nearby and turned to see another Chosen trying to get her attention. With a smile, she waved her free arm and called out in reply. "Hey! I'm alright. You?" She winced; that was a little louder than she intended. She hoped none of those monsters came after her. She could maybe fight one off. It seemed luck still wasn't anywhere near her. She could hear some of those things coming nearer. Slogging her way through the snow toward the other Chosen, Rory hefted her shield into a more comfortable position on her arm. "I think we're about to be entertaining some feather visitors in a minute. Wanna team up?" she gave the other woman a sideways smile. Tara smiled warmly to the other Chosen--if only after giving the shield a wide-eyed look. She hadn't seen someone use one before, though had seen them on the table before going through the Hearth. "I'm alright. Little sore from all the fights but... nothing I can complain about." She did notice the other woman wincing, and hoped she was ok--she didn't have any medical supplies on her, but instead they were back in the hotel. The smile was met with a bright one, and she nodded with a sigh. "I'm Tara. And... yeah. Sounds like a perfect plan to me."
The dark-haired woman turned a bit, eyes narrowing towards three oncoming, glinting shapes. "Incoming," she murmured, pulling out her first arrow and notching it. Pulling back the string, the bow went taunt in her hands, one eye shut as she aimed. "Great... three incoming," she clarified, before exhaling and letting her arrow fly.
It clipped the wing of one of the birds, the creature letting out a screech in its pain. Another had managed to shoot one of its metal feathers at her, and Tara winced as she felt it cut the back of her hand. Just like that, the match was on.

She grinned. "Me, too. These things are a menace. No wonder they called us, right?" She smiled again; already her wounds weren't bothering her as much. At least enough for her to be able to fight and not be hampered by them. "Nice to meet you, Tara. I'm Rory." The other Chosen used a bow, which was probably going to be much more use against these birds. Not that she did so bad with just her shield before. She followed Tara's line of sight to see the three birds coming toward them. When she said she felt like she could fight a swarm of them, she wasn't being serious! She made a bit of a face, but Tara was already taking action and drawing her bow. The arrow hit a wing and Rory was confident that the two of them would be able to take these creatures on, no problem. "Nice shot," she said and waited until one of the birds got closer to throw her shield. She managed to knock one of them off course and laughed at its indignant shriek before moving to grab her shield from where it had landed. It's like she thought before--she was getting to meet a few of the Chosen due to the birds. So that was... one good thing, right? "We might have to make some extra use of your shield, Rory," she warned carefully--not wanting to spook the other woman, but... well. Tara was uneasy about facing so many after her last attempt with Jules.
Considering how well her first shot went, and how much of a hit Rory was able to make on another of the birds--to which Tara let out a whoop of cheer and an, "Awesome hit!"--she was feeling kinda confident though.
"Metal feathers, poisonous dung... hostile behavior... yeah, definitely a reason why we were called." Releasing another arrow, she tried to aim for the one she'd hit before. This time, she only managed to knock off a few of the feathers and piss the bird off. It swooped in, clawing at her arm with its metal talons, and though she managed to beat it back, her jacket had yet more holes it in. "Damn it!"

"Absolutely," she said and nodded. She hadn't planned on using her shield as a weapon until they stepped through the Hearth and into the battle without the chance to take a breath. She was glad she had still listening in combat training. Sliding her arm through the straps, Rory grinned back. She wanted to comment that they had this in the bag, but she didn't want to jinx their progress, either. "I haven't had any experience with their dung yet," she said. Which of course meant the next one coming aimed some right for her head. She yelped and threw her arm up to block. Unfortunately it was not her shield arm and it slid through the tears already in her coat to hit her skin. "Yikes!" When it came back, she blocked with the correct arm and shoved, managing to knock it away for a second. Tara winced to see the other woman getting some personal experience with the disgusting dung. "Use some of the snow if you can to get it off!" She took a few steps back in the snow, trying to keep her distance from the damn birds. One swooped at her again, and though she raised her arm to keep the thing from her head and face--getting yet more cuts on her hand--she managed to shove it back.
Enough that when she pulled back her string and shot her arrow, the strength of her shot and the proximity caused the arrow to shoot clear through the bird's body. The thing gave a screech before it fell to the snow, dead. Tara panted a bit, trying to catch her breath before looking towards Rory. "Got one!" Just two more, and they were both looking pretty scraggly for metal birds. Good.

"Thanks for the tip!" she said and bent down to rub some snow on her latest wound. She kept an eye on her surroundings while she cleaned the goop off and cheered when Tara managed to kill one of the birds. "Whoo! You go girl," she said and laughed. Despite the aches and pains coming from these fights, she had to admit it was kind of a rush. Something different from her job and her gardening. The split second she spent glancing down to make sure her arm was clean was all that was needed for a bird to swoop on her. She yelped as talons tangled in her hair and she fell backward into the snow trying to knock the thing off. Eventually she managed to swing her shield and strike it and the damn thing took some of her hair with it. Tara was startled to see Rory fall, and immediately moved over to help the other woman. "You ok?" She'd barely reached her though when one of the two remaining birds swooped down and caught her in the head. Yelping, she fell forward onto her knees, covering her head with her arms.
"Damn birds," she shouted, cussing and rubbing at her head. Sore, but no blood that she could tell. Getting back to her feet, she notched another arrow and tried to keep her wits about her.

"I'm good!" she said, waving her off. It looked like these birds had a penchant for attacking hair. When she was able to stand, she shooed the birds away from Tara's hair as best she could. "Are you okay?" she asked. The Chosen's next arrow missed, but Rory was ready and stepped in front of Tara to shove her shield forward as the bird came toward her. She could feel her shield vibrate with the impact. "They look like they're slowing down," she observed. "Will be," she huffed, offering a quick smile to Rory. "Thanks." Pulling out another arrow and letting it fly, she managed to knock the second bird out of the air. Permanently.
"Just one more." She felt guilty feeling good about it... but she reminded herself this was pretty close to hunting, and she was doing it to keep people safe. No harm. No foul. She should be proud of what she was doing. Or at least, that's the sort of mantra she kept repeating in her head to keep herself from freaking out over everything.

"No problem," she said with a tired smile. She was quite probably a little old for this. Hah. Her mother would have a fit if she said that out loud. Rory was only in her early thirties. She could totally handle this. And handle it she did as the last bird came at her. With a yell, she slammed her shield on top of it, and then while it was on the ground she hit it a couple more times. "Just for good measure," she said with a grin and sat back in the snow for a second. The cold felt good and numbed the ache starting in her bones again. "This is defense," she murmured, mostly to herself as she ran a hand through her hair. To Tara, she asked "Hey, who's your patron? Just out of curiosity." Tara let out a sigh of relief--both that the birds were down, and that she hadn't had to finish the last one off. Unstringing her bow and storing it under her arm, she moved over to one of the fallen avians. Taking another vial from her pocket, she managed to get a bit of its blood. Cleaning off the vial, she stored it away before moving towards the other woman.
"Artemis, actually," she answered with a small laugh. "You?" She looked down at the two of them, covered in cuts and bruises. "I've got bandages and stuff back inside the hotel. We might be able to find a fire, too!" Warm up, patch up. She eyed her jacket, wondering if she'd be able to patch that up as well...
