Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Tara had been walking through a section of the hotel when she heard the strange noises. They were scratching sounds, like she'd expect mice. Moving further down one of the halls, she missed the warning signs. Really, the very obvious signs. Maybe she was just tired. Maybe she was just getting too comfortable being in the hotel, expecting it to be entirely safe.
She turned to peek into one of the rooms--currently unoccupied--and just... There it was. Shattered glass on the ground, it's claws scratching at the window frame as it poked about. Tara's eyes went wide, and she screamed about the same time the bird did. She slammed the door shut before the avian could escape, and quickly strung her bow. It was then she realized the big warning signs. The halls had been fortified up through here, but the rooms... hadn't been. Not yet. Cussing, she opened the door back up, into the bird.
It managed to scratch her a bit, but she managed to get off a shot into the room, hearing the sound of metallic feathers hitting the ground as her arrow dislodged a few.

Trying to fight the avian from the doorway was an extremely odd situation. She managed to shove it back, and it swooped around the room, cawing and screaming, and Tara winced at how it kept hitting furniture without seeming to care. But perhaps its lack of focus was what helped her get the shot.
She'd opened the door a bit more to see more into the room, and though the bird managed to catch her with one of its feathers, Tara's arrow did a hell of a lot more damage when she fired. It struck the creature's back hard, piercing through it's side and knocking off a large chunk of metallic feathers. Not that it was down and out yet... but it was definitely a hurt bird at this point.

She'd gotten way too comfortable. She figured that, with the metallic bird hurt so, her shots would hit pretty easily in this cramped space. Yeah. About that. She'd tried to fire another shot, figuring the bird was... pretty much going to start being down for the count.
Which, would make sense, for how many feathers she'd knocked off of it. Ha.
The damn thing sent a volley of metal feathers her way, knocking her bow out of her hand, the arrow flying uselessly in the wrong direction. Cursing, Tara ducked and grabbed her weapon again, re-stringing an arrow on and almost sure she saw the damn bird laughing...

Well, joke was on the bird. Sort of. Though more slices, cuts and bruises, were forming on her hands from the creature trying to knock her bow out of her hand, and trying to get past her through the door, Tara managed to push it back enough to aim and fire another arrow.
This time, the arrow hit home, making the bird scream and giving Tara a strange sense of triumph. She still didn't like doing this but... it was getting easier. The talk with Mathilda helped to put her focus better in the fights, and her moral disputes were... well. She could figure them out later.

The door was useful to duck behind each time she needed to get another arrow into place and take a quick breath to steady herself. Though she could hear the wood at her back creaking and cracking from the bird's attacks, for now it was holding up. It was all Tara could ask for.
One of the feathers sliced her cheek a bit as she opened the door again, taking aim and knocking more off the bird's wings. The bird had mostly demolished the contents of the room at this point, and it landed without a scrap of grace into the remains of the bed. Still breathing, still fighting. But... definitely on it's last leg.

Stepping fully into the room, Tara took a final breath as she lifted her bow and notched arrow one more time. She... didn't hesitate this time to shoot the bird. It was more suitable to end it's suffering fairly than let it suffer extensively. It wasn't easy. But it was starting to make a little sense to her.
The bird wasn't... a natural one. It didn't make its existence any less valuable, far as she was concerned, but. The talk with Mathilda did help her. Steadied her. Made it less of a moral debate as she loosed that final arrow. Pierced the bird's heart. It passed away seconds later, no more pain and rage. Slowly, she looked around the room, grimacing at the damages. The window was broken in, and clearly would need to be barred up to make sure more of the birds didn't come through.

Tara managed to fold up the bird in the linens the bird had... torn up to hell. Tossed the whole bundle out the window. From there, she was able to use some of the other linens to act as strip ties. Breaking down some of the already sliced and broken furniture, and tying them together with the scraps of cloth, she managed to form a barrier of sorts in the window using the various debris.
Wasn't perfect, but she hoped by putting some of the broken, spiked points out the window that it would deter any attempts by the birds from coming in. Or, if they did get in, have already lost a few of their feathers to give people openings. She sighed a bit as she finished, making a note to try and look through the rest of the hall and rooms. Make sure that more wouldn't be coming through. That was the last thing they needed around here... ugh.
