this isn’t the first time

They were sitting down and taking a breather after Jeremiah had given Chris another lesson on magic. The older man is sitting under a pavilion on a table in the park within other ashdown and taking a drink of water from a bottle (because they had smartened up and started bringing some provisions).

"You remember how old Heliodora said she was?" he asked suddenly after a moment of silence and a break away from whatever their previous conversation was. Of course Chris probably did but he could think of no better lead-in for what he was going to talk about.

Jeremiah has recruited Chris to help him with his garden. There’s a wide selection of things he used to make tea with and he had promised to let the young man have his pick of some of them since they were ready.

"When I was little," he said with a chuckle, "my mother would talk to me about the language of flowers. 'A true gentleman' she said, 'would not give a flower without meaning.'"

overwhelmed

The silver-haired detective was out sitting in the sun on the back porch. Hellbine was curled in his lap, a warm lump that was never far away from his owner. Not since he had come back from other ashdown the last time.

Not since his mind had been overwhelmed.

He had a cup of cold tea, a special brew Eve had shared with him that helped eased the residual soreness in his throat (and deal with the pain sometimes that came and went along his back), while he jotted down notes about what everything could mean. As time passed it was less a jumbled mess but there was still so much he had to work through but this spot was warm and sunny for the time being.

It would do him good to be outside instead of hiding inside as he had been while Algie was prepping for the new school term.

"Um," Chris blinked, staring at Jeremiah. He hadn't expected the question at all and it threw him off guard, threw is mind for a minute. "Not off the top of my head, but certainly older than the 18 years I thought she was."

He took a long sip of his waterbottle, giving a curious look to Jeremiah. "Why, by the way? I figure you would know better than me."

Chris is more than happy to help Jeremiah with his garden - he knows more than Chris and while Chris can glean information from books and phonecalls with his mother, he prefers to find the information in person. Being able to watch what someone was doing has always made it easier for him to learn and regardless of that, Jer had a nice garden and Chris wanted to make a few more varietys of tea. Maybe ship them off to his sister.

"Really?" Chris said, looking at Jer. "Did you learn the meanings of them? I know some meanings.. but not a lot. Mostly the common ones and then some weird ones."

overwhelmed

Chris was... upset to say the least. Upset enough to abandon his school planning and come tromp all the way out to Jer's house, somehow managing to leave Bergamot behind with minor resistance.

It may have been the combination of glare and excessive worry that he decided it would have been, for once, wise to stay behind.

Chris had said his hellos to Algie and left him to his own prep after he directed him to where Jer was. Now he stood by the porch door, standing there watching before finally opening it.

"I thought you said to be careful in Other Ashdown."

He sounded and looked like an angry, if concerned son.

this isn't the first time

"Thirty-two thousand years at least," he replied back easily. "Possibly more but that was what was said." Jeremiah rolls his shoulders, the water bottle set beside him.

"I was asking because it kind of leads into what I'm about to tell you." His eyes cut to look at Chris out of the corner. "That this is likely not the first time we've done this."

"Pick one out," Jeremiah said with a chuckle, gesturing towards the garden. "I'll tell you what it means." It was, in all honesty, why he was very particular about sending flowers to people. There was meaning to everything, even in how it was arranged.

"My father did not agree with it but his idea of what a gentleman should be and my mother's were drastically different. I'm sure you can tell which one I listened to."

but no really, you can pick some kind of flower that would grow well in a garden and jer will tell chris the meaning, XD <3.

Jeremiah's head tilted to look towards the door, mostly because Hellbine had perked up. His habit of getting lost in thoughts was far, far worse with the visions hitting him without him realizing it. Never mind that sleep was not always a respite either.

When he heard the open of the door, he turned a little, and then Chris spoke and-

That tone with that look.

Algie would certainly be impressed.

"I did," he admitted and then sighed. The detective lieutenant looked tired and frayed around the edges. There were circles under his eyes and he was clearly run down. "... but I also did not quite anticipate that this was part of the price for using my favor."

"Ah," Chris said, blinking slightly. That was the number he was missing and it was well. He didn't really like to think about it really, it was hard enough to process Other Ashdown already at times. Blearily, he realized he probably hadn't really processed it yet, but in due time.

"What do you mean?" Chris asked after a moment of silence, giving Jeremiah a confused look. "I don't.. I don't remember doing this any other time."

Chris smiled, his eyes crinkling at the edges as he cast his eyes over the variety of flowers. Jeremiah's garden was beautiful and he had enough to choose from, but his eyes fell upon a fragrant white bloom. Gardenias.

"What does a gardenia signify?" Chris asked, turning to Jeremiah. He wondered if it did signify anything - from what he knew of the blossoms, they withered quickly and wouldn't be much use in a bouquet. "I found that my mother's advice was better than my father's as well."

Jeremiah clearly didn't look that well. He looked about as well as Chris did on a three day streak of no sleep and well, there had obviously been a discussion about that before (although Chris was still was going strong on the whole don't sleep for days thing, just better about it now).

Chris still couldn't help but feel upset, but slightly angry even with Jer so low. It was really all a cover for his fear, but it was easier to be upset than afraid. Better.

"You didn't... you didn't get a warning? Or anything?" He asked, slightly sulkily. He knew Other Ashdown didn't play like that and it was a stupid question. "What favor anyways? That sounds like a bad idea, even to me, to have a favor with that place."

"Neither do I but we have at some point." Jeremiah rolled his shoulders, looking over to Chris and then sighing. "Or perhaps this is your first but I highly doubt it." A hand was flicked off to gesture to other ashdown, to this place, to everything they were caught up in.

"I met a man that was on fire and he knew me, Chris. Spoke like he had known me before and he was not the first to hint at such."

Gardenias were not something easily grown either but much like the orchids that were in his garden, a flower that had bloomed in July and now was no longer in bloom, it was worth the work. "You're lovely," he said with a bit of a smirk, "is what they frequently mean but there's little things as well. Friendship, trust, protection as well ... You could put them in a bouquet and with other flowers make something that has a much grander message."

There was a hum as he took a clipping and laid it aside. "My father never gave advice so much as tried to pass down edicts. He was not a man who took no for an answer."

"If by warning you mean he tried to talk me out of it ..." Jeremiah sighed, gesturing for Chris to have a seat next to him. Hellbine stretched in his lap a moment before he curled back up sleepily. "That was the extent of the warning but that also seemed like I was asking about something even more important to know."

His shoulders lifted into a slight shrug but Jeremiah was alright with the frustration; the upset and the anger were understandable. The guilt of what he was putting Algie through- That was something that was gnawing at him daily.

"My friendship with Sunny Shore for anything I wanted, any time I wanted it." Jeremiah looked up at Chris. "Not that I knew that that was the cost when I agreed to the deal. Then I probably would not have taken it and told him to stuff it." He definitely was tired if that was the extent of his insult.
