Catherine walked back to the hotel steely eyed, she had just downed one of the metal birds outside and was returning to patch herself up before heading out into the fray again. She sighed as she pushed through the entrance doors, looking for a spot she could use to bandage herself up. I hope this doesn’t become part of my daily routine … I could do without getting sliced up every time I go outside.
Honestly though it wasn’t all that bad, or at least, it could be a whole lot worse. The blessing she had from Athena made wounds that should be incapacitating mere scratches and bruises, the gauge in her leg for example should be making her limp in a major way, but it was more of a flesh wound than it could (SHOULD) have been. She found an open spot next to a man who was dressing his own wounds, and got to work cleaning up the cut on her cheek. The leg wound though, that would require some more supplies than she had after arriving at the hotel in pretty rough shape … She turned to the man and asked with a helpless smile, “Sorry, you wouldn’t happen to have an extra bandage in there would you? I’m afraid I ran out earlier.”[WC: 217, Total: 217]

Fighting a swarm had been dramatically more difficult than fighting just one bird. It was odd, how they all seemed to think the same thing at the same time. It was more like bees than birds. It was possible, he thought, that some omniscient being was controlling the birds itself, like a god or otherwise terribly powerful being. Maybe he was just thinking with bias because he'd only recently learned that several gods actually did exist. Oh well. They'd find out sooner or later.
He had sat down to patch himself up a bit and recover after the fight. Presumably someone would be going out again later that he could tag along with. Maybe between them all they'd cause a decent dent in the bird population.
Most of his wounds were superficial, save the one decent gash on his arm that was already cleaned and wrapped. Everything else seemed to be in un-wrappable places like his face and arms, so when a woman sat down beside him and asked for bandages he was happy to oblige. He offered what he could spare considering his plans for the future and gave a soft smile. He noted her emblem.
"Athena, huh?" he asked, nodding his chin toward it. Hopefully she'd be a bit more friendly than his tiny fighting partner. She seemed as such. wc: 223 total: 223

Cat smiled to the man as she took the offered bandages, “Thanks.” She looked down to her locket etched with the symbol of her goddess, “Oh, yes! I’m Catherine, by the way.” She didn’t immediately notice his insignia, but with his shaved head and calm demeanor in this maelstrom she could harbor a few guesses, “How about you- you seem to have the look of a Zeus or Ares Chosen?” She looked to her leg wound and removed one of the wipes intended for sterilizing wounds from her pack, and cut a cleaner rectangle from the surrounding material. The injuries from these birds were painful, but at least with their metal feathers the cuts had clean edges. With any luck this would heal up neatly, and given how remarkably quickly the Chosen seemed to heal, she hoped that would be sooner rather than later- she wanted to do as much as she could to help out these people and take out as many birds as possible. With the pant leg more cut away she applied the bandage and continued rummaging in her pack, she really should just dump everything out and reorganize it so the contents made sense to her. Brian smiled and nodded, then set back to treating his own wounds. He'd gotten beyond the point of blessed bumps and bruises and straight into retreating territory by the time those two men showed up to save their skin. You didn't feel the pain initially, no, but boy did it start to ache in the down-time. He winced as he tested the wound on his forehead.
"Yeah," he replied then, a little impressed, "Zeus. Am I really that predictable?" He found that he had trouble defining anyone by God unless he could see their emblem, except maybe for Aphrodite on a good day. "I'm Brian. It's a pleasure. I'd shake your hand, but..." He glanced down at his own digits, caked with blood as they were.
"Have you been out in it since the initial rush?" he asked. He'd gone out twice himself and hadn't been so wounded as when he had returned outside to fight again. Getting to the hotel had been a cakewalk.wc: 178 total: 401

Cat laughed lightly, “Honestly, you had the look of military or law enforcement about you, which could go either way.” She found a cloth in her pack and extended it to Brian along with a canteen of water, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”Moving the cloth had revealed another batch of bandages tucked into one corner of her pack, “Are you kidding me, how could I have missed these earlier?” She took out the offending bandages and motioned towards the hotel doors with them in hand, “Yeah, I got pretty injured on the way here, but after helping to fortify the place I ventured outside again and take down one of those beasties.”[WC: 114, Total: 531]

Brian chuckled and let his head fall back slightly. He supposed there was a reason he was never asked to act as under-cover in the event of a sting. Was he really that easy to call? He thought he might be, but that made it all the better for civilians waiting for help, right?
"Ex-military police officer," he responded then, still grinning. He accepted the cloth and lifted his own canteen to show that he didn't need to steal hers. He wiped at his hands with the cloth and found it only marginally useful. Hey, at least it was better than nothing. "How about you?" Cat was much less easy to call. Something intellectual, though, he'd bet.
"Me too. One of them was a real struggle. I'd swear I had it almost down and all of a sudden it was dodging and striking like a maniac. I did get it down, though. Finally. Then tried to go after a swarm with uh..." He motioned generally out toward the others. "I don't know her name, but we almost had to retreat. On the bright side, I'm getting better with a bow."wc: 204 total: 605

Cat smiled with a shrug and took a gulp of water from her canteen, “So I hit the nail on the head then, eh? Military and police!” She thought back to before this whirlwind madness of being Chosen started and sighed with a far-away look to her eyes. A faint smile tugged at the corners of her mouth as she spoke, “I was a teacher, 6th grade. Feels like I just started my career and then all this happened. I really miss it too- working with the kiddos every day and teaching them so much more about subjects they already thought they knew. They just have such quirky personalities and they’re old enough to get my sense of humor. Sure it could be challenging at times, but nothing at all like this...”She nodded at Brian’s remarks, “Thankfully the one I found wasn’t too much trouble, I can’t imagine facing off alone against a group of those things. Glad to see you made it back triumphantly after all. I’m noticing that too, I was part of an archery club in college and kept up with it even after graduating, but facing off against actual moving targets is terrifying and using a bow is nothing like shooting skeet.”[WC: 207, Total: 738]grasshopper pie I actually do have a monster thread that I started, but never actually posted in if you want one more chance at fighting a small swarm together.

Brian's brow furrowed for a moment. "Was?" Why "was?" He had specifically asked about day jobs, being half-unwilling to give his up, and had been assured that the Hearth would, eventually, allow him to continue his work, or even that he could still like at home. Somehow he felt like telling Cat this in the middle of a life-or-death situation wasn't appropriate, however. He laughed then, and his concern dissolved.
"I don't think anything is 'like this!'" he said, "I've seen awful things, and I've had weapons drawn on me, and it's still nothing like this! Giant metal birds with toxic s**t..." He shook his head. "Oh, err. Sorry. Didn't mean to cuss." He poured a bit of water from his canteen on his hands to wash them, even knowing that he was going to be going back out into the thick of it.
"Really? I was on the archery team in high school. I didn't go to college, but, Athena," he smiled and gestured to Cat, "It was a long time ago, though. It took me a while to remember how to do it at all. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for some sort of firearm on that table."
Alethryia It won't count as XP but if you want to we can, just for the heck of it. I also wouldn't mind just saying they did it. Whatever you'd like!

grasshopper pie Just saying we did works for me- I could do without rolling a million more die! She looked to Brian with a frown, “Well, it’d be kind of hard teaching right now with living in a strange pocket of magic and teleporting all over the place. It just takes so much to teach, and not just the day spent in the classroom, I’d stay every night until at least six o’clock developing curriculum and planning awesome lessons for my students. Maybe I can look into online teaching, or being a home school support teacher when we can return to some sense of normalcy, but a full-year contract working Monday through Friday- I had to let mine go when I came here; can’t exactly put in for sick leave for an unknown duration.”She listened to Brian with rapt attention, she didn’t usually have the chance to hear from someone with actual work experience using weapons but let out a brief chuckle at his apology. “No worries, really. You should hear my sister- she has the mouth of a sailor!” She nodded with a smile, “I always really enjoyed school and in my senior year just sort of discovered this love for teaching, so college was going to be a necessity.” She had finished reorganizing her bag at this point- no more lost bandages for her! She closed up the pack and sighed wistfully, “No kidding, I can only imagine how effective a rifle would be out there.”[WC: 231, Total: 959]

"Definitely," Brian agreed. He wasn't sure if he was going to be able to keep working himself once they got that Hearth set up, but he was going to try. His days off, at least, were days off, not days for making lesson plans and grading papers. He respected teachers.
She made him laugh slightly at the "sailor" comment. It was more of an armed-forces sort of vocabulary in general. The whole "sailor" thing must have come about before that became prevalent.
"You know, honestly? I'd be afraid of ricochet. Ricochet and avalanche." He looked out toward the entrance to the hotel and shook his head. His hands were clean and he tossed the used rag into a nearby bin. "As much as I'd like to mortar these things, of course." He smiled to Cat and nodded. "So. What do you say to healing up a bit and heading back out into the thick of it? Two is much better than one."

grasshopper pie I'm going to call that a wrap so we can count the rp towards xp now, also last day for wrapping up epic rps. xd Hmmm, Cat hadn’t thought about how much louder guns were than her bow and the ramifications there may be from that additional noise. It was silly of course, she’d been shooting at ranges with her family plenty of times and always worn ear protection plus in every zombie movie and TV show ever guns always made enough noise to draw in more zombs- but she hadn’t considered what that noise would do to the heaps of snow here. “I guess this is how you can tell I’m a novice marksman, ricochet and avalanches never would have crossed my mind.”Cat nodded in return, “Yeah, it keeps on amazing me how quickly we heal now as Chosen, the cuts I had from getting to the hotel from the lodge are already gone for the most part. Plus, I’d have much greater confidence taking down a group of these birds alongside an ex-military police officer.”[WC: 153, Total: 1,112]
