This enemy can be fought solo!

A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung.

Hit points: 25
Damage: 5 each time attacked

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

The next time the hotel was quiet, Zan didn't bother fighting his brilliant impulse to go back outside. He nearly retreated when he saw the bird hopping around by itself, but when no others joined it and he managed to sidle up to within five feet of its back with little effort, the Chosen leapt forward with a triumphant laugh and jammed his dagger into its back. The blade sparked on contact and it didn't sink in very far, but the frantic way in which the beast fluttered out of his grasp was downright comical.

He wasn't a murderer or anything, but these birds were like giant, glittering cockroaches. Zan wanted nothing more right now than to exterminate them all.

It wasn't long before the beast got its bearings and then it was up, winging past and lashing out in terrible silence. Zan made up for it all as the creature struck, yelping when talons made a grab for his hair. A question for later: Would the gods' tokens protect his carefully cultivated locks? He had a feeling the answer was an unequivocal no, which meant he'd be taking matters into his own hands.

For now Zan ran for the bird just as it swooped low and swung his dagger wide, delivering just about as much pain as he had the first time, if its reaction was any indication. He supposed all of that practice had paid off, even if he'd felt like an idiot pursuing it.

He lamented the lack of a hood on his coat as he swung again, trying to shield his hair with a forearm simultaneously. This time his dagger caught the bird directly in the center of its chest and it opened its beak in a silent scream. An odd ichor trickled from the wound onto Zan's hand, and he tightened his grip to compensate.

When the weapon was pulled free once more, Zan almost danced away, his smile broad as the creature remained aloft for a handful of seconds then fell slowly into the snow. He stood still, watching it. He probably should have run.

The bird rose to its feet almost supernaturally quickly, charging Zan and driving all of its weight into his calves and shins. He fell forward on top of it, riddling the creature with shallow knife wounds that failed to slow it down. All the while it continued to run into his legs, and eventually Zan lost his balance completely to its forward assault, rolling to one side and landing in a bank of pristine snow.

His foe wasted no time going straight for the part of Zan's person he had been guarding most fiercely. His hair.

Zan kicked and cursed, trying to hold mostly still while also discouraging the bird from doing anything rash. He felt its beak engulf the bundle of hair at his nape and he froze, envisioning himself once again stuck with the dorky, shorn locks he'd worn in high school.

He would not allow that to happen.

He rolled, parting with enough hair to elicit a sting, but no larger a number of them than he might lose daily in the shower. The band of colorful, braided string that held his ponytail in place was sacrificed to the metallic eagle's claw, but he could get another one of those easily enough. Zan was free, and if the rest of this fight went this way, the bird would soon not be.

With a shout that escalated in volume the longer it went on, Zan scrambled for the bird, violently wrestling with it in the snow. He thought once more about how he'd never killed anything bigger than a roach in his life as he peppered the creature with stab wounds, pausing only when he felt it relax in his arms. He supposed he'd killed something as large as an eagle now.

Zan sat unmoving in the snow for several minutes before he heard muffled flapping overhead. It would probably be a good idea to get inside.

Even after coming to that conclusion, Zan didn't make any move toward the hotel until his a** was iced through and he could barely feel his fingers. It was only then that he shifted, tensing when the bird did too. It was still alive. He leaned over it, and after watching it breathe for a minute or two, he drew his dagger across its throat. All this time he had barely gotten any blood on his skin or clothes, but as he made his cut, dark ichor spilled out over his blade once again, coating his fingers more thoroughly than it had during the fight. He had been too preoccupied to notice the tingle the first time, the urge to wipe it off onto the snow intense, but instead he opened the pouch beneath his coat and found a row of professional-looking vials near the top. Perfect. He removed one, popped off the stopper, and filled it with blood as well as he could.

Finally, after cleaning his hands and knife in the snow, Zan ventured back inside to see what he could do next.
