Quote: This enemy can be fought solo! A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung. Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

During the fortification process Lawrence found himself in one of the upstairs rooms with a broken window. He was intending to board it up but before he could there was a strange sound and he found himself face to face with one of the birds from outside. Up close he could see just how unnatural the thing was and knew that this was at the very least an opportunity to deal with one up close and personal without witnesses.
In short he could be a brutal as he wanted.
Drawing the dagger he narrowed his eyes at the creature and leapt forward, it let out a squawk of surprise and pecked him as hard as it could.

The creature flapped violently free of the pale man's grip and lashed out with its much more potent talons, raking right along his arm. He hissed through his teeth and swung out again with the dagger but this time only managed to clip one of its legs, not enough to do any significant damage to it.
But there was an unerring focus in the way he eyed the bird, tinged with an almost feline curiosity.

If he was someone else maybe he'd have run for some backup, but as it was once Jan decided he was going to do something it was very difficult to dissuade him from it. This was one of those things and he'd gotten a feeling from the way things had started out that he could do this .
The swipes he'd taken didn't even bother him or slow him down, pain a dull secondary to getting this bird to die.

Ducking behind the bed he narrowly avoided a very disgusting splatter of something only to have to dash across the room and be struck very hard with a set of flapping and angry wings. In the haze of focus he wondered if anyone else could hear him clattering around or wondered what he was up to.
He was just fine right now on his own, able to see the creature start to flag in strength much quicker than he was. Birds were fragile, if he could get a wing, neck or the sternum it would be all over.

The bird crashed into a wall as it tried to fly with wings hacked half to bits by the keen little blade of the dagger and Jan was after it, his expression blank. He seized it up in his arms and once again ignored the flailing legs that caught his sides.

No longer able to fly or escape the bird seemed to realise that it was absolutely doomed and ceased struggling in his arms. The follow up with the dagger was perhaps a little too enthusiastic and ended up with him with a head which was no longer paired with its body and a twitching oozing and very likely dead thing in his arms.
With all the pride of a housecat gone hunting he took this as a reason to leave the room he'd been in and return to his hotel room dead bird in tow.
