Tara had lingered a bit in the hotel once she'd finally reached it. Relieved to be in a warmer area, relieved to be away from those damned birds. But once she felt her fingers again, and after being sure that the survivors she'd helped to the hotel were safe, she'd gone back out. Partly to look for other survivors, partly to try and see if she could begin to look around. Figure out what was going on.
She hadn't exactly gotten far through the snow when she spotted one of the massive birds. Glinting feathers, the size and rough shape of an eagle. Tara gulped, pulling out her bow and notching an arrow. It was definitely coming her way, and Tara moved carefully through the snow, trying to keep herself from falling in the deep white not-so-fluffy stuff.
As it got closer, she blanched. Bronze beak. Metallic feathers. "These aren't even real birds," she gasped, staring at it. "The hell are these things, machines?" Not that it... looked it but...

Once Rob reached the hotel, he gave himself a minute to catch his breath, and his composure. Those bloody birds… He shuddered as he settled the civilians he'd managed to collect between the lodge and the hotel in, making sure they were okay. Luckily, all they were was shaken. So was he, truth be told. What the hell was going on here? He spotted a familiar form head out into the snow. "Tara?" he said to himself. Where was she going? Setting down his pack of supplies, he followed the young woman outside. Almost immediately he spotted one of the huge birds heading for her. He stopped, squinting against the glare of the snow, and finally got a good look at the thing. Its beak didn't look right -- neither did its feathers. They looked… metallic. "What the bloody s**t is this?" Brandishing his greatsword with both hands, he made his way closer, ready for battle. Her arms had been pretty steady--something she was in a bit of awe about, and incredibly pleased with. The closer the large bird got, the easier a target it was going to be, right? That was the logic she held onto, letting her muscles lax a little so she wasn't pulling so hard on the bow the whole time.
Movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention, and she broke her gaze from the metallic eagle. Blinking a bit, she was startled by the familiar figure approaching. "Rob? G-get back, there's another one-- shite!"
The metallic bird screeched as it dove, and Tara loosed the arrow. Far too late--she'd looked away too long, damnit!--and the bird managed to avoid getting even a scratch on it. It's metal talons cut her coat as Tara ducked down, half-smothering herself in the snow before pushing herself back up and trying to move a few paces away, taking out another arrow. She gritted her teeth, promising herself she wasn't going to look away from an enemy again. She did see that Robin had a sword... she just hoped he knew how to use it ok against these guys.

"Tara!" Rob yelled as the bird-thing swooped down at her. "Look ou-" His warning came too late, and as she turned back to the bird and loosed her arrow, the creature slashed at her with razor-sharp talons. He charged for her as fast as he could manage in the shin-deep snow, wishing he'd picked a smaller sword as he was having trouble keeping the weapon from flapping all over the place carrying it with one hand and balancing himself with the other. As he approached, the bird looked up with desperately wrong eyes, and with a blood-curdling screech lifted itself into the air on metallic wings and dove at him. Well, he'd accomplished one of the things he'd intended to: he'd gotten the bird off Tara. Unfortunately, he miscalculated the timing and didn't have enough time to ready the greatsword for a blow. Swinging it ineffectually with one hand, he found himself under attack by the monster. Eyes wide to see the avian quickly turn from her to attack Robin, she hesitated as she held up her bow and arrow. She didn't... she didn't want to hit Rob! But the freaking bird wasn't giving her enough of a choice in terms of trying to aim for it...
Taking a breath, and exhaling it to steady herself, Tara closed an eye and aimed. In perhaps her best show of archery yet, the arrow was loosed and flew towards the metallic eagle. The bird screeched as the arrow hit home, lodging into it's back.
The thing was furious as it lifted up. Tara's victorious smile didn't last long--she had to hold up her bow in self-defense as the eagle tried to slash at her with its razor sharp wings. Her hands got nicked, but nothing as bad as she'd feared as she shoved the bird away from her to grab another arrow.

Once more Rob was in a fight for his life. The monstrous bird was too close for him to swing the greatsword; the best he could do was try to pound the creature with the sword's heavy pommel as it scratched and bit at his face with its bronze beak. "s**t!" he swore. "s**t s**t s**t!" The weight of the monster knocked him over and he landed on his back, thrashing in the snow as he fought the bird-thing. He nearly dropped his sword, but managed to hold on and continued to fight as best as he could. The bird suddenly squawked loudly and lifted up. "b*****d!" Rob spat after it. As it once more flew at Tara he saw an arrow sticking out of its back. Good girl, she got a shot off. Now if he could just… Struggling to his feet, he took a rage-filled swing at the bird. The blade of the sword glanced harmlessly off the back of the monster, doing nothing more than dislodging a few metallic feathers. Tara managed to back up a bit further, even as the eagle kept clawing at her hands and arms--a few more scratches forming on her forearms as the creature tore up a bit more of her coat.
It bounced between her and Rob, and though she felt horrible for how the creature went back to attacking him... she took aim again, gritting her teeth when she saw Rob fall back. "G-get back, Rob!" And what? Go back to the hotel? She figured that wouldn't go well.
Loosing another arrow, she was relieved to see it find the mark--the area where Rob's sword had just knocked off a few of the metallic feathers. The unguarded flesh of the avian was easy for her arrow to sink into, making the creature scream.

The bird flew at Rob again, screaming as it raked at his face with its talons. Raising an arm to protect himself, he flailed at it with his sword -- then it shrieked as Tara's arrow found its mark in the exposed flesh his glancing blow had left. He managed to shove it away, but it went to dive at Tara again. He had about had enough. Taking a deep breath, he grasped the hilt of the greatsword with both hands and swung a mighty, adrenaline-fueled blow. The long blade of the sword broke through the metallic feathers covering the bird, knocking several of them loose, and buried itself in the flesh underneath. He kept a firm grasp on the hilt, not wanting the creature to wrest it out of his hands. It flailed and screamed as it struggled to free itself, wings flapping violently. "Take that, you bloody b*****d!" Rob shouted as he wrestled with the thing. It finally freed itself and fell to the ground shrieking in agony, its wings still thrashing as it tried once more to lift itself into the air. Ok, that sword was pretty neat. The eagle managed to swipe its razor feathers as it fell to the ground from Rob's strike, catching her arms and making her yelp. The creature screamed and fumbled in the snow. For a moment, Tara felt... bad for it.
Panting a bit, feeling a bit woozy from the adrenaline and her first real experience with combat, she lifting her bow once more. Her arms shook as she held the notched arrow back, swallowing. "...sorry, but it won't hurt any more now," she murmured to the creature. Shuttering, she loosed the arrow. It struck into the injury made by Rob's sword, sinking in deep. The eagle gave a final scream...
And then went still.
It... took a while for Tara to lower her weapon. She rubbed at her eyes, shivering a bit from the cold and the fight or flight instincts running crazy in her systems. She wasn't... this wasn't exactly typical for her.
"...a-are you alright?" She finally looked up to Rob, and slowly made her way through the snow towards him, red-rimmed eyes looking about his face and body for any sign of serious injury.

Rob eased his grip on the sword's hilt, knowing he'd given the bird a mortal wound. He watched Tara dispatch the flailing monster with one final arrow, and wondered what was going through her mind. She was one of Artemis's, after all; protectors of animals and nature. And despite the clearly supernatural nature of the eagle-thing, it was a living creature. His heart was still pounding in his chest even as the adrenaline from the battle drained from his system and he felt the cold again, on his face and his hands, bloody from the bird's beak and talons. He let the sword fall to the snowy ground and took a few steps toward her as she approached him. "I'm fine," he said, studying her scratched face. "Are you alright, love?" Before she had a chance to respond or fight, he gathered her in his arms and held her tightly. He needed it as much as he figured she did.

She photographed wildlife. Never killed them. She'd never even hurt a mouse before--at least not any she was aware of. Tara'd been the girl who cried when her family's cat brought home a dead critter, and here she was. Using the skills she'd been trying to learn, and so anxious to learn... to kill.
Tara promised herself she'd have a talk with Mathilda later about this, soon as she saw the other woman... and when they got back from the Alps? Tara figured she might have to have a word with the Headmaster... She was beginning to doubt if she was really a good fit for this. But then... if Artemis didn't want her harming these creatures, why didn't the goddess just... send a sign?
She tucked the thoughts away, about to answer Rob--they were both clearly not alright and both their questions were redundant as hell--when he pulled her over. Startled her, sure, but she made sure to not hit him with her bow, and closed her eyes, pressing her forehead to his shoulder and hugging him back tight. Her shoulders shook a little, and it took a hell of a lot to keep from just... breaking down and crying right there. But after a little bit she managed to calm down, and pulled back with a small smile on her face. Rubbing again at her eyes--this time with clear sign of tears--she laughed. "Thanks. I really needed that." Sniffling a bit, she looked at his bloodied face, and her scratched up arms and hands. "We'll have to patch ourselves up back inside..."
She looked back at the metallic creature. "I've never seen... or heard of anything like this before," she mumbled, moving over to it. The creature had emptied it's bowls as it had died, something that made her stomach churn for multiple reasons. But... she'd seen how some of the other birds had thrown the dung, and it didn't look--or smell ugh...--like normal bird feces. Taking a small vial from her pockets, she managed to scoop some up. "Might be able to run tests on it... or toss it at something to scare it off..."
[Tara got a vial of Poisonous Dung!]

Rob was glad Tara hadn't struggled against his hug. He had definitely needed it, to help himself calm down. He'd been in many a bar fight in his young life, but he'd never had to fight for his life before -- especially not against a monster. It really gave him pause. He knew he wasn't made for fighting and killing as his primary purpose; he wouldn't have been Chosen by Dionysus if that were the case. Still, there was something almost satisfying about taking out the creature. There was going to be a lot of deep thinking done once he got back to the Prytaneum. "Yeah, we must look a sight," he chuckled at her remark. "I left my supplies inside, so we can…" He trailed off as she went back to the bird-thing. Puzzled, he watched her scoop up a small vial-full of its dung. Then he smiled. Ever the naturalist, he supposed. Crossing the snow, he touched her arm. "Come on, let's go inside and patch ourselves up," he smiled. [Rob got nothing but the satisfaction of defeating the monster!]

Once she was sure everything was packed away, and after she managed to collect some of her arrows back from the bird, she stood, taking a breath. Pushing a smile on, she nodded to Rob, rubbing at her upper arms and wincing at the various cuts on her forearms. "Yeah, good plan. Maybe they've got some tea in there, too," she laughed.
Or at least a fire. Anything warm right now would be splendid. Tara moved over to Rob's side, linking an arm with his with a wince. "This... definitely wasn't what I was expecting when I signed up. I don't know what Dionysus told you... but Artemis said there'd be magic in my life if I accepted." She looked towards the fallen bird, and looked up to where more metallic avians swooped and harassed people, while they moved quickly to the shelter of the hotel. "Guess she wasn't kidding..."
