Mal was working with a sword again. He didn't like the feel of the thing in his hand, but it was the easiest weapon to deal with. No special training for a plain sword, just use the edge and point. Aim at your opponent (Mal could not get used to the word enemy) and go.

He'd discarded his suit jacket and tie; they were laying folded over the edge of a table, and he was working in his long-sleeved shirts, with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He needed to start running again, too, and at least there was a track.

It could be a lot worse, he was thinking as he swung and chopped air, getting his muscles used to the change in weight at the end of his arm. Finn could actually get upset enough to try to come find him. That'd be a damn pain in the butt.

Tara retrieved the arrows she'd shot into a training dummy, huffing at the inanimate object. Just another beginning dummy--she was a chicken when it came to the more advanced ones that actually shot you when you hit them--and even though she was getting more comfortable with firing the bow, it was occurring to her that she wasn't... well. Challenging herself. But going up against a dummy could only do so much, right?

She pondered that, eyeing the thing, and after a moment, sighed and put the training dummy away. Figured she could at least free up the sparring room she'd occupied for someone who wanted it more. Needed it more. Whatever.

Bow in hand, towel around her neck, and small quiver of arrows at her back, Tara figured she could just put everything away and head back to her dorm. It was then she noticed someone else was in the gym. A guy, older than her definitely, and wearing a suit. She blinked, standing there in her gym clothes she'd packed when she'd moved up there, amazed that he was comfortable enough in that to practice with a sword.

The idea came slowly, and even when it hit, Tara was hesitant to act on it but... after a few moments of fiddling with her bow and hopping foot to foot in unease, she finally worked herself up enough to plaster a smile on her face and approach the guy. Making sure she got into his line of sight, she waved with her free hand. "Hey! I'm Tara. Sorry to barge in but um... I was wondering if you might be up for sparring? I've been at it with the dummies for a while, and um... well. People are better than inanimate objects when it comes to learning, right?"

He paused, and considered her -- over the rims of his glasses. It was an assessing look, and then Mal smiled at her and it changed his face, took him from intimidating to something damn near welcoming. "Hi, Tara. I'm Mal. I-- well. I wouldn't mind sparring. I guess I've never tried a match between someone with a bow and myself, is the only thing I'm worrying about."

Not that he minded the idea too terribly much, really. "We could give it a whirl, though." It'd be good to know how to deal with it, if nothing else, and he tugged his shirt sleeve up a little higher on the one side. "No harm in trying, right?"

He nodded to the table where he'd left his suit jacket; his tie was there too, but he left his glasses on. If he was going to be sparring with someone who had a bow, he might as well keep them on. An eye hit was -- less than likely, honestly, and he'd like to be able to see what he was dodging.

He made some space in the area he was using and backed up until there was a decent interval of space between them. "When you're ready."
