Marisol was no longer interested in dummies as she entered the gymnasium and headed for a sparring room. She was far from proficient at either throwing stars or whips--although the latter seemed more intuitive--but it was time to get into another type of fight altogether. Melee. And frankly, while it may have been smarter to square off against a dummy, she needed the fear and the adrenaline of going against a live person. Even if the weapons weren't capable of hurting them. Safety was important but she'd be far more likely to figure s**t out if her life was in danger.

Rather than face off against someone she knew and liked--she'd just end up flirting with any of those three--she thought it'd add to the experience if she didn't know who her opponent was. This wasn't the movies where the enemy did a long introduction and promptly gave an exposition of their master plan. It was almost too bad, she'd just opt to be a sniper and take them out mid-way. As it was... Claws; she wasn't sure if she felt more like Catwoman, Wolverine, or Shredder.

She opened the door, then took a gander around to the few people loitering around. No one she knew, fortunately. Which meant any one of them would be a good opponent.

"Hey, anyone want to spar?" she called out and grinned, invitingly, to anyone who chose to look her way.

Sorry for the delay!

Catherine had been practicing with a longsword, trying to get back into the “swing” of things. It had been years since she tried out the medieval swordsmanship club at her university- yes she really was enough of a nerd to check it out- and it was always surprising to her just how heavy a sword actually was. She was starting to build her stamina, but it still made her nervous to practice with an actual sword- even if it was dulled- when all she had ever practiced with before was a mere training tool that held the same weight and shape as a traditional longsword.

So when the call came out for a sparring partner Cat looked her way, it would be a good opportunity to loose some of her anxiety- to spar against another person where you had to have confidence in your work so that you could avoid being hit by the other’s weapon. She balanced her sword against her shoulder and walked up to the other woman with a grin, “I’ll have a go.”

Amusement swept over her lips; of course someone with a badass sword would take up the offer. Claws seemed like a supremely horrible decision now. Oh well, she grinned, at least this would be far from boring.

"Try not to skewer me," Marisol teased; these were practice weapons. Death was unlikely to happen. At most a few scratches or bruises would pop up. Neither of which bothered her any.

"Any preference on who goes first?" she asked as she motioned to the open sparring room.

Cat has her intense face on. xp

Cat returned her comment with a laugh, “I don’t think skewered Chosen is on the menu.” When they entered the sparring room, Cat answered her question by launching a swing towards her.

It was something she was taught how to do in the club, go straight into the attack. Real swordsmanship wasn’t about fancy plays and quick parries, it was about being on the aggressive and refusing to give your opponent the opening they needed to hit you- the danger here being that her opponent wasn’t wielding another sword, but more nimble claws. In this case Marisol turned out to be the faster and her swing went wide, fully missing her opponent.

Holy sh--the thought wasn't even fully formed in head as she ducked, sliding down into a side lunge to avoid the non-lethal but still terrifying strike. Once the blade was overhead, she pushed her weight onto her left foot and used the momentum to strike. It hit but barely and she locked onto her opponent to see what she would do in return.

Cat let out a sharp breath as Marisol’s strike hit-- it was certainly no pleasure to take even a glancing blow and it left her determined to finish this fight sooner rather than later. She used the leverage from her stance to put her full body weight into her next attack, landing a solid strike this time and hoping to push her opponent off balance in the process.

The next attack was harsh and while she didn't find herself toppling over, it made it impossible to get anything more than a weak slash in. This battle wasn't going to last long at this rate--hell, if this had been anything other than practice, she might be dead. Jumping up to stand, she tried to bounce back to give herself a chance to avoid the next strike.

    Marisol's Health: 50 - 12 = 38 HP

Sorry dear, in your last post you subtracted 2 instead of 12, so Marisol will be at 32 HP after this hit.

She couldn’t let up, wouldn’t let up. In any real fights that might come their way combat would be lethal, and that was the purpose of this training- and of training so hard- to give them a fighting chance. It brought her back to the sparring she had done in her years getting her degree, the training was all-out, and that was the point of following traditional swordsmanship. It was brutal, but it was effective. She did her best to ignore the blow and continued to attack in hot pursuit, landing another blow.

Melee was a stupid idea, she decided as the distance did nothing to prevent the next blow from hitting her dead on. There was no one she was going to let this woman trash her without getting at least one good hit in. Without warning, she lunged forward, throwing her weight behind the attempt as her arm seemed to miss completely. At least until she pulled it back, body dropping back as the claws--though not at all sharp--scraped against the woman's skin.

    Marisol's Health: 38 - 6 = 32 HP
    Damage Dealt: Roll + 1 = 200% x 4 = 8 DMG

You seem to have stolen it from me!

Catherine didn’t even see the attack coming until her opponent had already withdrawn and it threw her completely off balance. She cried out as the claws hit and her swing was thrown- leading to an energy-wasting attack that went nowhere. So that’s what a real hit from those claws felt like? She would do her best to avoid receiving the full brunt of such an attack again.

A puff of breath escaped her in relief as the next attack missed her. It gave her a second to breathe at least, now that it seemed this was going to be a complete thrashing--mostly a thrashing maybe but not a complete one. Which meant she had to go on the offensive if she had any hope of getting even a little bit ahead.

Marisol threw herself forward while the momentum of the missed swing had her opponent disabled. She had an open window and she didn't waste time in debating it. No, she made a straight shot towards the woman's side and scratched like she was an angry cat, determined not to get caught.

    Marisol's Health: 32 - 0 = 32 HP

Never mind, it came back!

This time she could see the attack coming, bracing herself for the strike and using the momentum from her missed swing to come around full circle and bash the edge of the dulled sword against the woman’s chest and pushing her back to a “safe”, well safer maybe, distance.

She was breathing heavily and annoyed at hair that was starting to come loose from her french braid- plastering itself against her forehead. She swept her forearm against her head, using the sleeve to collect the sweat that had formed there and move the loose hairs from her eyes.

These practice weapons sure did hurt. The strike against her chest was nothing to scoff at and while she badly had the urge to rub at it, she knew she couldn't afford to. She had to rally because she was in trouble--swords against claws were hardly an even match--and honestly there was little way she wasn't going to lose this match. But she wasn't going to go out without leaving it all here.

Safe was such a subjective term. All the firm push did was give her the room she needed for a nice run up. She darted forward, sliding underneath the woman's stance and coming up behind her. With a grin she slashed at her exposed back before darting around the other side.

    Marisol's Health: 32 - 12 = 20 HP

Were we going to play this to 0 hp or just a really low number, like 5? Uggh, it's all or nothing with these dice for me. emotion_donotwant

Stupid, she had been stupid to think that her last hit would do anything but wind her opponent. She felt the blow to her back and cried out as her back arched instinctively away from the hit- how was her opponent still so fast? She swung to retaliate, but it was feeble really and Marisol easily dodged it.

She might be able to do more damage in a hit, but if her opponent kept getting in fast hits like that she was screwed. What’s more she could feel fatigue starting to creep in, her sword feeling heavier and heavier by the minute. How much stamina did she have after all?

She wasn't sure she'd ever been so glad to be short in her life. Okay she probably had been and in this case it wasn't a huge difference. If she had to guess she'd say there was maybe five inches or more between them but it aided her whenever she ducked or weaved. And she'd be damned if she didn't use it to her advantage.

The unexpected strike to Catherine's back had clearly taken the woman by surprise if her weak retaliatory swing was anything to go by. She pulled her far shoulder back to side step before sliding in and aiming an attack towards the woman's stomach. If she was lucky it would distract her opponent from hitting back; if she wasn't, she was probably going down sooner rather than later.

    Marisol's Health: 20 - 0 = 20 HP
    Damage Dealt: Roll + 1 = 200% x 4 = 8 DMG

    Marisol's Weapon: Claws (4 Base; +1 Hit)

As the dice seem to be stuck in miss or hit mode, we can probably just go down to 10 since by then I'd imagine they'd both be a little winded and probably exhausted in a "crap this is so much harder than a dummy /criiiiiies" way.
