The Semblance of Unity

Predestined Victim

In an effort to get to know his surroundings better (and maybe for a few personal reasons that involved the fact that he now lived in a dorm), Dahl had wandered to the woods ringing the facilities. They'd been warned off going too deeply inside until such time as they could take care of themselves. The words 'hunt' and 'wild' had been mentioned. Dahl wasn't particularly worried - he had no intention of going in deeply.

He paused, peering into the woods. They did seem to get pretty thick quickly.

They did get thick quickly; Mal was right on the edge of the woods where it began to get too thick, the underbrush harder to push through. It wasn't a line, exactly, that had been drawn in the woods, but it was definitely a distance that was marked.

"Hi. Dahl, isn't it?" He'd caught sight of the other man out of the edge of his vision, and turned a little to look at him. "I remember you from dinner."

Dahl looked up sharply at the voice. He hadn't expected anyone to be out here and he grimaced for a moment. He certainly couldn't go about his business with people lurking around. Especially not cops, a profession he was already wary of.

"I remember you, too. What're you doing out here, donut patrol?"

Mal smiled at him-- a sweet, sunny smile from behind his glasses. It was almost a little bit wicked. "Exploring. What about you?" He leaned his shoulder against a tree, and crossed his arms over his chest. He looked comfortable, and not at all like he was worried about being called donut patrol. He was going to remember it for later, actually-- it was funny.

Dahl's eyes narrowed. There was something just inherently distrustful about Mal. Maybe he wouldn't think that way if he didn't know the other man was a cop, but he knew. The point was moot. And the way Mal just casually stood there... There was no way he knew what Dahl was up to, but still.

"Well, why don't you go be your thin blue line self elsewhere. I came out for some solitude. Alone time." As if he could get the mood back, though. Dahl sighed.

It made him smile a little wider at Dahl, and push his glasses up higher on his nose where they'd slipped down. "Is that a TV reference? I should warn you that I'm terribly pop culture illiterate."

It was hard to tell if he was teasing Dahl for a purpose or just because it was something he enjoyed. Dahl was prickly, and he rather liked him riled up. "There's a lot of forest. You could go find another patch of it." He waved to one side, indicating the rest of the trees and undergrowth around them.

Dahl huffed irritably. "Or you could find your own, differing patch of forest. What are you doing out here alone, anyway? Yes, you said exploring, but should you be doing that alone..." He looked Mal over from head to toe slowly. While he was pretty sure the man could take care of himself (as such, his words were born from a need to try and poke rather than any real concern), Dahl supposed the woods could be full of supernatural things. He hadn't been concerned for himself as it would have been a relatively quick trip. There would've been no real ambiance, but it was better than nothing. Or would have been. The brows over his eyes drew together irritably.

"So, cunstable, I find I rather like this bit of forest, so if you could just move along..."
