Monsters were real- really? This was all so overwhelming, but there were at least a few constants, one of them sitting on the table before her in the form a recurve bow. It had been a year or so since she'd last drawn one, having been part of the archery club at her university. She supposed is she had to defend herself some day she might as well start somewhere familiar.

... And her first shot went wide, wonderful. She knew this dummy could launch padded projectiles back at her, but they still hurt and it was still a surprise to have something flying towards you. She caught her breath and rubbed where the projectile had hit and frowned, adjusting her aim and letting loose another arrow.

Well at least that hit was closer to her mark ... if only she had a spotter. Oh well, she would have to become competent enough on her own anyways! The dummy let forth another projectile, leaving a stinging sensation in her thigh where she had failed to avoid it. But she had overcompensated with this shot and could tell it wasn't reaching center mass even before it hit the dummy, Am I really this out of practice?

She tuned out the dull pain where the dull projectiles had hit and squared her stance to her shoulders, re-centering herself. She breathed in as she drew back her arrow, letting her hand find its anchored position on her cheek and breathing out as she aimed and released the shot... and this time it struck true to her mark. She was so elated with her success that she missed its retaliation though and her victory cheer was quickly stifled, Right, maybe make sure an enemy is actually out for the count before you start celebrating.

She went through the same motions as her last shot, but this was a miss too! Had her previous shot simply been lucky? She frowned as another projectile came her way- she didn't even try to dodge it this time. And how was it this dummy was accurate that it could hit her every time? I really wouldn't last in a fight, targets don't usually fire back at me!

But that was no way to think, and there was no chance of her giving up now. Catherine collected herself and turned a steely gaze towards the dummy, she would stand tall, stand firm, and prove her worthiness as a chosen of Athena! Her arrow flew straight and true into the chest of the dummy- and now that she knew that first true hit hadn't been lucky she wouldn't run, she would take its retaliation in place and make sure her shots counted!

Sure enough, her tactic was working. Yes, she was taking damage from the dummy, but there seemed to be no way to avoid that- perhaps its hits were guided by magic anyways? However, her arrows were hitting their mark successfully now and she'd be damned if she let a simple dummy beat her.

The dummy was starting to look the worse for wear, and while Catherine wasn't exactly feeling 100%, she was doing a far sight better than her opponent. Her arms were starting to feel weak from repetitive shooting, but the satisfaction from hearing another solid "thump" as her arrow struck its chest again more than made up for any weariness starting to creep into her shoulders.

Catherine let herself smile as yet another arrow struck her dummy squarely in the chest. Now that she had found her rhythm again she was really making strides. Perhaps she wasn't so rusty after all... and her dummy was starting to look more like a pin cushion than an opponent.

And with one final shot, the dummy fell. It had felt good to face an opponent that posed an actual threat, strangely exhilarating for a woman used to a simple life of teaching. It reminded her somewhat of shooting skeet with her family, but she supposed this wouldn't be a passing hobby if monsters would be seeking out the Chosen, it would be self-defense. Catherine returned her bow to the table and took a moment to cool down, stretching to ease the tension in her upper body.
