It was summer in the city and being somewhere on the ocean it meant vacationers, tourists and all around an increase in business in the city center.

Wil would be the first to capitalize on it. The shirtless, freckled artist sat on a milk crate with a piece of cardboard on the ground in front of him. Pale blue eyes peeped out from under a mop of curls as a girl no older than twelve dropped a dollar into his open backpack (that was shaped like a tiger head).

He gave her a lazy grin before slowly laying out a reading of tarot cards with her. The girl was young, so she didn't know what most of it meant, but him telling her she'd find wealth- maybe a gift in her future- had her grinning and running expectantly to her parents when the reading ended.

Wil was known by most of the store owners for sleeping inside their establishments and inevitably being chased away. He was also seen commonly around the college campus sleeping on benches, doing public art installations, and rumored to be the guy if you wanted any prime bud.

He stretched his legs, wearing sloppy paint speckled cut off shorts, and at first appearances seemed to be a bit homeless if not for the brand new looking cell phone that he occasionally checked.

It was Jordan's day off - or, more precisely, it was one of a string of "days off" that would continue until he acquired a new job, seeing as how the small business that he'd been working for had shut down, and he was going to have to find a new one soon, as that was part of the deal with his grandfather about staying in Ashdown and taking summer courses. This was part of why he was in the city center at the moment. The other part was that it was about time for lunch and there was a bagel shop that he liked, and he could really use a cup of coffee too.

He paused under the shade of a small, fenced-in tree that shaded the sidewalk to watch a young girl getting a tarot card reading from a shirtless and rather scruffy-looking guy who had set up with a milk crate and a bit of cardboard in lieu of a stand. Jordan wasn't entirely sure whether he believed in tarot readings; it was probably random chance and social engineering, but he wasn't one to discount that quiet possibility that something else was at work. Anyway, it was pretty much harmless.

As the girl ran off smiling, Jordan took another look at the entrepreneur who was now gathering up his cards. The guy looked familiar. Had he seen him before? Somewhere around campus, probably; the guy looked to be around the right age to be a student himself, and a scruffy and eccentric appearance wasn't in any way an indication that someone wasn't a student. Jordan checked his wallet and took out a five. He could have a regular coffee instead of a fancy one.

He stepped up and dropped the bill into the guy's backpack. "Hey," he said cheerfully, "I could use a little advice."

Wil had just folded a silk cloth around his tarot cards and returned them to the small wooden box they were kept in. He had fished something hand rolled out of the front pocket of his backpack when the shadow of another pedestrian fell over him.

Wil pulled the smoke from his lips and smiled lazily, tucking it behind his ear as he blinked up through his curls, "Advice hm?" He watched the fiver fall into his bag and smiled more.

"Got all kinds of forms of advice. What are you looking for? The ether is-" he waved a stained hand, "-eerie around you."

The blonde rummaged in his pack, "Tarot, runes, palm reading-" and he produced a battered looking Magic 8-Ball, "And 8-Ball. I know you're skeptical but you'd be surprised."

"Magic 8 ball?" Jordan repeated, sounding a little skeptical. "That might be a little non-specific. Maybe tarot. I'm looking for a job, thought I might ask if there's some kind of direction I should be looking." He produced a slightly sheepish smile. "Can't hurt, right?"

He wondered if this guy genuinely believed in what he was selling, or whether he was just selling it. Maybe it didn't matter. The results would be the same either way, whether or not it was influenced by anything out of the ordinary.

"Last guy I did an 8-Ball reading it was about a job too," Wil smiled a bit, "Maybe after the tarot. For a different question." He maybe really liked his 8-Ball.

Wil leaned for his back and retrieved his tarot cards. "I'm gonna shuffle. Then you are, can you shuffle?"

The cards were unwrapped and held between his hands a moment. He inhaled, exhaled, and then began to shuffle with the dexterity of a casino dealer. Wil looked up at Jordan, squinted and gaped a bit like a fish. It was almost a dumb looking expression.

"Have I seen you before?"

"I can shuffle," Jordan agreed. Not as well as this guy could, apparently, but he could manage a deck of cards fairly fluently. He watched the smooth interleaving of thin cardboard with interest.

"I was gonna ask you that, actually," he said. "I guess that suggests the answer's probably yes. I go to Rider-Waite, maybe we saw each other around there somewhere?" He felt faintly awkward looming over the guy while they were talking; he checked the sidewalk under him to make sure there were no suspicious stains or wads of gum, and sat down.

Wil, despite his lazy expression and sleepy eyes, had very deft hands and his shuffling style was enough to draw the eye.

"Oh cool man." He smiled crookedly and nodded his head, "Yeah I just graduated but like," he huffed a little laugh, "I think I'll keep going cause-" A freckled shoulder bobbed in a shrug. "I get to keep making art I wanna make."

The cards were stilled in his hands, the deck slid together and he handed it over. "Now when you shuffle you should really focus on your question." Wil closed his eyes and motioned to his whole body, "Like move your energy into the cards."

"Oh, well, congratulations then," Jordan said, nodding in return. "Fine arts?" It wasn't a surprise in any way; art students were often a little eccentric and into the unusual or mystical, at least the ones he'd met.

He accepted the deck of cards and focused on them with a small frown of concentration, attempting to follow the instructions. The tarot cards were a little longer than the playing cards he was used to, and his first try at shuffling was a little clumsy, but he got the hang of it quickly. He shuffled the cards together a few times, then offered the deck back. "That good?"

"Perf." Wil did a-ok fingers and accepted the deck back. "Gonna do a simple reading- not a full one. Just not a good environment for it." Maybe if he had some tiny hole in the wall with a neon sign and a crystal ball, or at least if they were indoors.

"You ever done this before?" Wil was spreading the deck out across the cardboard. "Some people don't like to let people touch their cards, but I think it's better to have you infuse your energy.. and pick your own. Stay true to your wishes."

"Pull 6 cards. Don't look at them."

"Once when I was a kid, but not since then." Jordan had spent his allowance on a reading at a fair when he was ten, over his mother's scowl of disapproval, and come away not much enlightened but feeling as though he'd seen something out of the ordinary. He'd gotten a lecture about wasting money afterwards, which had only somewhat diminished his sense of satisfaction.

"Guess that'd make some kind of logical sense," he said, and picked six cards out of the spread-out deck, pulling them out and handing them back to Wil. "If it's about me, it should be influenced by me, or something."

Wil gathered the deck, pushed it all back together and added the 6 Jordan had chosen to the top so he could pull and flip them.

"Ready-?" He said softly, as if something amazingly mystical may happen when he flipped the first card.

"The first card is how you feel about yourself right now." He flipped the card, a skeletal knight on horseback, "Death."

He couldn't have asked for a better draw really, "Don't take it the wrong way. It doesn't mean you are dying." His fingers still rested on it, "But It does mean things around you have changed. Perhaps ended. Maybe you feel like things are falling apart a bit out of your control." Wil blinked, but smiled, "But it also means openings for you. Endings of course bring forth new beginnings."

Jordan's eyebrows jumped up when the card was revealed, but he nodded as he listened to Will's explanation. "Guess that's fitting enough," he said. "I did just lose a job, that's a pretty big change, and not exactly under my control. Maybe not as dramatic-sounding as death," and he did spooky fingers, smiling.

"Well," Wil smiled lazily and wrinkled his nose, "I guess a TRANSITION card doesn't have the same impact."

His fingers lingered over the deck, "Next card is what you are looking for right now. What you are seeking."

Wil flipped it, the figure of an angel blowing a horn above nude figures raising their arms, "Judgement." He gave a sage nod, "Meaning what you want most right now is a new start. You want to move on from what's behind you..."

Wil tilted his head, "But it's also telling you not to be sad about the past. This future is for rejoicing. Efforts made in your past should pay off in the path ahead."

Jordan nodded thoughtfully. "That's relevant," he said. "Maybe it's telling me to make sure my resume's fully up to date, huh?" He chuckled. "I sure hope my efforts will continue to pay off."

I like the OOC relevance here as well lol

"Hey man- up to date resume is like.. super important. I heard you're supposed to keep it to one page.." He smirked and leaned forward to whisper, "I don't have a resume but I do my boyfriend's if you need help."

Wil leaned back and put his fingers on the next card, regaining his serious business face. "Next card is your Fears." His brows bobbed a bit.

The card flipped, "The Empress..." Wil's head tilted a bit, "You're feeling insecure maybe or a little vulnerable because of the loss of the job." His eyes rose to the other, "But don't worry because there are people around you who care, and will help you endure along the way. Just try to resist reflecting your bad feelings back to them even if you're frustrated."
