Perenna looked up into the trees as she walked. The day was on the warmer end of things, and the shade was helping to keep her cool. Despite the weather, she wanted to see if she could find more birds. Every time she heard or saw the flutter of wings, Perenna would pull out the large book of birds she had in her purse and mark down which ones she'd seen that day.
Others would find it tedious, but it amazed Perenna which ones she would see more of each day. Sure, pigeons and seagulls and such were easy...But there were so many, more colorful birds!
She continued walking down the street until she heard a flutter of wings that seemed... off? The sound came from closer to the ground and the bird's chirp didn't sound too happy. Perenna hurried toward the sound and found a young bird being held by the bite of a young cat. "Let that little bird go," Perenna yelled.
The cat only looked at her while the bird kept flapping its wings. Perenna pulled out a bag of crunch cheese puffs from her bag. She took one out and inched towards the cat. "May I trade you one of these in exchange for you letting go of the bird?" She held one out with one hand and shook the bag with the other. "I have more of these as well!"

Walking along with a little skip in her step she swung her arms back and forth as she hummed a little tune and enjoyed the current weather pattern they were having. Her thoughts were disrupted by the sound of someone talking and she came around the corner to see a girl, a cat and a bird. The bird was frantically trying to get away but the cat had it firmly in it's mouth but appeared to not be hurting it. Plus the cat was still young so it was likely just practicing. Pushing back her hat a little bit with her pawed gloved hands she watched for a second before grabbing something in the bag slung over one shoulder. Shaking the can of cat treats it seemed to draw it's attention far better than the cheese puffs had been.
It didn't look to be a stray, at least to her, likely an indoor/outdoor cat. "Here kitty kitty." She said shaking the tin again hoping it released the bird from it's mouth and came to her for a cat treat. It seemed conflicted, the girl with the cheese puffs, the bird in it's mouth or the cat treats. After what seemed like forever to Nadia the cat released the bird and let out a little chatter like meow and came to her and rubbed it's face on the little tin happily. Opening the container she placed one of the treats on the ground and scratched the top of it's head. "Is the bird okay?" She asked looking over at the other girl.

All of her concentration was on the cat and the bird until she heard someone else approaching them. Perenna's hand was still outstretched with the food. She glanced at the girl and noticed that she had a can of something, but at least the cat was responding to it. The cat walked towards the girl and Perenna walked quietly towards the bird, careful not to startle the cat.
The bird was still frantic about its ideal, but calmed down after Perenna picked it up and soothed it. Her own pet bird would be crazy sometimes, so it was easy for her. She held the bird firmly until she could tell it was relaxed and then opened her hands. The bird stretched its own wings and took off into a tree. It perched there and gave them a few chirps before flying off.
"Thankfully, it seems to be fine." She said while turning to look at the girl. "Thank you very much for helping!"
"I'm glad you had cat treats. I think this would have ended badly if you hadn't come along." She looked at her cheese balls before putting them back in her bag. "I don't think it would like these very much..." Perenna dusted her hands of cheese and offered her hand to the cat and spoke to it. "I know everyone gets hungry, but you shouldn't eat birds!"

The cat purred as she scratched the top of it's head and Nadia turned her attention to the other girl. "I'm glad that it's alright! And it's not big deal, as much as nature has it's circle I like to break it up when I can." There was a big smile on her face as she said it. While there was a food chain she didn't always like to see it followed through with. "Oh yes, I usually go to one of the local shelters and play with the kittens and cats there so I like to have some treats on me." She said putting the can back in her bag and returning it to her back. "I'm glad everything ended up working out."
Her attention turned to the cat is it seemed interested in the girls hand as it was offered and rubbed against it affectionately. It gave a chatter at her words as if to say 'I just wanted to play with it and nibble on it a bit.' Nadia gave a small giggle. "It's always funny when they do that." It was such a wonderful noise to her, more in the brightens your day and makes you smile. Birds on the other hand had a way of making her calm and just relaxed all around. "I'm Nadia, what's your name?"

"I love birds, and can't imagine them getting hurt, even if it is part of their life cycle..." She looked up at the tree where the bird had 'thanked' them. Looking back down at the cat, she couldn't help but wonder. "I know feral cats need to hunt to survive, but this kitty is too nice to be feral, right?"
Perenna squatted down and stared at the cat as the girl giggled at it's noises. "Do you think she has a home? Is she being fed enough?" She offered her hand again and it was met by the wet nose of the cat. "I don't really spend that much time with cats, so I don't really know too much about them..."
She stood up again and introduced herself. "My name is Perenna. It's very nice to meet you, Nadia!" Perenna rummaged through her purse again and pulled out her book. She flipped to a page where she had taped a Polaroid of her pet bird, Beau. "This is Beau. He's the reason why I'm... protective? over birds."

"I can understand that." She said looking at the bird in the tree before looking back over towards the girl. "I adore cats, though I also like other animals too." Looking down at the kitty before them she nodded her head.
"It's likely someone's pet. I know a few owners who let their cats go in and out of the house. It likely belongs to one of the places around here." She looked around for a stoop with a dish on it since it was likely where the kitty belonged, but one could never tell. Cats were pretty smart, from what she knew of them. "She looks pretty healthy though!" Smiling she watched the cat nose the girls hand.
"It's very nice to meet you as well Perenna."
As the girl pulled out her book she grew curious as to what she was looking at and was soon shown a wonderful photo of Perenna's pet bird. "EEEE! He's adorable!" She said giddily looking at her handsome fellow. "It's a very suitable name for him I think." That was just based on the image though. "I have a kitty myself, her name is Orion but I don't have a photo of her." She said with a small frown but it quickly brightened. "Maybe you can come over and meet her sometime!"

Part of Perenna wanted to say she liked most cats, only the ones that didn't attack and try to eat random birds, but she knew that she was wrong to think so. "They are very interesting animals. This one's at least really sweet to not know us! I'm happy she's at least healthy. I'll think of her as... Just wanting to play with the bird."
Perenna smiled and laughed. What she thought was going to be a disaster actually ended quiet well. Both the bird and kitty were fine, and she made a new friend! "Oh! Maybe we can have a pet play date or something? Beau is well trained and doesn't take off randomly. At least, he's never done it."
"How about you write down your mom's phone number and name, and our moms can talk and see when we can go to each others' house?" Perenna flipped through her book until she found one of her 'notes' pages. "Maybe we can go to yours? I don't know how well cats travel..."

"They really are. They have a mind of their own most of the time." She said watching the feline for a moment. She gave Perenna a smile, a good thought was always to think positive! She was glad that she had come around the corner when she had, or else she never would have met Perenna, or saved the bird from the cat. Not to say that Perenna couldn't have done it. It's just one would never know.
"That would be so much fun! I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind one bit." Nadia was growing anxious at the prospect of a new friend. She pulled a pencil with a cat eraser on it out of her bag and wrote her number down. "Oh I do hope they say yes. And I think She'd travel well enough? I'd just have to have her in a cat carrier the whole time." She wondered if she'd be able to walk to her house or if mom would have to drive her. Though they hadn't even said yes yet.
"Well, I do have to get going! It was really nice meeting you Perenna. I hope to talk to you again soon!." She said handing her book back to her. She gave a final wave and disappeared on her way.

After Nadia wrote down the information, Perenna closed the book and stuffed it back into her bag. "Well, it's better safe than sorry since we didn't meet at school or anything." Potential dangers were everywhere, and best they let their parents talk it out.
"It was very nice meeting you too, Nadia!" She waved at her new friend. "Hope to see you soon!"
