█ BACKGROUND
Stale bread, cold nights, unreasonable beatings -- it's all Kaede remembers from his childhood. He thinks he was the fifth child in a litter of ten, or maybe more, that all huddled in a pathetic hovel in the slums. By the time he popped out, Kaede's sperm donor had already skipped town, having blessed his mother with two children prior. A year later and the boy's still beating heart could be considered a miracle, but no one thought like that. Another mouth to continue feeding was no godsend, only a burden. At the age of five, he was already learning how to scavenge for food and beg passerby for spare change. His older siblings taught him how to survive, but not for his own sake. If Kaede were to live, he would have to provide in return. Come winter and he suddenly had two baby sisters to look out for and was entrusted with the responsibility of imparting his crucial survival knowledge to them. To this day, Kaede still isn't sure of what his siblings' names were. There may have been a Yuki or Rin somewhere among them. Back then, names didn't matter -- only how much food and money you brought home at the end of the day.
By the age of ten, Kaede was so malnourished he could have been pronounced dead on sight. He had lost several siblings by that time, the younger ones from disease and starvation, and the older ones from violence and eerie disappearances. Soon enough, he thought, his own bittersweet demise would come, and he prayed every day would be his last. However, Kaede was too much of a coward and desperately clung to life despite how meaningless it was. To prove he was still alive, he took to slicing at his wrists and thighs, would sob himself to sleep at how despicable his life was.
Kaede assumes he was just becoming a teenager when he started to get a grasp on his shifting abilities. He knew he had to learn how to control it if he actually wanted to live. Thus, while under the cloak of the night, Kaede would take on his raccoon form and ransack dumpsters for anything edible. A few years later and he found himself breaking into shops and even homes to steal what he could, just a little something to help his family through the next week. Luckily, he was never caught. Kaede did, however, have a few narrow escapes in which he was almost shot once and nearly captured by police another time.
It was probably on his sixteenth birthday that Kaede's mother finally passed away due to complications during childbirth; no one mourned her death.
Without a common connection, Kaede's siblings slowly began leaving. He never begged anyone to stay, never sought help from neighbours. They were all bonded by blood, but that didn't matter. There was no love, no emotion at all between them, only the mutual desire to survive. The only thing keeping them together was the decisive head of their household, their late mother. Without her, there was no reason to stick around. When it was finally just Kaede and his youngest siblings, he made a near-impossible decision. In the middle of the night, he scooped up what was left of his family and dropped them off at the orphanage, knowing full-well that they may end up there forever or even worse, be turned into slaves.
Completely on his own, Kaede found life more difficult. He no longer had the safety net of his siblings' empathy food for those rough days when his searches were futile. Desperate to survive, Kaede sought out Ghost to find employment. He needed money fast and was willing to do whatever it took. They saw something of value in his abilities, his knowledge of the city and its people, his determination. And since then, Kaede has been smuggling drugs all over the place for whoever is willing to buy from a shady raccoon.
█ ABILITIES
▬ SHIFTING
Kaede comes from a family of metamorphoses, all of which are able to shift into some kind of small mammal. As would be expected, Kaede can turn into a raccoon at will. He has trained for years to achieve the level of skill he possesses, even living as a raccoon for days on end. He's far from an expert, but has almost no issues controlling his ability. He does, however, tend to shift into a raccoon when he finds himself in stressful/dangerous situations.
▬ ENHANCED SENSES
As a perk of being a raccoon metamorphose, Kaede has a strong sense of smell. However, his skill is nowhere near that of lycans, and he is only able to use it to sniff out simple things including food and some drugs. In addition to his strong olfaction, Kaede also possesses superb auditory perception. He's able to hear the most hushed tones if he focuses, but in turn, he can become quickly overwhelmed by loud and high-pitched noises.
▬ HAPTIC PERCEPTION
Kaede has a bizarrely advanced somatosensory system, meaning that he is able to perceive things through mere touch that others typically cannot. Sadly, he is unable to use this trait to any advantage. Kaede's haptic sense is extremely sensitive, causing him to shirk away from pretty much any physical contact. In addition, most abrasive fabrics are painful for him to wear, but if he doesn't cover himself, he becomes uncomfortable from the sensory overload.

- Kaede is blue-yellow colourblind (tritanope) and near-sighted.
