Alg roused before the sun with a need to use the bathroom. Jeremiah had been sleeping either heavily or lightly these days, the visions sometimes making sleep difficult, and other nights the mental exhaustion enough to keep him down deeply for the entirety of the night and into the morning. This seemed to be one of his deep sleeps, only moving into Alg’s warm spot when the man hauled himself out of the bed and padded blindly to the bathroom.

He could hear birds outside but see no light which was a good indication it was the wee hours of the morning and while groggy, Alg’s mind was already churning itself to life. Introspective thought usually meant for late nights had hit him at this early hour and when he came back into the bedroom he moved to the bed only to retrieve his glasses and press a kiss to Jeremiah’s head before he grabbed his robe and slipped on his slippers.

He was a writer and would be a fool to a deny a mood to write. He had the sort of mind that had a hard time turning off, always running over what was happening, planning for what would happen, parsing through things that had happened and prioritizing them for quicker or later reference. Active imagination was a double edged sword, as blessed as he was with interesting fictional ideas, they often seeped into his real life and spun his mind to paranoid 'what if' stretches that were hard to pull out of. It was why he carried a notebook, to jot down important bits of the continual stream of thoughts before they left him, and get out the toxic ones to paper when he could.

Algie headed to his office, even without a cup of tea, and as he headed for the room housing his computer and notes he passed through the doorway and knew immediately by the sudden temperature change that he was standing in other ashdown in his robe and ********.”

He’d taken Jeremiah’s suggestion of keeping supplies here seriously and since he’d arrived right where he’d left Alg found a small care package in the house- a bag with a notebook and pen, some power bars from Zac for a more extended stay, and a small pocket umbrella.

Alg did take a moment to sit and jot down what he’d remembered of his writing ideas until the chill of this place began to get to him in his pajamas and thin robe. It was summer in Ashdown which, they’d discovered, meant it was colder here on the other side.

He was tired and he’d like to get home, but the prospect he’d find a door while sitting here was small. The more you moved, the more you explored, the better your chance of finding an exit or at least someone or something that could take you back.

When he stepped finally out into the rain Alg grabbed for the umbrella before pausing. Magic. He should be practicing, should be taking a page from his husband’s book, so instead of using the umbrella he thought of the barrier and glanced up at the sky.

Instead all he could think of was being warm.

His visualization shifted, unable to pin down the memory to shield the rain, and instead thinking of warm fires and warm bodies. Those memories of summer rains were still there but the result shifted when he focused on the heat and when Algie opened his eyes again he found the air shimmered around him like heat waves and the immediate vicinity was decidedly warmer. The rain seemed to evaporate into mist before it even hit him. He was, as Jeremiah always said, a walking space heater.

Algie still didn’t like that he couldn’t pin down the spells. Every time he tried there ended up being variations, nothing besides ‘Lumos’ every truly duplicating correctly and that of course was so specific it could hardly fail. Jeremiah had learned about willpower, learned he had to command the magic, but Algie would have a better time with that if had an easier time grasping anything consistently. As soon as he felt like he had it, some detail would slip his mind or some visualization would shift with his wandering mind and the results would end up different than the time before.

Maybe if he could just write things down. Maybe if there was a guidebook. An instruction manual.

Unfortunately they’d tried that, going to the library and through the bookstore. He’d been in the Bibliophile storage on this side and the other and the College on the otherside wasn't even there. The library continued to shut them out and he felt like even now, should he try, he’d find the doors locked to him.

The professor knew he had to think outside the box and that perhaps even this was a test of willpower and strength of command. Instead of sticking to the things he was familiar with, the places that should be sure bets, he should be searching outside of his comfort zones.

His worst case scenario of course was that he found nothing, which left him stuck in OAD until Jeremiah came looking. His best was that he found what he was looking for- or perhaps just an exit.

Algie picked a new direction, away from the library and the campus, away from the forest where he knew Heliodora waited eternally until the predicted inevitable, away from the places he knew all too well and had searched time and time again...

He simply walked and let his desire, his need, his internal requirement unconsciously dictate his path.

He’d walked as his mind drifted, turning over theories, working on spells in his mind, wondering after Jeremiah, because time was a hardly fluid in this place and it wasn’t like he had any way to track it. His path soon became merely dictated by what stood in his way.

At a four way intersection he looked left to find a swarm of jellyfish looking wishes floating on the air. They were almost lovely and he did indeed pause to admire them but had no desire to tempt fate by heading their way and wading through them.

Turning right he noticed something much more sinister looking, a flock of black birds a football field length away from him covering a whole portion of street and everything from light poles to mailboxes to parked cars.

He absolutely wasn’t going that way.

It was frustrating. No exit. No lead on books. Not even the comfort of knowing he was adept enough with magic to be truly safe.

Goddammit he should be asleep.
Goddammit he just wanted to go home.
Goddammit he wanted to remember anything properly for long enough to duplicate it….. and a ******** way out!!

He was near to screaming it out, near to simply exploding with it, the anxiety turning to frustration and then to anger, the air around him shimmering further with heat and then very suddenly the sky opened up and the misting rain turned into a torrential downpour. The shimmering heat around him wasn’t enough to keep it at bay, not hot or dense enough to save him from it.

As Alg stood and slowly became drenched with rain, slippers getting soggy, he actually yelled in frustration.

And the jellyfish like murmurs to his left seemed to glow suddenly, like a drifting mass of tiny paper lanterns, and then they very gently shifted and parted and the glow was revealed to be headlights. They floated cleanly over and around the car as it passed through the cloud of them and much to his utter surprise a pearly white Prius, with something like a weird Uber sign in the window, pulled up in front of Algie in the rain with faint electro-funk thudding behind the dark window of the driver’s seat.

“Don’t get into automobiles with strangers..” He murmured to himself as he did the exact opposite and in an effort to escape the soaking rain, opened the car door and climbed inside.

It was clean, smelling vaguely like car air freshener and leather seats, and the music continued to throb until the driver reached to lower the volume. In the mirror Alg could make out the driver, but when asked later he could only remember the uniquely glowing eggshell eyes.

It waited silently to be told where to go so Alg spoke up with only the briefest second of thought.

“I’m looking for a book. Something special. Something-” He thought of a wording, “Unique and unexpected.”

He leaned back, sighed and ran a hand through his wet hair. “Or a way home.”

And then before the driver turned the music back up, he adjusted his wet robe and apologized with a small smile, “Sorry about the seats.. It’s a b***h out there.”

And the music rose again as the driver canted their head to him in the mirror and the thudding beat returned. It was something that he’d never remember but he could feel in his bones.

And then the car began to move.

The other driver lets Algie out on the beach, and the Prius motors away soundlessly into the mist, and... it's the same pebbled-stone beach as it would have been in the real Ashdown, but for the darkness of the water. It still foams up white as it flows between the rocks, a startling contrast that brings to mind pearly white froth in the mouth of a rabid dog.

This is when Algie realizes he's not alone.

Behind him is a young woman, brown hair, blue eyes, horn-rimmed glasses and a faint pink blush to her cheeks. In her arms, tucked against her chest, is a book.

"Hey," she says, and her accent is light but still identifiably British, markedly Received Pronunciation. Like she's been gone from home for quite some time. "How've you been? I haven't seen you in... years, it must be."

To say he was disappointed wouldn't be quite accurate, just that he didn't quite know what he was here for. If it was an exit he couldn't see it and so Alg stood on the rocks with his hands grasping his robe further around him and the cold wind coming and in and out with the angry looking water.

The voice had him jumping, thankfully not swinging, but lost in his thoughts he was easy to surprise. He didn't recognize the young woman, but he felt very conscious suddenly about seeing someone while in this manner of undress (of all the things he could worry about).

He gave her a smile, which was not so forced because it was nice to meet anyone from home even when he didn't actually know them.

"Yes, years," Alg blinked and tilted his head in greeting, knowing better now than to question these sorts of familiarity. "I'm a bit terrible with names, I'm sorry. Alot has happened and you can imagine," He readjusted his robe, motioning a bit to himself in his pajamas, "I'm a bit out of sorts."

The older man took in her appearance, trying to note her state of dress, if she looked current, "How've you been?"

"Um..." She seems to think about it for a second before smiling a very familiar smile. "Mina," she decides, adjusting the book. Mina is well-dressed, possibly even futuristically dressed. Her coat is olive green and more of a windbreaker, except for the extravagantly furry lining to the hood. Her skinny jeans are jet black and so are her pointy-toed oxfords. The v-neck t-shirt is a warm, buttery yellow, and there's a necklace with two rings pendant upon it resting just between her breasts. "Oh, you know, I've been." She speaks lightly, casually, and adjusts the book again, resting it against her hip as if it's quite heavy. "Why don't you change? It won't take but a second."

There was something about Mina that was very familiar and he really couldn't place it. She looked familiar. The rings against her chest drew his eye momentarily but dear lord, no looking at her chest.

"Well I was ah," Alg tugged his robe again, covering his chest a bit more against the chill sea wind, "Hoping to actually get home and warm up and get some more sleep."

He had a wry sort of grin, "You know how I love my layers." Not that he could dress himself now, or knew how to if that was what she was implying.

Alg looked around and found no where she could have come from or where she could have been going. "What are you doing out here? Did you come to find me?"

"So... why don't you do that?" Mina fusses with the book again, arching an eyebrow. "Do you not know how?"

Whatever she was doing out there, she avoided the question quite neatly.

"You forgot all your magic, didn't you."

Alg opened his mouth and closed it. She made it sound like he'd lost his keys or locked himself out of the house.

"I-" He chuckled, "Could I slide by with misplaced it?" His head tilted guiltily and a hand dragged through his hair as he joked.

He of course barely knew magic, at least not yet, but Mina seemed to know him and since he was already acquainted with the the flexible meaning of time here and the possibility that he'd done this all before, he was simply going with it.

Mina frowned at Algie, and she said, "Not really, but it does explain some things." She ran a fingertip over the edge of the book's cover and then held it out at arm's length. "This is yours. I thought you might need it."

s**t, she was frowning.

Alg entered a further level of sheepishness, sighing a bit at himself because he did have no explanation for her. He had no concept of how these things worked, just that they did.

"Thank you," He blinked, reaching for the book and smoothing a hand over the cover as he received it.

"I've actually been looking for it.." Mina was given an honest smile as he adjusted his glasses so green eyes could peer over them as they were wet with mist, "I think."

The cover was given a good look before he opened the cover carefully.

The handwriting inside isn't quite Algie's own, but it's familiar nonetheless. It bears an inscription: In hope that we will meet again.

"You left it with me, don't you recall?" Mina shifts uneasily where she stands, stone crunching beneath her feet. "You didn't want to lose it..." She peers at him, blue eyes concerned. "You don't remember me, do you? I thought it was odd when you didn't correct my name, but you really don't. Not me, not the magic, not anything?"

A thumb brushed over the inscription, again familiar, but he's unable to place it. Algie glanced up from the book to the girl there was an unpleasant feeling that he was letting her down in some way yet again.

"No," Alg said softly, "I don't. I'm sorry. Not you, or the magic or anything." A broad hand rubbed over his forehead, "I've been told this may have happened before. I-" He frowned, "I really wish I could remember." Would it make things easier? Or would be be doomed to repeat others mistakes?

So the name had been more of a test. Which meant it wasn't her name at all. 'Mina' was given another appraisal, from oxfords to glasses, though his eyes again drifted to the rings on a chain at her neck as they were the only notable trinket she wore.

"How about a reintroduction?"

Mina shook her head. "You told me not to. You said it was too risky." She tangled her fingers in the chain of her necklace. "You said you'd find out on your own if it was needful. I've never thought that you'd lie." She smiled at him, a little, uncertain but firm in her convictions: not uncertain about her stance, only uncertain about his reaction to it. "But I can give you the book. It's a grimoire. It has all of the spells you learned, and all of the magic. So you'll be able to learn it again."

"Sounds like me." Always cautious, overly so when everyone else wasn't. "Of all my faults, no, I've never been much of a liar," His lips quirked in amusement and he glanced back down at the book, "Too many tells and never worth it."

He flipped through the first couple pages, seeing things he knew, things he'd done already, but strangely in his mind the words written generated the thought triggers he needed, the correct visualizations. There was his writing, this he knew, mixed with the other familiar hand.

Alg was sure that this was exactly what he'd been looking for... and possibly some version of him had managed to simply make the the book that he couldn't find. Flipping too far yielded worn pages that were empty, and further, crisper ones that were blank. Perhaps the things he'd yet to know, or beyond him, and space for more.

"Thank you, Mina" He smiled, then paused, and offered her a polite hand, whether she took it or not for a gentle squeeze of his own was up to her.

"I'm sorry. It's not even Mina is it?" She was younger, but he didn't even know if she was a Miss or a Mrs. "Do you mind me asking how old you are...? And are you sure there's not something else I can call you? It's rather impolite to call someone the wrong name knowingly."
