He'd been running, but it was only because he didn't have his bike: a slow and steady pound around the track, the vibrantly red soles of his shoes flashing as his feet kicked up. Three laps, maybe, and then he paused, squinting up into the bleachers, his head tipped to the side and curly hair stuck to his face.

Asher thought he saw a familiar face.

For a moment he stood there, still in the middle of the track, where half a dozen other Chosen were making their rounds. He swiped at his forehead, damp, looked around once, then back up to the bleachers --

Then he started up the stairs at a loose jog to see if it was, in fact, one of his tablemates.

He'd been people watching because he really hadn't had anything better to do. The first thing he needed to do when he got back to the real word was, Dahl realized, but more books. Or a Kindle. Something. While he'd been told it was important to exercise, he was loathe to go about running. So here he was, sitting the bleacher watching people and wondering if he could possibly learn something about someone by the way they kicked their legs up as they ran.

Asher had been noticed - he was bad with names, but good with faces and bodies. Except, what the ******** was Asher doing? Dahl leaned forward as Asher stopped still and seemed to stare around and, oh. Well, the game was up - he'd been noticed. He leaned back with a sigh.

"Energetic, aren't you?"

"I don't usually sit around and do nothing as much as is normal here, it seems." He was a little breathless, at least, shaking himself out -- and all he could think was at least there was a breeze coming off of the water, enough to wipe away some of the heat, to chill the sweat still clinging to his face and neck and making the shirt stick against the small of his back.

"I hope this isn't standard, anyway. Maybe it's just like the prep before actually doing stuff starts in." He shook his head just a little bit. "I honestly don't think I'm much good here, if this is what it's all about..."

"Sitting around isn't so bad. Sweat suits you, though.. I guess." He didn't want it to sound too much like a compliment. As for exercise - well, Dahl didn't hate sweating, he just liked the showers that came after much more. And people watching was always amusing. "I would guess it would be preparation. What's the point of gathering a number of 'chosen' without some kind of 'big bad' to fight against." He crossed one leg over the other.

"Doubting yourself so early? You were chosen for a reason, right, Asher?" They all were, even if he had no clue what a god would want with an escort or why she thought an escort worker would make a suitable soldier. He gestured to the spot on the bleachers next to him.

"Probably." He dropped down agreeably onto the seat next to Dahl, legs stretched out in front of him, and swiped at his forehead again. Hair stuck to his cheeks; this weather was killer. They needed a bit of rain, just to bring the temperature down by degrees --

The thought made him hum a little.

"If this is all about gods or whatever, shouldn't there be a god of weather to make this place a comfortable mid-seventy and mostly cloudy all the time?" He shook his head as he said it, turning a plaintive look on Dahl. "And why should it ever snow?"

"You'd have to talk to Zeus for that," he said idly, wishing as well for a cooling breeze, despite his sedentary position. "God of thunder and rain, et cetera. Maybe you can cozy up with Mal and see if he can ask." He fished a cloth out of his pocket and handed it to Asher.

"Dry yourself before you sweat enough to drown." He pushed his own hair out of his face and sighed. "Snow is nice, though. Calming or something. Why - you hate it?"

"Maybe snow'd be better out here than it is in the city." He mopped at his forehead as he said it, mulling it over -- and then shook his head, actually looking down at the cloth that Dahl had given him. It made him quirk a brow, but remarkably, he didn't say anything. Just mopped to his neck, instead.

"In the city it turns into brown slush. Splashes all over everything. Gets in your socks, and your shoes, it's disgusting." He folded the cloth over, then paused. "Do you want this back...?"

"But snow also looks so nice before it gets that way. Makes even a dirty city look clean. You're so cynical." He liked the cold, the biting weather that precluded snow maybe even better than the white stuff itself. Snow could impede his business, but sometimes it was nice to have a break. And some of his regulars were extra generous after a stint away. It had its uses.

He looked down his nearly aquiline nose at Asher and his now-damp cloth. "I was hoping you'd offer to wash it first, but yes."

Asher considered that for just one moment and then, slowly and pointedly, folded the cloth in half one more time to set it down next to Dahl on the seat. Maybe he wasn't all that likely to wash it. Or maybe he was outright refusing, considering the vaguely challenging look on his face as he settled down himself, legs stretched out under the seat in front of him.

"Where are you from again? This mystical place where the snow sits white on the ground and turns everything into a pretty painting?" He shook his head, like he didn't believe it existed.

"D.C.," he said flatly, giving the cloth a look. "And you mean pretty much everywhere. I didn't say it stayed that way, but in the beginning or overnight - yeah, it's clean."

"So where did you live that once it touches the ground it gets dirtied that second?"

"New York." Asher said it with an easy kind of confidence, like he wasn't intimidated by Dahl's optimism. Instead he shook his head, swiping hair out of his face again and blowing out a slow breath. He was still a bit worked up from his run. Maybe, part of him, wanted to get back out there.

"Have you ever stepped off a curb into what looks like nice snow and then found yourself ankle deep in icy water? It's the worst."

"You're going to fling sweat on me," he said disapprovingly, eyeing Asher's rather extravagant hair. There were much more preferable ways to get other peoples' sweat on him than rogue hair droplets.

He gave Asher an odd look. "Of course I have. I can think of about one hundred worse things. At least it wakes you up, and, at this point, shouldn't you just expect things to be hiding under that veneer of white snow?" Dahl tapped his feet carefully into snow piles, but they didn't prevent all puddle incidents. Water proof shoes and extra socks were wonderful.

"Name ten things worse than that." It came out dry and easy -- not exactly a challenge, not because he didn't believe it, but because he wanted to hear what would come out of Dahl's mouth. His eyes sparked with a genuine kind of curiosity, both eyebrows raised in question.

"And I don't mean war. I mean daily things."
