Jeremiah would come to from another fainting episode to see things in his home that were not normally there: a familiar wheelchair, currently empty, with an equally familiar golden retriever sitting patiently next to it. Upon eye contact Clover would offer a lazy, friendly tail wag before surrendering to a yawn it looked like she'd been trying to stifle. Eve was obviously not far off, and a moment later she made her way in from the kitchen on slow, shaky footsteps.

She hated walking. Hot daggers sliced their way up and down her legs with every step, no matter how much she tried to strengthen them at physical therapy and during the full moon, and when she was at rest there was always an immutable background of nervous static. But it was the easiest way to navigate a kitchen designed for standing people.

"Hi there," she grinned, with a mouth full of canine teeth and impossibly yellow slitted eyes. She set a cup of iced-something on the coffee table for him and settled back into her chair, with no small measure of visible relief upon sitting back down. "This tastes terrible, but it might help a little."

Jeremiah woke with a groan, still hoarse sounding but at least he had been able to properly speak without constantly needing a drink. His world was topsy-turvy, visions on the back of his eyelids that he could not get rid of. There were things now in his mind that he could not get rid of and it was, quite frankly, what he should have expected.

Laid out on his back it took him a moment to realize that Clover was there, which lead to the wheelchair. He pushed himself up slowly, pain sparking along his back and mostly ended up leaning against the arm of the couch.

When Eve herself appeared, he gave her a tired smile. Somehow the sight of her in her transitioned state was one that was reassuring. "'lo," he said, then frowned because it had meant to be hullo. The detective gave a slight nod, leaning slowly to take the cup from the coffee table.

"Thanks." ... because, let's be honest, this was Eve and she likely had brought something that would help. Jeremiah was having trouble with his sense of smell (and taste) but the cup was cold and he was taking a small sip. It tasted odd, a little thick, but when it hit the back of his throat-

The numbing sensation was more than welcomed.

"Licorice root," she clarified, "though St. John's wort might have been a better call. I hear you found some more trouble?"

Eve's playfully sympathetic expression was something else with the fangs.

It was impish was what it was, that look of hers, but it made him feel better all the same. "I can't," he breathed out, still a little rough sounding but it did not hurt to swallow at the moment, "taste the licorice."

Jeremiah took another drink, eyes sliding shut briefly. It was a relief. "Can't taste much right now." He paused because he was expecting to need to drink or something but it did not seem necessary. At least for longer than he was used too. "Or smell."

He shook his head, silver hair falling into his eyes as he sat back on the couch. "I called in a favor and got more than I bargained for."

"We really are caught up in an Aesop fable," quipped Eve -- and there was a large, fat crow tapping at the window, holding a bag of chips it must have stolen from a nearby gas station. She tried waving it off, which didn't do much of anything, while continuing, "Is that something you're ready to talk about?"

Jeremiah raised an eyebrow at the crow and glanced towards Eve. Was that her? Probably but he'd ask later about it. One more slow drink and he was cradling the cup in his fingers, thumb brushing along the rim.

"You remember when I lost my memory?" When he had forgotten a week's worth of memories, including coming by to pick up Heliodora's foot from their fridge.

The crow was persistent. It was going to get annoying.

"Yes," she recalled with a nod. "I think Leila's still annoyed she didn't start having prophetic vision before that."

"It may not have helped considering it was the Burning Man and he has my number." Jeremiah was easily baited sometimes when it came to the neverending fire. "... but out of that meeting is how I gained the favor I called in. It was with him."

Hellbine, who had decided to make an appearance, came into the living room and sniffed at Clover briefly before he noticed the crow that was pecking at the window. He blinked lazily, tail swishing from side to side as if in thought, before he was hopping up onto the windowsill.

It was pawed at until it popped and he could push the window open. Clearly the crow wanted in!

There was a pause for a moment or two as Eve weighed the information in her mind, before putting the impish expression halfway back on and laughing for a second, ironically.

"You know," she explained, "between the two of us, it always felt like I'd be the one to make a deal with the devil. I'm a little disappointed you beat me to it."

The crow, awkwardly giving Hellbine a gentle n** behind an ear as thanks, hobbled proudly in through the window and dropped the bag of chips on the floor near Eve before settling on the back of the couch behind Jer and fluffing up into a massive dark loaf, as if it was right at home there.

Eve picked up the bag of chips and began working them open as if this were routine for her, which it sort of was at this point.

"I've apparently made something of a habit of it," wryly said, "but an apt way to put it. I'm sure, given enough time, you'll find yourself with one too." It was mostly humor at this point but somehow he did expect that at one point or another, everyone would find themselves making some kind of deal or alliance.

Jeremiah's lips pressed to a thin line as he watched his cat let the crow in, rolling his eyes at the entire thing. Hellbine gave the crow a pleased mew and proceeded to curl up on the windowsill with it open. It was a nice sunny spot now and he would bask.

"... is this" he asked slowly, raising the cup to take another drink because it was helping and easier to speak, "common?" Eve having crows bring her treats. It briefly distracted him from what he was talking about as he tilted his head to look at the crow would was, admittedly, a cute loaf of a bird right now.

"You know me, I hate being cliche," Eve bantered back. "Maybe I'd rather have the devil make a deal with me." Behind the joking -- or perhaps because of it -- she was very sure of how serious this situation was. But Jeremiah had already suffered enough consequences for it, and most definitely had gotten enough scolding and ear-tugging from his husband and others about it. She wasn't interested in piling on more by playing disappointed.

Instead, she followed his gaze towards the overly contented bird, sighing a bit and nodding. "They started appearing right after that first full moon. Just watching at first, but later some of them started to befriend me. I think they have a sense for magic, too."

"They're inclined to do that as well," Jeremiah chuckled. He knew Eve understood the seriousness of the situation but he appreciated her sense of humor about it all that same. It eased some of the tension that he had over the entire thing. After all he had gone into this trying to get something that would aid them all but he had probably been a little too hopeful.

That it had jumbled his mind and body was probably the least damaging thing it could have done.

The detective was half tempted to reach out and see if he could smooth a finger along the feathers of the loaf bird but he was also aware that he was starting to become chill once more and it likely would not want a cold finger along it's feathers. It was also a wild bird, not someone's pet.

"Ah, so perhaps that's your ability? Beyond being a moonwalker." Moonwalker ended up being rasped out, Jeremiah sighing as he plucked up the tea once more to take a drink. "I wouldn't be surprised if birds have some kind of awareness as well. Cats certainly do." He got a slightly impish look on his face, though it was clearly tired. "If they're always bringing you snacks, that's certainly a lovely perk."

Crunching down on a chip and giving a flippant shrug, Eve replied, "It's not like there's a better explanation for it." Then she frowned quite severely while testing the chip in her mouth. Trying to chew on stuff like this with the pointy teeth was not pleasant, and after grimacing her way through the first one she set the rest of the bag back down on the table. At least the crow didn't seem offended.

"So, tell me about this deal," she said. "What you're willing and able to describe, anyway."

Jeremiah was silent for a beat, watching Eve and drinking slowly. The cup was held between his fingers, briefly looking down into it before he shook his head.

"At the cost of friendship with Sunny Shore, the Burning Man gave me a favor. Anything I wanted, any time I want." There was a bitter smile there on his face, a touch of sadness as well. Some part of him still had a hard time reconciling Sunny with the truth of things (and what she had done) and his feelings towards her.

"We've done this all before, Eve, so many times." For the briefest moment his shoulders slumped, thumb rotating the cold bone ring on his pinky. "So I asked for knowledge that might help us."

Jeremiah's frustration was clear, and Eve easily agreed with it. "Leila and I have talked about that some. You know her little premonitions? Part of me wonders if she's getting glimpses of the past as well as the future.

"If there's anything we know about our adversary, it's that they are a creature of habit, of status quo. They love their routines, and over the years it seems like we have become a part of them. Even the most trivial moments," like a crow bringing chips, she silently communicated, with a brief flicker of her eyes toward the open bag on the table, "could be markers of things going according to plan."

She shook her head, a little embarassed at the tangent she'd given. "I really don't like that. But you have information?"
