“So…” He said “Married?” He arched his eyebrows and gave a sidelong look at Jer as he said as he checked the emails to make sure he had the right time to go and see the paintings. He’d almost asked Autumn, but she was so busy right now, he felt…awful but he’d do his best to make it up to her. God she was going to kill him if she found out what he was trying with Heliodora. Heck, his Father probably would too. “Little sad I didn’t get to be there.” He admitted azuredreams Just quoting you till they get to the house and stuff...figured they could talk first <3

Jeremiah would definitely have words if he knew just what Zac was planning but thankfully he was unaware. Thankfully. This, on the other hand, was only mildly more disconcerting (because paintings of past selves always were, especially after meeting one.) The detective looked chagrined, at least, at the mention of the marriage. He thumbed the new wedding band on his finger, Algie's bloodstone ring on the other hand now. "Mm, spur of the moment since we weren't sure when we'd be back over there and for our parents." Also a couple of crazy friends but that was beside the point. "I am planning something here, you know, something that isn't just in front of an official." Jeremiah leaned in to nudge Zac lightly.

Zac leaned back, bumping his shoulder against Jer, a comfortable with each other in a sort of armless hug. “No pressure, it was just… I don’t know.” He shrugged staring into the nothing before rubbing at the back of his neck. “Do you feel, I don’t know, more grounded? I mean, since you went to England? I just feel like everything has gone topsy turvey, but this at least is a positive topsy.

Jeremiah leaned a little more, the top of his head tilting against Zac's before he straightened back up. Just another reassuring gesture. "It wasn't exactly planned and I would prefer to have something with you there." He meant it because Jeremiah did want a ceremony here with those few that were close. "A little bit, yes," his lips curved upward into a small smile, "because we needed the air." A hand was smoothed through his hair, then rubbing the back of his neck a moment (because obviously it was a gesture they both shared). "Coming back into the area was not something I enjoyed." Which probably sounded like he did not want to come back but it was rather- "The magic faded," he said a breath later, "while we were gone. It gradually disappeared until there was nothing." So Jeremiah had been without a chill, without the pain, for a few days and had come back to it.

Zac ducked his head, a smile on his face, pleased to hear that Jer would have liked him to be there in a round about way. “That would be cool.” He admitted. The fact that coming back was not enjoyable though, that earned a sharp and worried look, but the magic, well that seemed to help explain why. The icy ‘burn’. “Sorry.” He said, more out of sympathy than feelings of guilt or responsibility for that feeling. “If I can ever find something that will help, you know I’ll come right to you.” He swore. Maybe he could too… maybe. “But, maybe in the mean time we can learn a little more about that artist. I… I’m hoping for a self-portrait, but regardless I have a feeling that they um, that they will match someone who currently lives here in Ashdown. “

"I would not worry about it as much," Jeremiah replied. "Finding something. It's ..." He shook his head. "It's something I'm going to start working with instead of against besides," his lips twitched up into a small smile, "when I'm around Alg it's not really an issue. Something about his magic ... It's not a problem when I'm around him." Speaking of the portraits- "It'll be interesting to see what they have, if there are any familiar faces." A hand was raked through his hair. "Any information about the artist would be helpful as well. Ah," a brief pause, "now that I'm back I will actually be looking into the files at work. To see if there's anything there." About anyone really, not just himself, but for now the focus was on the visit. "He does know we are coming?"

“I emailed.” He nodded. “He said bring a friend, or a drink… and that both was fine so long as I shared.” He nodded and then hoisted the large thermos of tea. “… I mean, I think it’s enough to share right?” “… yo…you’ve met him right? I mean, I think you maybe have? I’m not nervous I swear.” “… I’m so, tired of feeling like I need to apologize all the time. I managed not to when I set this up, but… he recommended not dealing with Sunny, said he think’s she’s crazy for believing in magi. But, how could they not know about some magic if they are around her so often. Didn’t she like… never EAT?”

"I've only heard of him by reputation, never met him in person." Jeremiah looked amused at the thermos and inclined his head in a way to say it would be more than enough. "To be entirely honest, I have to frequently keep some of the more exuberant officers away from the Shore estate. They were harassing the interns and it almost turned into an incident." The detective shook his head in annoyance but let it go. The mentioning of Sunny, of her being crazy, of all of that ... "He is not the only one to advise against dealing with Sunny, though the first to say that she is ..." His fingers flicked to imply crazy. Jeremiah would not say that about her. "I am certain that she may not have eaten in the past but I believe she can now. "As it stands, he may just be trying to keep appearances that he knows nothing about what is going on by saying what he did. I doubt he's unaware."

“Why were they harassing the interns?” He crinkled his nose in confusion. “Or maybe I’m not allowed to ask that, sorry, if it’s an active case I mean!” He exhaled and crinkled his nose. “I still don’t know what to think of her. But… it’s just interesting that, I feel like she wants to be more human and maybe I’m wrong.” “Hey… we should, we should look into where the boat came from, the one that came to Ashdown and started that folk lore Indian princess thing. I mean, we’re kind of assuming that it’s all just here, that it started here but what if it like, migrated, maybe there is information in the world that we just haven’t searched for because we don’t know it exists and…I am so babbling.”

"It's not active anymore," he replied easily. "Remember the fliers? The ones that were all over town when we got back after being stuck? Apparently something got around that his interns were at fault and the department had to look into it." Jeremiah had spent a fair time trying to get them to stop because everything was based on rumors with no hard facts to back it up. There was, in this case, no reason to go after someone who had been a part of the community for so long - the Shore estate - with anything else than concrete proof of guilt. "Sunny wants to be born supposedly," his voice was quiet as he spoke, "and probably be human just like us, as you said." Though they were obviously losing bits of their humanity in all of this, as far as he was concerned. His mind flitted to Aleksy who was now- "Ah ... it's something to look into." That story always unnerved him because of the nightmares it had caused. For a moment the memory of Algie's body floating dead in bloody water flickered but he quickly shoved it away. "If you listen to what is said, then it's true. All the old stories are but I think ... I do know about it. Some of it, at least."

“Didn’t those fliers give people a creepy feeling?” Zac said after a moment, before adding. “And, didn’t taking them to Other Ashdown introduce you to um, mister creepy?” He looked anxious at the thought. If those fliers were connected to Sunny’s house, and specifically with the enigmatic Mr. Leroux, well that was a bit strange, eerie even. “… I really need to continue my interviews, I feel like the more I learn the more strange it becomes but, it almost starts feeling like I can see bits of the, the pattern. He shrugged and glanced up ahead towards their destination. “Well, maybe we’ll see bits when we see the paintings, I mean if we find more people we known in those paintings it would really be, well creepy and confirming, but we might also be able to learn the actions they took, we took before.” He shook his head. “Though I’m pretty sure we shouldn’t bring it up to Mister Leroux. And um, if his husband is there, don’t mention the voice.” azuredreams Want to arrive next post?

"Felt as if someone was touching your neck," Jeremiah responded immediately, "and yes, it did." It was, in fact, the first time that he had ever met the Burning Man. The being that made him think of his father so much that it was ridiculous. That was neither here nor there. He nodded in agreement about what they could find out about from the paintings. "Ah, yes. I'll be mindful." His eyes glinted. "Unlike my men, I actually possess tact." Honestly that was an issue with his officers (some of them) and he was forever working on it. They just got overeager and tried to hard. "After this, I'll make a point to go look into the old police records to see what can be found." His gaze flicked ahead as they were reaching their destination.

"I definitely don't doubt you lack tact!" He assured. "If anything that's probably me. I mean I ...brought up the voice thing and I shouldn't have I guess, I just... I mean I'm so sure they have to know about, you know." He shrugged. "But Maybe they just don't want to talk about it for one reason or another. I don't know. It's ...interesting." He took a breath and let it out. "Alright... let's...hope for the best." He reached up and knocked on the door. shibrogane sorry! I mixed up threads!

There was a delay, as always, before Renard opened the door. "Mr. Bantock," he said. "Detective Lieutenant. Here to see the paintings, I assume." Without waiting for an answer, he shut the door behind them and led them past the velvet rope on the main stair. The space upstairs was a neatly-kept hallway, an antique clock set against the wall on a fine table and a chinoiserie vase in the nook behind the stair rail. There was no time to look into the other rooms; Renard led them directly to the storage space above the kitchen, where a roomful of canvases and several strongboxes full of sketchbooks lingered. Renard stopped by the table in the center of the room, put one hand on a box of rubber gloves. "You will not touch anything without gloves on your hands," he said, flatly. "You will consume any liquids you have outside of this room. And you will not take photographs. Are there any questions."

A much better greeting than he expected. Jeremiah inclined his head in greeting and a short nod. This was, after all, Zac's show and he was along for the ride. When they reached the room and the rules were laid out, he looked to his son to see if he had any questions. He, himself, did not. Nor had he brought anything with him (as Zac had covered them both). "None from me," he finally said. Though he was going to get two pairs of gloves out. One for himself and one for Zac once Renard removed his hand from the box. His eyes cast about the room, as if looking to see if there was something about the paintings that he would be able to tell. If magic were involved.
