■ BLUNT Ruth has always been incredibly blunt; she's not one to try to spare anyone's feelings, be they friend or foe. She sees no point in softening a message to try to make someone feel better, and won't hesitate to call anyone out for anything she disagrees with. While her lack of tact can at times be endearing, it doesn't always work in her favor, especially when it's a sensitive subject.
■ SARCASTIC Ruth is constantly sarcastic; it's been a defense mechanism for her for her as long as she can remember. She's very intelligent, but she's never been one to just calmly disagree with someone else; mocking them, especially when they won't admit that they're in the wrong, is something she's very fond of.
■ CYNICAL Ruth's experiences have taught her that cynicism is her best bet to avoid being let down by the people around her. She generally expects the worst of people to begin with, and leaves it up to them to prove her wrong over time. She'd rather not be disappointed by them later on, as optimism has never gotten her very far.
■ DEFENSIVE Ruth's a very defensive person by nature. Being a squib is a largely magical family in wizarding society has only made that aspect of her personality more prominent. CHILDHOOD Ruthven MacEacharin was born and bred in the Stirling Scotland area, the seventh child of nine siblings in an old Scottish pureblood wizarding family. With three older brothers and three older sisters, as well as two younger sister that followed after her, 'overwhelming', was probably the best way to describe Ruth's early childhood. Her parents, while loving and good people, were frequently away on archaeological expeditions, generally alongside unsuspecting muggles, and it was not hard for Ruth, who had always been a very sensitive child, to feel completely alone, even while surrounded by older and younger siblings. The discovery that she was a squib only made things worst, as did the fact that her parents's sudden death via plane crash coincided with this. Not only would she have to watch each of her older siblings attend Hogwarts, she would never truly fit into the world she had been by all rights born into. Eventually it was realized that her younger sister Suzanne was a squib as well, but the younger girl coped far more easily with that knowledge, and Ruth didn't find a like-minded companion in someone five years her junior. The family was headed by her eldest brother Duncan after her parents died, but he was nine years older and Ruth could never come to see him as a guardian.

SCHOOL YEARS Her adolescence passed slowly and unpleasantly; all of her siblings save Suzanne attended Hogwarts, while she and her sister attended the local public schools. Ruth spent the majority of her time either online or playing various sports; just thinking about magic made her skin crawl. She distanced herself even further from her siblings and tried to live as much like a muggle as possible, rejecting the magical world completely, as she felt it had similarly rejected her.

POST GRADUATION After graduating from secondary school Ruth simply applied to attend the nearest university. Part of her wanted to get away from home more than anything; the other part of her was afraid to leave everything she had ever known, as much as it had hurt her. She lived at home while attending uni, although she did spend as much time out as possible, jumping into the study, party, study, party cycle and making some like-minded friends. Although Ruth did quite well in her studies she struggled to find work post-graduation, and when she heard about an opening at a shop in Hogsmeade, it seemed like a cruel joke. Her, a squib, working at a greengrocer's in the village right beside Hogwarts. But the job required no magic at all, the pay was generous, and, as much as she was slow to admit it, she warmed to the shop owner, an American transplant named Kenneth, as well as his younger brother, Elliott, and her coworker at the time, Sophie. Her rigid dislike for magical society in general began to soften; by her mid twenties she started to frequent places she had before avoided like the plague due to their association with magic. Ruth fell into a new group of friends, consisting of wizards, witches, squibs, and muggles alike, and found herself better for it. Through this expanded social circle she became particularly close with Dee, a muggle woman aware of the magical world, and eventually entered into a relationship (although it may have started off as experimentation) with her and a wizard quidditch player, Riley Catlin. When Dee became pregnant, the three agreed to raise the child together.
