Pierrette sat in front of her computer, face in her hands as she reread the e-mail again.
Her parents and family were still safe. They were alive, at least - and Pierrette rubbed her face making a soft worried noise.
Stay in America. Get a green card. Be safe.
Pierrette had planned to get her card, but it was sinking in she couldn't - shouldn't go home. Her family was afraid and for good reason - but still....
Still....
Pierrette read the e-mail again slowly, making a soft sound of concern as she touched her monitor silently, and looked to a digital photo frame by it. Her family; parents, siblings, all in the photo....
Would she see them again? Between the War she was hiding from and the events overseas she began to fear she was losing her family to.
She sank in her seat, and shut her eyes, when another e-mail popped on screen. A sulk became a blink and she opened a second e-msil from her family.
Silver eyes went over the words, each letter and syllable once, twice, thrice, mouth dropping open slightly in awe.
"Jeanette? Here?" Pierrette finally murmured to herself, and turned. Could she care for her youngest sister here?.... Well, likely, if she picked up a part time job. College was well and good but she needed work to support a sister - to get a bigger place than a studio apartment. There was need for good worj too - and if she didn't get money together, she needed to take on full time work. Regardless... She really did need a green card now. She had so much to do - and the first step was applying.
Pierrette rose, moving about to collect papers and documents as she could, moving to her computer at times to fill in information. While before she had a VISA and was starting, she was now pressing harder, smiling and frowning.
Her emotions were mixed. She worried, for her family, both close and extended. She worried about the trip, their safety, the recent events - but also she worried for herself. Could she protect Jeanne? Get her into a good school? For a moment, Pierrette hesitated, freezing.
Barren Pines had been a poor school - understatement to be sure, but still poor. The war was unchecked, civilians hurt often, and briefly the girl considered suggesting elsewhere.
But then she calmed. She wanted to see her sister again. To help her dress dolls, to take her shopping - to enjoy extended quality time with her. Pierrette finally decided to smile, and sighed, moving to go over papers again. Did she want to continue school? Yes. Continue living in America? Yes.
So work was the choice. The only one, anyhow.
Pierrette breathed, and began to pull up Craig's list, making a list of businesses to try; places hiring, and noted to go to stores for applications live.
Choice made, Pierrette loaded a new Word document, and began to write. It wouldn't be a perfect resume, but it would suffice to find work.
